Here's a quick Q&A article with Matt--mostly about his background but he also addresses his "what's" style of answering.

Richards was named the permanent new host. So he just hires himself since he’s the EP as well.

He was good but that’s kinda lame to go through all that and just hire yourself.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Eh, it probably gave the show some good ratings, and it also shows that he is very qualified for the job compared to the others that have hosted.

I thought Mike, bow-tie guy, and possibly Mayim were the best up until this week, but Joe Buck (surprisingly to me) has really been good right from his start. But then again, with his other career, he would likely not be an option.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

See, I never saw all the guest hosts as being serious "tryouts". I mean, Aaron Rodgers isn't quitting football (not yet, at least) after an MVP season to host Jeopardy, Anderson Cooper is not leaving CNN.

Spoiler:
Internal message SPT:
"As I am sure you have noticed, our host selection process has received tremendous public attention and scrutiny recently, particularly about Mike’s role in the decision-making. When we began our search, Mike, as EP of Jeopardy!, was involved in those early conversations. But when we began to consider him as a potential host, he was not part of that process."

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Okay, so he didn't actually "hire himself" but the studio and his bosses were the ones who made the decision.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I like Mike and it was Sony's decision to hire him. He's 46 so if the ratings are good he can host for a very long time. I think it was important to find someone that can host for the next 15-20 years.

The executives in charge of making the final hosting decision:

I didn't see them all as auditions either, but this hiring just feels really off to me. Happy to see Bialik will stay a part of things. I still think she was the best of the guest hosts. There's something about Richards that feels too much like a game show host to me.

But...it's a game show. Isn't it?

Maybe not flashy and gimmicky as something like The Price is Right, but it's still contestants trying to win money. If the series of guest hosts WAS a series of auditions though, I'm wondering if Matt's run has kinda hamstrung some of the last few hosts. They've had to keep a boring one-person streak interesting.

Wait. Are you serious? This is a job for a game show host? Well, that changes everything!

I'd very closely equate a game show host and a used car salesman. It's that same shit eating grin, that persistent fakeness and insincerity. Trebek didn't feel like a game show host to me. Richards does.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

It does feel kind of lame that the show did all those guest hosts only to end up hiring the executive producer. I guess it’s whatever as I’m not a frequent viewer, but seems kind of gimmicky in my opinion. I realize he didn’t hire himself, but I’m sure he had a fairly big advantage.

It seems gimmicky because it was a gimmick.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Richards was one of the better guest hosts.

He, Bialik, and Buzzy were my top three.

And Joe Buck is doing pretty good, too.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I missed Monday's ep, but just watched the Tuesday episode.

Buck was very good.

Outside of his ridiculous reaction to the Randy Moss fake-mooning, I've always liked Buck on football (better than his partner ). He's very good on baseball.

The Champ is rolling. Gotta keep recording these.

So, does anyone know why people are so butt-hurt over LeVar Burton not getting the gig? I mean, he wasn't bad, but nothing about his stint had me saying "Yes! That's the guy!"

I think a lot of people (myself included) like him and were hoping he would have been better. Unfortunately I think he missed the mark during his time hosting. He seemed like he would have been a good fit, but I guess not.
