Krypton - (SyFy)

DC Comics’ hold on television properties continues to expand today with the announcement that Syfy is moving forward with “Krypton,” a new television series that will explore the history of Superman’s ill-fated birth planet.
Hailing from DC Comics and Warner Horizon Television, “Krypton” will follow Kal-El’s grandfather with the following official description:
Years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This series follows The Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.
The idea for “Krypton” originated with The Dark Knight scribe David S. Goyer and Ian Goldberg (“Once Upon a Time”). Goldberg is set to draft the pilot with Goyer attached to executive produce.
In the late 1980′s, John Byrne scripted a comic book miniseries called “The World of Krypton”. It introduced a version of Kal-El’s paternal grandfather named Seyg-El (named for Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel). There’s no word yet on whether or not the new series will keep that name, however.
“Krypton” joins a rapidly expanding slate of DC Comics properties which already includes The CW’s “Arrow” and “The Flash,” FOX’s “Gotham” and NBC’s “Constantine”. En route to CBS is “Supergirl” with TNT developing the “Teen Titans” inspired “Titans”.

Hopefully it turns out as good as Gotham.

They begged Russell Crowe to reprise Jor El for this series and put it on CBS. It was going on a main broadcast network if he had agreed to be its star.
This show won't have the same challenges faced by many other comic book properties. While the planet Krypton is well known by almost everyone, there have been so many competing versions of it in the comics over the decades, fans can't really point to a definitive take. What it will lack are superheroes, which is probably why SyFy thought they could handle its budget.

You know who I've always wondered about? Not Superman's grandpa.

"My name is Jor-El. For years Ii've been telling all that would listen that Krypton's time is at an end. Only one man is willing to help me, Zod, a commander in Krypton's military arm. Together we will find a way to find a new hope for Krypton."

I'm a huge comic book fan, but I never even knew Kal-El's grandfather even existed in the comics. I looked it up on the DC Wiki, and apparently his name is Seyg-El. He only ever appeared in one comic miniseries.

I found the Krypton stuff to be the most fascinating part of Man of Steel, so I'm down for at least a couple of episodes.

Let's face it, had this been a show identical in all concepts except that it's not named Krypton or about a planet named Krypton, it wouldn't even be greenlit in the first place.

so, nobody will have super powers in this then... basically could be any sort of drama show with a little sci-fi thrown in.

In Man of Steel they fucking rode dragons and have advanced technology. Just because there's no "super powers" doesn't mean it's going to be Downton Abbey.

Maybe Superman can go back in time and visit Krypton. He did it more than once in the comics but I know they never will in this series.
Why is Krypton green in that pic? Lame.

Re: Krypton - (SyFy)
I've never been a fan of almost every incarnation of Krypton storytelling. Haven't liked anything in the comics, HATED the stuff in Man of Steel, and was only moderately interested in the Brando stuff from the Richard Donner movies.
The problem with a prequel like this is it's hard to get past the "you're all going to die anyway" mentality.
Then again, I thought GOTHAM would be a bust, and it's my favorite new show on the networks this year.
