Re: Masters of Sex (S2E01) -- Season Premiere -- "Parallax" -- 7/13/14

is it possible to jump into 2nd season without seeing 1st?

i saw S1,E1 on Showtime Anytime and really enjoyed it. thus, won't have time to get all caught up but want to start DVR and watching for lack of anything better...

Saw a preview for this and thought it looked pretty interesting. Might check out the first season at some point.

If anyone started the show tonight without seeing the first season I have no idea how they could follow what was going on as it pretty much just jumped right back in where it left off.

Great start to the season.

I watched the first two episodes of the first season, and while it wasn't bad, I was a bit too bored by it to continue. Should I give it another shot?

IMO, it's really well acted and directed. But, it's not for everyone. It's a slow burn period relationship drama, primarily about Masters and Johnson and how they became who they were known for. It also deals with how taboo sex was back in that time period. Sheen and Caplan are fantastic playing the parts. Some good guest stars in season 1 as well.

It's a pretty high profile show and Sheen and Caplan are getting alot of recognition for it. But, don't feel like you have to force yourself to watch it just because of it's acclaim if it really doesn't interest you.

But if you do have the time, you absolutely need to start from the very beginning.

That was a very sad episode all around.

Didn't like all the flashback stuff. I got a little confused about the timeline, especially about the hotel. Was all the hotel stuff on the same day or different times?

They didn't explain everything, and it's out of chronological order. Just about the hotel, the two of them were definitely there on multiple occasions. It started out as a brief meeting for Masters to "apologize for last night" where they would not be seen by anyone they know. Then it evolved into them getting a room under alias as husband and wife, and eventually they became frequent guests that were warmly greeted by the hotel staff.

Yeah, the Beau Bridges scenes were all quite painful to watch.

Really hating the whole Masters and Johnson romance storyline. Will-they/won't-they, does she love him, does he love her, etc. I don't fucking care. It really drags the show down.

I like all the other stuff.

The show covers historic events, about their studies. So even with amped up drama, it still followings along more or less what happened in real life.

If anyone is currently going through season one, I could use a reminder on why Bill Masters despises his mother so?

All I could recall was that Essie was not a good mother and wasn't there for him in his childhood.

The "amped up drama" is the problem - I'm sure there was much less drama in reality. And regardless, just because it happened in real life doesn't mean they need to include it in the show - much like shows/movies include things that didn't happen actually didn't happen in the name of artistic license. The writers need to stop using the "relationship" as a crutch - it drags the show down.

I think that was pretty much it... and she wasn't there to protect Bill from his father who was abusive - if I recall correctly.

Ann Dowd sure gets around. This show, True Detective and The Leftovers.

1) He feels she was intentionally oblivious to his father's abuse - best indicated by how she tells a story from his childhood that she finds amusing but was actually a cause of years of pain and humiliation to Bill

2) He feels she goaded Libby into getting pregnant and doted on her prior to her miscarriage. He blames her largely for the child he now has and didn't want

3) She could tell by their interactions at dinner that Bill was screwing his "secretary" and called him out on it.
