The Leftovers (S1E06) -- "Guest" -- 8/03/14

Nora (Carrie Coon) takes care of unfinished business in Mapleton before heading to New York for the Second Annual DROP (Departure Related Occupations and Practices) conference. Upset that her ID has been pinched, she scours the convention for her imposter while wearing a "Guest" badge, and ends up getting detoured by an amorous salesman, a bestselling author and a rogue attendee.
Written by Damon Lindelof & Kath Lingenfelter; directed by Carl Franklin.

Haven't had a chance to watch last week's episode yet, but I think that I'll try to finish the season, even though I know a lot of people here have dropped it (and rightfully so). It's been a huge disappointment to me, but since I'm curious as to how it all plays out as compared to the book. My wife has been watching it, but I think that she's out now as well.

I'm enjoying it. Really starting to like the characters and I never know where they are going with the stories so I stay interested. However I do watch it alone as my wife says it is to depressing to watch with the thought of work the next morning. She has to be in the right frame of mind.

I thought it was interesting. That chick has been fascinating to watch over the series. She is a mess.

I really liked this episode...isn't it funny how the two really good shows this season haven't focused on the main storyline? If THE LEFTOVERS were about this family (remember, the priest is her brother) instead of the Garvey family, it would be a much better show.

Yea, the stand alone episodes really seem to be where this show shines (if there is any glimmer at all!)
In the book these characters were minor and there was no backstory fleshed out at all. The show writers seem to be at their best when they can grab onto the kernal of one of these characters and what made them interesting--for example: a priest who tries to disprove those who raptured deserved it, a mother who lost her child and clings to the loss by watching Spongebob and buying cereal pretending they are still alive.
Then they expand the history of the character with an interesting backstory or try to explain why they are the way they are functioning within this Post rapture world.
For me that is far more interesting than just recreating the book storyline. Among Tom Perrotta's books, I would say the Leftovers was among the weaker ones, basically a clever idea that didn't really go anywhere. That pretty much sums up the show when its trying to cling to that storyline.

I enjoyed this one. I like the Nora character and her situation.
They definitely didn't delve into her character that much in the book, but they really didn't need to... it's very useful in the show though.

What the fuck is Wayne doing to "take the pain away"? A hug? Something is clearly going on there, and I wonder if they'll ever explain it. I can understand not explaining how/why the departed disappeared since the show is about how people react afterward, but if they don't explain Wayne then that's bad storytelling.

I don't think Wayne is actually doing anything magical to take peoples' pain away. But he's making them BELIEVE that he's taking their pain away, which I guess is all that matters. He's like a pain placebo.

I really dig the show. HBO has struck out with the majority of their recent original content in my opinion, but this has a vintage feel to it (somewhat reminiscent to Carnivale). I'll be bummed if it's not renewed. Anyway, I agree with others that the standalone episodes are great, and Nora Durst is an interesting character. "Fuck your daughter!" had to be my favorite part of the episode.

I don't know, I could be wrong but something tells me Wayne's attempt didn't' work on Nora. At least not long term....
