I know the cast of Glow was paid for season 4. They had already shot close to two episodes before production shut down though. I wonder if you have to still to pay cast and creators after renewing a show and then reversing that renewal? I would assume they have contracts that state they get paid.

Were the cast represented by sag or another guild with some leverage ?

I thought it was a requirement to have a SAG card to work in Hollywood?

I assume some sort of penalty applies when you take an actor off the market by picking up their option for the new season and cancel the show anyway.

No idea.

For example, does sag send picketers to disrupt and raise hell at on-location shoots which hire non-sag actors?

Sounds like the equivalent of severance pay.

Kind of. You can dump the actor without paying them any time before the option strike date. If you pick up their option you prevent them from looking for work elsewhere because they’re committed to your show. Other shows will have finalized their casts so if the actor’s current show is canceled there is usually no space for them until next year.

No. Otherwise you’ll never get work. However, you can’t intermix non union and union workers.

"Reality" show cast members aren't SAG members. That's why Hollywood fell in love with reality shows in the first place.

Filthy RIch was so-so, I thought. But I didn't see enough of Next to have an opinion on it yet. Wish they would have waited awhile for that one.

Next has only aired like 3 episodes. It got pulled for a week because of the World Series. It was already unlikely to continue beyond these filmed episodes. This was suppose to air 8 months ago, but got moved to Fall as filler due to FOX needing content.

It got very little promotion, so I'm not surprised barely anyone noticed it existed. I watched the 1st episode and I'll continue on for a few more to see how it goes.

NBC's "Connecting" -the Pandemic-centric Comedy, -has been cancelled and the remaining episodes will air on Peacock. Some of you might be surprised that this was actually a show....

Watched season 1 and decided to pass on season 2. Not really surprised it got canned.

Superstore will be ending with Season 6. With America having bowed out of the show it was just a matter of time. As entertaining as the supporting cast is on the show without the main star this cancellation news was inevitable. It was fun while it lasted.

Were people really tuning in just for America though?

The remaining cast was great. Actually, they didn’t need her as a “crutch.” Especially with the fantastic B stories. I chalk it up to NBC brass thinking “name” stars carry shows.

The CW is kicking February off with a blizzard (ha!) of renewals, picking up additional seasons of a dozen current series — including breakout hit Walker.

In addition to the aforementioned Jared Padalecki-fronted reboot, the list of shows confirmed to return for the 2021-22 TV season includes The Flash (Season 8), Riverdale (Season 6), DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (Season 7), All American (Season 4), Charmed (Season 4), Legacies (Season 4), In the Dark (Season 4), Roswell, New Mexico (Season 4), Batwoman (Season 3) Nancy Drew (Season 3) and, yes, Dynasty (Season 5).

Re: The One and Only TV FAQ Thread Plus Renewal and Cancellation News

Wow, they pretty much renewed everything except Superman and Lois, which hasn't aired yet, but that's a forgone conclusion.

Told you ratings for the most part don't mean shit. Batwoman hasn't done good with live overnights, but it's still a known IP and is probably making money elsewhere.

It's my understanding that everything got renewed because Covid has more or less shut down their development pipeline for the time being. They need content to fill out their schedule.

CW has plenty of content since they have several held over shows (Roswell, Supergirl, Dynasty, In the Dark) and they buy a bunch of international shows.

This mass renewal is normal for CW. Any shows 2+ years old (AA, In the dark, roswell etc) have massive Netflix deals and the newer ones are HBO MAX now.

I think the only show CW “cancelled” last year was Katy Keene, which was weird since they commissioned an extra 13 scripts.

Re: The One and Only TV FAQ Thread Plus Renewal and Cancellation News

Imo, The CW really became a dumpster fire when they stopped relying on ratings to determine renewals... lots of bad stuff just continues to get renewed solely because these streaming deals means they're still making money even if no one is watching.
