By splitting the final 13 episodes into two seasons, they'll be able to sell those seasons separately and probably for the same price each that all of the previous seasons have sold for.

I think I recall Weiss and Benioff saying that logistically it's possible to produce more than 10 episodes per season. But, they told HBO they were against it because they thought it would hurt the show creatively.

Yeah you're right. I mis-remembered the information:
http://www.ign.com/articles/2011/07/...to-10-episodes
The execs said, "If we could do 12 episodes, we would," but that the creators of the show couldn't "physically make more than 10" given the show's scope, size and cost without either having there be more than a year-long delay between seasons or the quality being diluted. Game of Thrones was renewed while Season 1 was airing, long after it had wrapped production. It will be interesting to see if Season 3 (and beyond) get earlier renewals, giving the team more time to work – and perhaps allow for longer seasons.

Well, I didn't wait, but good to know my source was correct.

I'm watching The Door from this season. Aidan Gillen who plays Baelish really is so good. So manipulative. Great character.
