That's exactly what I was thinking while watching. I had had a shitty couple days, this certainly brightened my mood.

In that case, the show has nothing going for it, as almost all the characters were unlikable and/or uninteresting. If the show is about the people, they fucked up since I don't really care about any of them.

Also, it just felt like network TV show, like Under the Dome, or another show I'm forgetting from a couple years ago where people disappeared. And I don't mean they were like those network shows because of their mysteries, but because they felt homogenized and uninteresting like a lot of network TV shows, rather than a show on HBO.

It was shot like shit as well. Berg's a decent enough director, but that scene with the protesters and the riot was filmed and edited like shit. It was laughably amateurish.

I'll see if it gets better or more interesting, but they need to ramp up the writing.

Saw someone call this show "misery porn". I definitely agree with that. Just watching a bunch of people sitting around being miserable.

This was absolutely terrible. How this carps gets made instead of something like Y The Last Man is beyond me. The characters are all so pathetic and miserable and they're seemingly no direction here. The party was probably the most realistic thing to me as people especially younger people would become extremely jaded from an event as this. There wasn't enough anarchy for me either. That smoking cult is an interesting idea however, they would've been murdered not long after they started pulling their stalker crap.

Exactly. I always give any new show I've decided to watch about 3-4 episodes before I decide to bail. It's a catch 22 for any Pilot episode because you want the viewer to come back to watch again so you try to make it interesting. But sometimes there is so much set-up that pays off later, you may have lost the viewer already.

As I said, I was intrigued by the show and I am on the fence as to whether I will like it in the end. I will give it a few more shows, and then see what happens.

Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Big Love, Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Veep, Oz and more - basically, a majority of HBO shows have hit the ground running with interesting, if not likeable, characters with their very first episode. This was the exception.

Has there been any talk of a second season being ordered already? This could easily be one and done.

I just hope they where all the people disappeared to (with long scientifically accurate descriptions and equations) in the first 5 minutes of the next episode. Or else i'm going to watch all season and complain

Not sure what to make of this show just yet. The pilot showed promise...now depends on whether the show can deliver. I'm sure answers will start trickling in over the subsequent weeks...just a matter of time to determine whether we actually care.

Re: The Leftovers (S1E01) -- New HBO Drama -- "Pilot" -- 6/29/14

Usually the Pilot episode (or episode 1) is supposed to be the strongest episode (sometimes movie quality) to get people interested and fired up to want to watch more.

It seems like in this forum especially, most Pilots get very lukewarm responses like....Meh, I may watch a few more episodes...etc etc. I haven't seen too many posters here who thought the 1st episode of a new series was so awesome that they were sold right away. I think The Leftovers may be a case where the premise may be really tough sell to get people interested right away based off 1 episode.

I assume HBO went with this project because it would be cheaper to film than more fanciful concepts. This is what is known as a slot-filler.

I don't think I've ever seen a show where the pilot was the best episode. They are usually just the flashiest.

That was HBO's MO several years ago after Rome and Carnivale didn't live up to expectations (ratings-wise). They scaled-back the production value of pipeline shows at the time (i.e., John from Cincinnatti, Tell Me You Love Me) which didn't net out as anticipated. Of course the investment (and gamble) in GoT paid off, let's hope this isn't a repeat of past missteps.

They revealed this about 20 minutes into the episode when he hit the picture.

No they didn't because they didn't show who was in the picture he hit. You can assume it was someone who had somehow gone, but not the actual person. They only showed the picture later, after the reveal, when the daughter was picking out the broken glass.

I know I wasn't sold on Six Feet Under based on the pilot but that turned around quickly.

More recently, I liked The Newsroom right away.
