Re: Royal Pains -- Season Finale -- "Wonderland" -- 8/27/09

I wouldn't even bother with this show but the last couple of weeks the only other shows I watch are Psych and Leverage. It isn't really bad, just very pedestrian.

Also, I hope in season two they learn to have just one ending for an episode. It seems like every episode they have a scene/shot that looks like an ending, fades to black and then fades into another ending scene and sometimes they even tack on a third one.

I was quite underwhelmed by this season finale. I figured that the lady was drugging her sister from square one, albeit I thought that she was doing it maliciously. I also called the father angle early on as well.

Exactly. I won't be back for season 2.

I find these characters to be so bland and boring.
USA, characters *would be* welcome.

It is pretty pedestrian, but it was solid enough I'll be back for season 2 to see if they can develop this stuff sufficiently.

My problem is, I was enjoying it more and more until the finale. Also, when the marathon ran yesterday, I found myself not wanting to re-watch a single episode. At the end they said new episodes are coming next summer- is the hiatus really going to be that long?

Yes, it's going to be a summer show like Burn Notice. Now that season 2 got 16 episodes, I fully anticipate USA doing a split season like Burn Notice and air 9-10 episodes in the summer and the rest in the winter.

Yeah, the first season was very paint-by-numbers, but I enjoyed it enough that I suspect I'll keep watching. Incidentally, I have two casting suggestions for Hank & Evan's dad: Judd Hirsch or Brent Spiner. I think either has the sufficient age, comedic chops and the requisite big nose to be convincing.

Brent Spiner would be a good choice, and would be one with a bit of history in relation to Paulo Costanzo. Spiner guest starred on an episode of Joey as himself, and shared his scenes with Costanzo's character, something-Tribbiani.

I'm not sure, but I think you lose a point for knowing that.

They've mentioned the father enough from time to time, that you knew he was going to show up eventually. I've enjoyed the first season okay. It's not on the level of Psych or the early Monk, but it's been interesting. I thought there would be more, I don't know, intrigue in the show than just the weekly diagnoses.

Royal Pains is certainly a "style over substance" series, but at least they made that clear from the beginning so I don't feel misled. I do hope that the plotting evolves for the second season, so that there's more to keep me watching than just being on after Burn Notice and having a likable cast.

Didn't like the finale at all. The only part I enjoyed was the daydream sequence at the wedding, of what she really wanted to say but didn't. Other than that, flat, not that interesting, and certainly nothing so compelling as to make me care that it's not coming back for a year.

You are correct. At LEAST two endings. They usually tie up the medical story of the week go to commercial then have a scene where the main characters stories proceed (e.g. Hank and Jill sharing a meal, having sex, etc.). In this episode they had both those endings PLUS the Daddy Lawson cliffhanger scene. It isn't the best technique in terms of storytelling and all those commercial breaks in the last 15 minutes gets annoying.

I'll be back next season if only because nothing else new is on.

Royal Pains worth watching?

I dvrd the season without watching an episode and nee dto clear some space for the upcoming fall season. Basically is this show worth watching?

I've heard some really mixed opinions on it, from its fun and entertaining to it has its moments but is pretty terrible overall. I just need to finish something once I start it and don't want to add another bad show to the que, so would you guys pass on it or recommend it?

Thanks

I gave up after about 5 episodes. I'd say skip it.

Re: Royal Pains worth watching?

I dumped my saved episodes without watching. The ratings suggest it is near-certain to get a DVD release timed to hype up season 2. I'm about to have plenty to do thanks to the start of the TV season and a move, so I'll evaluate at the time of that DVD release whether or not I want to catch up on the show.

Re: Royal Pains worth watching?

I personally like the show. Visually it's great and the lead characters have grown on me. You are going to get some really mixed opinions about it though. But, since the new Fall TV season is starting very soon, I would probably clear out the space and wait for the DVD release.

I thought it was a fun summer show. I agree that you're probably good waiting for the dvds. The plot isn't so critical that you'd have a big spoiler dropped on you where you feel too cheated.

Nothing special. Don't go out of your way (certainly don't buy the DVDs) to watch it.

Royal Pains Season 2 Returns

One of my favorite shows from last summer is starting back up again soon. Royal Pains returns to USA on June 3rd @ 10pm. Anyone else excited for the return of new episodes of this series?

I liked it, but it's still 1 1/2 months away. It's a little early to get giddy over summer shows. Let's make it through the season finales of the current season 1st.

Re: Royal Pains Season 2 Returns

Well I had been seeing this 30 second promo for it on USA recently, so I figured why not go ahead and create at thread for it. Has anyone else seen the spot? Also, I'm pretty excited that Henry Winkler will be playing the boy's Father. I think he's going to fit in great with the cast.

Let me know when they get rid of the annoying brother and maybe I'll give it another chance.

Who? Paulo Costanzo? I've actually been a fan of his for a while. I really thought he was funny in Road Trip, and the show Joey for a while. I was glad to see him on TV again.
