Not sure I'm liking this version of Alfred.

Dollmaker was also in an episode of Arrow, so this isn't the first time he has been used outside the comics.

When Bruce was listening to the hardcore music on his headphones, did anyone else think about Batman's song in The Lego Movie?

I'm enjoying GOTHAM a lot...I think it's really entertaining. I'm not as steeped in comic book lore as many of you are when it comes to Batman, so I'm probably more open to different interpretations of characters than some others here are.

So far, this is the best new show of the fall.

FOX

· GOTHAM: 2.8/8, retaining 87% of last week’s debut rating in Adults 18-49
o In Total Viewers, week 2 of GOTHAM held on to 89% of its premiere audience
o GOTHAM tied with Blacklist last night in Adults 18-49 — despite having no lead-in
o GOTHAM was the highest-rated drama of the night in Adults 18-34 (2.3/8).
o GOTHAM held steady over the course of its hour in Adults 18-49 (2.8>2.7), kept 100% of its Men 18-49 (3.0 > 3.0) and grew in its second half hour by +5% among Adults 18-34 (2.2>2.3)
o Overall, GOTHAM was the second-highest rated entertainment program of the night in Men 18-49 (behind Big Bang Theory) and the #1 drama of the night in Men 18-49.
looks like still solid ratings

Given Carol Kane's appearance in this episode, I'm working on a fan theory that the Penguin is the illegitimate love child of Simka Gravas and Louie DePalma.

Man, that opening with Penguin was brutal.

Thought the same in the premier. I think it's her cheekbones.

I love the new interpretation of Alfred. His job was a butler, not a parent, so it will be an interesting dynamic to see him struggle in that role. I also think every actor is just nailing their roles.

The sub-plot with Whaley wasn't the strongest but, Blacklist aside, I've never been too impressed with his stuff. I also didn't like Carol Kane as Ms. Cobblepot. I kept waiting for a "Have fun storming the castle!" line.

Also two mild annoyances... one, Donal Logue's empty coffee cup in the beginning. Can the prop department not fill it with something to make it look realistic? Put some water in there or something. Two, the '9 miles to Gotham' sign was on the wrong side of the road. Sure the shot looked cinematic, but it was still out of place.

I'm just not digging this. I think I'm out. Maybe I'll revisit it if I hear about it getting awesome later.

Re: Gotham (S1E2) - "Selina Kyle" - 9/29/2014

Through 2 episodes, I will say that I like it, but I don't love it. I know it's pretty much apples and oranges comparing the 2, but I think Arrow on The CW made much more of an immediate impact on me. I loved that show from the Pilot episode.

I do like that Gotham is taking a little bit more of a slow burn Film Noirish crime thriller approach to the Gotham storyline as opposed to being a straight forward comic TV show.

I enjoyed Penguin's antics in this one. Agree with a few earlier comments that the young actress playing Selina is very reminiscent of a young Michelle Pfeiffer.

Re: Gotham (S1E2) - "Selina Kyle" - 9/29/2014

Did the cops ever find the kids that were being shipped off to Dollmaker? It seemed to me they kind of left that thread dangling. Gordon takes out the two kidnappers, then he's talking to Bruce and then Selina with no real mention of what happened next.

I agree that they have a good actress playing Selina Kyle. If she is 13 or so in real life, she can probably nail the snarky nature of the character without having to act too much.

FWIW, I too don't like how they hit us over the head with certain characters. Lingering on Edward Nygma like that was way too much overkill.

Erin Richards (Barbara Kean) was on Good Day LA yesterday here in California plugging Gotham. Kind of a lame interview, but I found her very cute and charming. She's from Wales in the UK and speaks with a very noticeable accent. She said she was a fan of Ben McKenzie from his The OC days.

Interesting. It's taken me 6 months to get through the first season of Arrow. Finally made it last week. It started strong but never rose above 'good' into 'great' territory for me. I think the b-movie nature of the island segments really brings the show down. However, I've watched the first 3-4 of season two and it's picked up considerably.

On the flipside, I'm mostly loving Gotham. I think the big difference between the two are the setting. The gritty noir look and feel of Gotham makes it a character in itself. Star City on the other hand is pretty generic and has yet to rise above looking like a better than average CW show.

That answers my question. He seems like a total dick and was wondering if he was like that with Bruce early on, tough loving.

He didn't - it's a cockney accent. Sean Pertwee is from London - not sure if it's his natural accent or he's exaggerating it a little, but it's English none the less.

Alfred was never this tough on Bruce, but the Alfred from the Earth 2 line of books (though there has only been one volume so far that came out 2 years ago) has a much tougher gruffer Alfred. That Alfred is former SAS (which he is in many incarnations), but the Earth 2 Alfred is very much the reluctant caregiver of Bruce. I think they might have taken inspiration from that? I can't say I care for it. It feels like this show's Alfred is borderline abusive to Bruce.

Penguin's mom looked like someone fresh off the set of Batman Returns too. Or any other Tim Burton movie.

I think that Arrow does a better job at those comic book references where as Gotham just hits you over the head with them that you're surprised that there isn't a giant "POW" or "BAM!" sound bubble that flashes on the screen whenever they do it.

Isn't it Earth One? Or am I confusing something here. The Alfred from that is the first thing that came to my mind too, which I also didn't like.

Re: Gotham (S1E2) - "Selina Kyle" - 9/29/2014

Really liked the pilot episode a lot. Thought it was great set-up.

This one, though... left me indifferent. Jada Pinkett Smith is terrible. Bullock needs another dimension because his one-note, angry-corrupt bitterness is already growing tiresome. The bad guys (was that really Frank Whaley and Lily Taylor?? Man they look old...) were a wee bit over the top for my tastes.

Still, there were enjoyable bits. Loving the Bruce/Alfred interactions. Selina Kyle is intriguing enough as a character (and a nice change from the serial dourness of the rest of the show), and Jim Gordon plays the Gary Cooper role nicely. The growing Penguin menace is easily the most memorable aspect of the show.

I figure once Gotham coalesces and finds it footing, it can make for a fine show. But it's not there yet.

Re: Gotham (S1E2) - "Selina Kyle" - 9/29/2014

I really want to like this series, but I'm just having a hard time caring about any of the characters. The villains are so twisted and dark I don't enjoy any of them and Gordon just doesn't have my interest. Selina is the most interesting character to me, but I just don't see them following the kids on an ongoing basis--certainly not as much as Gordon and his crew.

I'm out for now, but may try picking it up again midseason if the buzz increases.

^ I hear you. I thought the pilot was decent, but didn't care for the second episode. I'll give it a couple more episodes to see if it improves and finds a groove, but at this rate it's doubtful I'll stick around for the entire season.
