Re: Garfunkel & Oates (IFC) - Series Thread
I watched the season, it was decent but uneven. I like their schtick and vibe more than the actual show at times. I did think the last couple of episodes were strong, which is a positive. Their comedy is so far off the beaten path that I would like it to stick around, if just to encourage an alternative approach.
The songs? I've never been much of a fan, so I mostly have to stomach them. This is one show that I think I would prefer in 15-minute segments instead of the more traditional 30-minute slot.

Here are my problems with the show:
The writing is very hit or miss. A lot of the episodes feel as if they're written around already existing songs or they try to shoehorn the existing songs in making it feel out of place with the rest of the episode. I love 29/31, but it felt entirely out of place in that episode earlier in the season.
The direction is very lackluster. Fred Savage doesn't have an eye for visuals (he's mostly known for his multi-camera work and Daddy Day Camp), so the whole show (and especially the musical segments) come off as very cheap looking. Not quite cable access, but almost to that level. Yet take a show like You're the Worst, which probably has even less of a budget, comes off as cinematic due to its camera and editing techniques.
I haven't watched the finale, but I'm in no rush as the show nose dived quickly after the first three episodes.
If it gets renewed, I'll stick around. If it gets cancelled, I really won't miss it.

Man, I had no idea what a "kazoo parade" was either.
Hell, I even Urban Dictionary'd it after the show just to see if they made it up. They did not.

Abby Elliot from SNL played one of the porn counterparts.

So dumb. Besides the fact that these two were G&O for years before the show, it'd be like saying the Tenacious D movie would've been better had they cast more attractive actors. The problem is the writing.

Actually that would have probably made the Tenacious D movie better. Maybe it would have gotten me to actually watch it. Put Seth Rogen and James Franco in and I would've watched it.

The point is that they're the ones who write and sing their songs. It would be like having A Hard Days Night with actors filling in for the Beatles.

If they where really hot, it might make the dirty songs a little more fun.

I've seen Rikki Lindhome naked and she's plenty attractive top to bottom.

Yeah, she has a crazy long fully nude scene in the movie "Hell Baby", and while it's played for laughs, she pretty much shows off a near prefect body, even if she's a bit too skinny.

The fact that they're not bombshells and have the cute/innocent thing going on, is one of the reasons the dirty songs are so funny.
Comedy 101, folks.

IFC has opted to not renew this for a second season.

So is this program worth watching through? I noticed it's now on Netflix, and they were the funniest part of a mediocre comedy I saw the other night (they had a song in it called The Last Penis) which ran all of 1 minute but I'm thinking if they do 5 minute songs it may be overkill.

Ah, just go to YouTube and watch a bunch of their videos. I like G&O's songs so I watched the show. It was amusing, but I get more laughs just from their songs. Particularly "The Loophole"
