The last episode on spanking was freaking hilarious.

re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
The spanking one was good but I really love the head nod one. I have that discussion at work all the damn time. One coworker is like "you say so much with just a head nod". Yeah it gives a lot of info with no words. btw, I'm urban in the sense that I live in a city and I'm a minority but not black, I'm Puerto Rican, so zoomgirl, can I get pass? I offer no magic, but I get the "why do Puerto Ricans do...." and I have to say, I've never seen any Puerto Rican doing that... and it just leads to more stupid questions.

re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
I didn't like the pilot episode because I just disliked the idea that black folks just can't be people too or a regular family (like Modern Family, for example), it has to constantly call out their blackness as if they are an alien life form.
With that said, I watched the next two episodes and by the end of the third episode (The Nod), I'm really digging this show. I think it's settling down and finding itself. And as a fan of The Bernie Mac Show, you can see a small taste of that show's imprint here (likely due to Wilmore). |
re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
Yeah I like it a lot too. Better than Modern Family is now.
|
re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
Like I said, I like this show. But i'm realizing all the Black folks around me either hate it, or refuse to watch it. Am I an "Uncle Tom? :(
In all honesty the name "black-ish" is a huge turn off for many of them so they won't even give it a chance. They figure the show is just a bunch of disrespectful shit on TV to make Blacks look like Clowns or sell outs. |
re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
I think it has more to do with Anthony Anderson than the name of the show. He doesn't have the black following that a Bernie Mac had.
|
re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
The name of the show almost made me not watch it. Same problem Black Jesus title had. The show isn't about race issues so the name is misleading.

Honestly, the title made me feel like this would be Cosby Show: The Next Generation and I grew so tired of Bill and Co. I personally related to the Bundy's more than that crew. I was absolutely surprised at how much I enjoyed it, especially in the family trying to learn what it means to be persons of color in today's age, in a new social standing but not making it a soapbox show. The spanking episode with Traci trying to avoid her son's stare, comedy gold. |

I don't care, I will keep watching...it's finding its footing and I find it really funny and a bit true to life (mine anyway!) |

Aside from Tracee Ellis Ross's creepy eyes freaking me out, this show is fantastic. One of the best sitcoms to come out in years I think.

Middle class? lol...If a household of a doctor and a VP of a marketing company is middle class, I guess I'm basically living in Somalia.

Just doing a catch up on these now and I'm enjoying the series a lot.
Had zero idea that the wife was Diana Ross' daughter. |
re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
Caught up on Hulu, I like this show.
Not sure where the internet hate comes from, but I assume it's from the same people that had a problem with Dear White People - and not realizing that both have to do with an idea of race that doesn't apply in the modern world. Really enjoyed the Halloween episode, was fun, poor Josh . Liked the barrage of diabetes jokes and startled black man stats. |
re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
This show just gets better and better to me. When I watched Modern Family, the stories I always enjoyed the most were those of the Dunphy's, and Blackish feels like a different take on Dunphy storylines without having to deal with the (sometimes) bloat of the other wings of the family. I'm just loving the balance of the attention all of the characters get in this show.
And I cannot stress enough how great these kid actors are. And Charlie has grown into a nice addition to the show as well. I really enjoy his small dose, high return, role on the show. Dude is comical. Blackish over everything right now. |
re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
I really like the wife. So many shows have the wife just as the straight man to the husband's wacky adventures, but she seems to be pretty equal to him.
The kids are great as well. |
re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
I think they do it right where the straight man is split between the parents equally. It just depends on the situation.
Loved her pulling up in the SLS at the end. Real diamonds are so heavy. Oddly enough, this show and The Middle pair up better, they're sort of modern TGIF shows (but better than anything back then), than this and Modern Family. But I'm glad this is pulling in strong numbers. |
re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
I really agree about Rainbow. She could have so easily been the nagging scoffing wife at Dre's zany antics.
|
re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
Granted I only watch 2 comedies a week, this and BBT. But this has my biggest laughs of the week and it isn't even close.
I thought the kids were going to play more of a background role but they have all been given distinct personalities that actually work. I did miss Pops this week. |

I checked out this show after Grantland.com did a piece praising the show. I really like it. The spanking episode was absolutely hysterical. I'm definitely setting a season pass for it, and I'm recommending it to my friends.

re: black-ish (ABC) - Series Thread - premiering 9/24/14
Interesting to read the takes on this show. It's weird for me...sometimes I love it, sometimes I think it misses massive opportunities. Personally I don't like the name, because it seems misleading. Admittedly, I don't know what I'd prefer for it to be called, but "black-ish" just seems bizarre. I loved The Bernie Mac Show, and I feel that show tackled race about as much as this show, and I think it would've been weird to have called Bernie's show "black-ish."
With that said, I think the casting of the kids are great. In particular, I think the youngest daughter is probably the best young child (mixing cute and funny) actor I've seen on the screen since Raven Symone on The Cosby Show. Personally, I think the show falls a little short with the surrounding cast outside of the family, particularly Andre's job. I think they just come across as too over the top--every single person has to be weird or a heightened version of themselves. Just feels unnatural to me, especially the conversations that they have, but that's my personal preference, I guess. |

Hennessy shaken not stirred...
"Black people can't be racists" "I was robbed by a damn Mexican" "See, totally acceptable" Love this show. |

The black people can't be racist stuff had me cracking up.

Love this show, probably the only show that I need to watch as soon as it airs at this point.

"In 10 years we're all going to look Puerto Rican anyway."
"Just what you gonna need after knocking it out." This show makes me so sad because I know there is nowhere to go but down. It just hits on so many levels.. |
