Yeah I thought the same thing too but also just figured it was a way to explain what a root kit was to the vast majority of viewers who didn't know. A bit transparent but whatever.Originally Posted by chowderhead

There are many incompetent managers with technical staff that know more than the boss. It was a refreshingly honest take on a character that is one of the show's leads. That was actually one of the better things I liked about this pilot.Originally Posted by chowderhead

This wasn't really on my list of stuff to watch this summer. Plus, Christian Slater's track record for shows is you know poor.
But, I recorded and watched this today. Wow, I was pleasantly surprised. Very well done. And it did feel like a 70 minute movie. Great work by the director.
Lots of computer techno babble, but I liked how it was shot and I liked the lead Rami Malek at how socially awkward he was. Loved the opening when he was interrogating that Indian guy. I remember Malek from the 8th season of 24. He played a young terrorist, who's mother was played by Mare Winningham.
Looks like Christian Slater has more of a supporting role in this show and I think that works perfectly. Didn't realize that Kaitlin Doubleday from Empire had a younger sister. I see some of the resemblance now that I think about it.
The only weird part was when Elliot's boss just randomly blurted out to him in a conversation that he was gay. That felt out of place. I would have been fine not knowing the character's sexuality.
The ending was great at how Elliot blackmailed the guy who was cheating on his wife.

I liked the first episode--I'm interested to see how they play things out.
Hopefully this won't be one of those series with a story that could be told really well in 6 episodes, but they try to streeeeetch it out indefinitely.

I think it may end up that way. I have watched the show a few times and can see how they could be setting that up. I guess I don't have to much of a problem with it if they execute it properly.Originally Posted by chowderhead

I usually avoid USA shows like the plague. They haven't put out a show worth watching since Duckman. But the pilot for this was excellent. Only negative was Christian Slater.Originally Posted by flashburn
I was really not expecting to like this, since I've disliked every USA show, but wow, I thought this was awesome. Complete change of pace for USA.

I think my favorite line was him explaining that the voice over explanations are to an imaginary person. And how well aware he is of his mental illnesses.

everything about this was simply quality. and i did think it would work better without Slater, but i do like him in general and wasn't that distracting. but Malek is just phenomenal and transfixing...

He's very memorable in HBO's the Pacific. And you're right, he's different enough that he just has a quality that seems different.Originally Posted by Jadzia
I had never seen the lead actor in anything before but I found him very interesting. He alternated between creepy and handsome at any given point during the episode. His character reminded me of Wes Bentley's in American Beauty.

Can't wait, haven't been this excited for a new show in a long time. Rewatched the pilot and it was just as good as the first time.

Oh that guy is dead or is he?
Oh that dog like pooping and peeing on the bed or does he?
Oh men in black are following him or are they?
That rapper is no rapper or is he?

Yeah, it looks like a lot of this is in Elliot's head, though I'd be happy if that's not how it plays out.

I'm really liking this show so far. Hope the quality keeps up.

Love it. The beginning of the 2nd episode reminded me of French new wave cinema.

Curious who will do the rest of the directing now that Oplev (pilot) and Esmail (he's the series creator, and dir of ep 2) have done an episode each. Was hoping they'd do it True Detective style with either of them taking on full reins. Esmail's debut flick wasn't a great movie but it was visually interesting.

Everything about this show is sort of understated and subtle. And then you have Christian Slater. Who's playing his character like a Batman villain.

Slater is not real. That much I know. What gets you thinking is how much of this is real and what is not.
Not only does this guy have OCD, social anxiety along with who knows what, but I sense some psychosis as well. I really like the show so far but hope this doesn't end like we see a lot of shows end in that 'it was purgatory'. I hope the series finale doesn't just flash to him sitting at his desk thinking about pulling this all off.

Slater sticks out like a sore thumb on this show. I get that he's supposed to be the Tyler Durden character but Slater is playing it like he plays every role.Originally Posted by Thrush
