Good to see Vicenzo Natali directing an episode.

Isn't directing TV episodes actually how he funds some of his more esoteric indie projects?

Re: The Strain (S2E12) -- "Fallen Light" -- 9/27/15

Last night's was more of a strategic episode - I guess after a full month of rock n roll we had to have it get toned down a bit. Looks like Quinlan may not be a good guy after all. I really liked the way they shot his lair/office. It was massive and I couldn't tell if it was a set or an optical - they showed it twice.

Next week is the season finale!!!!!! Place your bids!!!!!

He's bankrolling Setrakian millions for an artifact that threatens the existence of his bosses (and probably himself). Doesn't seem unreasonable to kill Setrakian if he screws them over.

Of course, if Palmer loses I'm sure the Master will be a good sport about it

Just what one is looking for in a apocalyptic show about vampires - a bidding war for a book.

Maybe we'll get a special opening credits montage that's all anime'd out as the two parties look into a computer and start outbidding one another for said book...

I have no idea how they plan to have this very special book auction go down without looking ridiculous. On one side you have an aging Nazi hunter doing the bidding of ancient vampires. On the other side you have a scheming billionaire...doing the bidding of a different vampire. I am sure everyone will play nice and have tea after the bidding process is done.

The bidding and all that is in the books. I'd say the tension should be equal to that of the scene in Casino Royale with Bond and Le Chifre at the poker table minus the narration of Giancarlo Giannini.

I hear they are doing a last minute re-shoot for the finale; here is the TV Guide blurb: the Occido Lumen accidentally ends up on half.com; hijinks ensue. Dutch has a change of her change of heart and then renegs that change.

I've got to say, this show may be starting to out-Walking Dead The Walking Dead. In spite of all its flaws, I really enjoyed the first season. This season feels as if it is squandering every opportunity it has though. I am just not feeling it this time around. They are giving us really cool characters (Quinlan, Angel) and then ... not doing shit with them! Meanwhile, our heroes have become insanely ridiculous.

The scenarios Eph is winding up in are almost comical. First he is in a single-episode remake of Throw Momma From the Train, then he gets involved in some sexy-dangerous contract law. Oh, did we mention he is sniper assassin, too?

Setrakian has hunted superpowered worm-tongued vampires for decades, yet gets KO'ed by a bookworm whose biggest superpower is getting his mom to make him a TV dinner.

Fet ... they've even managed to make Fet boring!

Are there still some other characters? Oh yeah, there is going-on-a-date-any-way-but-Dutch ... Meh.

I think season two has mostly streamlined the unnecessary arcs and characters, making it a better show. I am praying they get to dump the kid with his grandparents.

Quinland wants to kill the Master. It is literally what he has been spending his whole life trying to do. If a man in his 90s is collateral damage, I think he'd consider that an acceptable loss. He may be half vampire, but he probably has his share of blood on his hands. It's not like he some wandering avenger bent on protecting the human race, what he's doing is simple revenge. I get the sense that he's an independent, only siding with the Ancients right now because he needs their resources.

I'm with Abob, I think they have done just the opposite. Quinlan is the probably the coolest character on the show and has gotten almost zero screen time. Instead we've spent tons of time on the relationship soap opera with Dutch, her girlfriend and Fet. Grampa wrestler and his spunky street wise sidekick. And the deputy mayor or whatever she is, whos whole saga is sleep inducing. They are giving the most banal characters/story lines the bulk of the screen time.

Re: The Strain (S2E12) -- "Fallen Light" -- 9/27/15

Season 2 has been utter garbage. Between bad story-telling, useless flashbacks, laughable situations and responses, etc. I don't think there has really been anything that has happened so far that would actually affect anyone if they just skipped this season. It seems to be extremely padded out filler material to make this show last for 5 seasons. They're going to run it into the ground and it'll end up canceled instead though if they keep this up. :/

I've just about lost interest in this and the hope that it'll redeem itself is very unlikely now.

Actually it's based on a multiple book series, so it's possible the books drag out too.

Except there is only 3 books, which in regards to the typically handled fashion would account for 3 seasons; thus it's rightly so to assume that two of the seasons will be mostly tv-original fluff to fill in the gap and season 2 has mostly been that.

And additional comics, right?

I thought the comics were adaptations of the novels?

The first season followed book 1 pretty closely. I'm currently reading the second book and there are very few intersections with Season 2 and those aren't very close. Vampire-mom Kelly making a move for Zach and the blind kids are about it, and those go down very differently. In the book, the children were all blinded by staring at the eclipse.

Where I am at currently in book 2 ("The Fall") ...

Spoiler:
is a Setrakian flashback where he spends 3 days torturing a Nazi/strigoi, chops off its limbs, seals it in a lead lined coffin, and dumps it in the middle of the ocean to spend eternity cut off from the hive. Pretty badass. Angel was just introduced and I'm pretty sure the Guptas are dead before we ever get to meet them.

Re: The Strain (S2E12) -- "Fallen Light" -- 9/27/15

To echo other people's sentiment that his season is just stretching out stuff for no reason.

I loved the books and this show is veering so far away from them! The whole making two seasons out of book 2 and 3 each is the biggest mistake they made. It stretches things out too much and instead we get pointless new characters and pointless new subplots that are really boring to watch.

So I know it might be too early to tell right now but I guess we won’t be getting these book plot points? Books spoilers :

Spoiler:
Since Eph killed his old boss then that means the whole ‘prison camp’ scenario is totally scrapped? I read the books years ago so don’t remember every single detail but I remember this part of the story to be pretty important. And with Barnes being obsessed with Nora who he’s keeping locked up

With Eph’s virus thing does that mean that the whole nuclear option is also scrapped? I think from a budget standpoint I didn’t really make that much sense to go exactly like the books and blow up half of new York, but still…

And with Eph trying to get Zack to his grandparents does that mean that the whole Master kidnapping Zack part is scrapped? Like I said I know It’s early and he could still get kidnapped but maybe that’s a little too much for TV? A kid being used like that..

prison camp stuff was already shown in the first season?
There could be another flashback, though.

a bit of a boring episode i guess setting up for the finale

overall i've enjoyed this second season

the book stuff is stupid though

If the Master knows the street gang has the book, he would just go kill them all and get it !

That was my thought too. The preview makes it look like
Spoiler:
that whoever wins the book is going to still have to fight their way out. So if the trailer isn't misleading us the auction is meaningless anyway and it's all coming down to a big brawl.
