Krypton - (SyFy)

http://cdn1-www.comingsoon.net/asset...on-bar-640.jpg

DC Comics’ hold on television properties continues to expand today with the announcement that Syfy is moving forward with “Krypton,” a new television series that will explore the history of Superman’s ill-fated birth planet.

Hailing from DC Comics and Warner Horizon Television, “Krypton” will follow Kal-El’s grandfather with the following official description:

Years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This series follows The Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.

The idea for “Krypton” originated with The Dark Knight scribe David S. Goyer and Ian Goldberg (“Once Upon a Time”). Goldberg is set to draft the pilot with Goyer attached to executive produce.

In the late 1980′s, John Byrne scripted a comic book miniseries called “The World of Krypton”. It introduced a version of Kal-El’s paternal grandfather named Seyg-El (named for Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel). There’s no word yet on whether or not the new series will keep that name, however.

“Krypton” joins a rapidly expanding slate of DC Comics properties which already includes The CW’s “Arrow” and “The Flash,” FOX’s “Gotham” and NBC’s “Constantine”. En route to CBS is “Supergirl” with TNT developing the “Teen Titans” inspired “Titans”.

Hopefully it turns out as good as Gotham.

They begged Russell Crowe to reprise Jor El for this series and put it on CBS. It was going on a main broadcast network if he had agreed to be its star.

This show won't have the same challenges faced by many other comic book properties. While the planet Krypton is well known by almost everyone, there have been so many competing versions of it in the comics over the decades, fans can't really point to a definitive take. What it will lack are superheroes, which is probably why SyFy thought they could handle its budget.

You know who I've always wondered about? Not Superman's grandpa.

I love comic movies and shows and I'm not too sure about this. They could make it great.

I would have loved the CW version.

I'm a huge comic book fan, but I never even knew Kal-El's grandfather even existed in the comics. I looked it up on the DC Wiki, and apparently his name is Seyg-El. He only ever appeared in one comic miniseries.

I found the Krypton stuff to be the most fascinating part of Man of Steel, so I'm down for at least a couple of episodes.

So basically it takes place on a planet where no one has super powers? But they named it Krypton to tie it into something it can never reference?

Let's face it, had this been a show identical in all concepts except that it's not named Krypton or about a planet named Krypton, it wouldn't even be greenlit in the first place.

Re: Krypton - (SyFy)

so, nobody will have super powers in this then... basically could be any sort of drama show with a little sci-fi thrown in.

In Man of Steel they fucking rode dragons and have advanced technology. Just because there's no "super powers" doesn't mean it's going to be Downton Abbey.

On Krypton, I imagine his character will be closely modeled after Kal El. I firmly expect the grandfather in a scenario as a heroic young man that cares for the weak in his society. He'll be Kal El without the superpowers.

Maybe Superman can go back in time and visit Krypton. He did it more than once in the comics but I know they never will in this series.

Why is Krypton green in that pic? Lame.

Re: Krypton - (SyFy)

I've never been a fan of almost every incarnation of Krypton storytelling. Haven't liked anything in the comics, HATED the stuff in Man of Steel, and was only moderately interested in the Brando stuff from the Richard Donner movies.

The problem with a prequel like this is it's hard to get past the "you're all going to die anyway" mentality.

Then again, I thought GOTHAM would be a bust, and it's my favorite new show on the networks this year.

Isn't Kryptonite (which is usually green) chunks of the planet Krypton (which is exploding in the pic in question)?

Kryponite came in many different colors and it affected Superman in different ways. Why show it exploding when the stories in this series have nothing to do with that. Besides, it was Jor-el and not his father that predicted the catastrophe and obviously from the despcription it's not about Jor-el at all.

Depends on the continuity. Post-COIE, kryptonite was very rare and only green existed in the period of comics from 1986 to early 2000s. There was red krytponite in one early 90s story, but it was ultimately revealed as fake conjured by Mxyzptlk's magic. All the color kryptonite didn't start coming back until the early 2000s.

Yeah I know....to me most post Crisis changes are all BS. Don`t get me talking about the new 52. Thats even worse.

I guess it's got all of us talking about a series on SyFy, so it has that going for it, I guess. But I don't see how they're going to save budget by not having superheroes, if this is based on the Krypton shown in MoS.

What next, Atlantis? Paradise Island? Actually, I bet they get some viewers for that last one.

PhantomStranger 12-09-14 09:18 PM

Re: Krypton - (SyFy)

You can bet on a Paradise Island show if the Wonder Woman movie does anything. You could build it around Wonder Girl and play into the increasingly prevalent theme of female action leads.

 love it.

I think the Arrow show kind of stole the "beginning intro" format from Revenge, but the CW has now done it at least two more times, The Tomorrow People and now the Flash.

The Vampire Diaries did it before all of those shows.

Yes and no, being that show just sets up the premise, where in these newer shows have one distinct "hero" to root for. And they all start out (can't remember if Revenge did exactly, but Arrow, The Tomorrow People, and The Flash) with "my name is..." It is starting to become somewhat silly.

I had to dig this up, but here is Stefan's narration from the pilot episode of The Vampire Diaries:

"For over a century, I've lived in secret. Hiding in the shadows, alone in the world. Until now. Im a vampire and this is my story. "

Re: Krypton - (SyFy)

David S. Goyer’s long-gestating Superman prequel Krypton is a go at Syfy. The cable network, which has been developing the project for more than a year-and-a-half, is finalizing a deal for a pilot order. Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) has come on board as executive producer/showrunner, while Peaky Blinders helmer Colm McCarthy has been set to direct the pilot for Warner Horizon TV.

Goyer and Kindler are doing rewrites on the original pilot teleplay by Goyer & Ian Goldberg which was based on a story Goyer and Goldberg had penned together.

Plus, whatever sector of space Krypton is in would have it's own Green Lantern, wouldn't it?

I'm guessing we'll see a lot of the interstellar DC races show up on Krypton. That is probably where I would go with it.

Expect a lot, and I mean a lot, of references to Rao.

So this will be part of the DC Movie Universe canon but won't be related to the Supergirl canon?
