You've talked me into giving this show a watch. =)

While I think that "Penny Dreadful" is a good show, I find it a bit pretentious. "Salem" , on the other hand, is pure in-your-face "B Movie" Horror, playing fast and loose with its period details and doling out plenty of gore. The cast is quite good, particularly if you can appreciate Shane West's completely "Contemporary" performance and his 24/7 dyspeptic scowl.

Penny Dreadful is much more of a true period show with its literary dialogue and milieu. Salem likes getting down and dirty in its horror.

I was actually afraid the show would lose steam in its second season since so much plot had been advanced in season one, but the addition of European witches added so much to the story.

Sounds interesting. I didn't think WGN would get down and dirty, but I am in now.

I wonder what they're going to do with Anne Hale now that she's gone to the dark side. Foolishly so too, since unlike George Sibley Cotton Mather is the town drunk, with neither property nor political favor she can use for herself. She made him a great burden rather than cultivating an asset.

Looks like they're postponing the new season until October. Disappointing.

I think it bodes well for the long-term future of the show. This always felt like a show meant for the Fall and should get a bigger audience.

As a summer show it has little competition. Now it's going to get crushed by major network shows.

Season three oddly premieres on November 2nd, back on WGN America. That is a Wednesday.

This is the one show I wish had been put out on Blu-ray. I think it would have driven awareness for what has become a great horror series.

Everything in "Salem" has gone to hell when WGN America's hit supernatural thriller returns Halloween Week, Wednesday, November 2 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. In advance of the premiere, the network released a riveting new trailer featuring a gruesome twist on "Cats Cradle." The devil has arrived in "Salem" and everything he promised the witches is a lie! He has his own plans that will bring nothing but death and destruction and there's only one person on earth that can stop him. The only problem is - she's dead. Or is she? In the most twisted season yet, legendary recording artist Marilyn Manson guest stars as the bloody barber surgeon Thomas Dinley. In the premiere episode, written by series creators Brannon Braga and Adam Simon and directed by Nick Copus, John Alden (Shane West) is forced to bury his love Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery), and her mysterious servant Tituba (Ashley Madekwe) now with the abilities of the seer, has a horrifying vision of hell on earth. She knows the only person who can stop this evil and beat the devil (Oliver Bell) - is the very witch that birthed him, his mother, Mary Sibley. Meanwhile, Isaac (Iddo Goldberg) takes it upon himself to attempt to clean up Knocker's Hole and get revenge against Mercy (Elise Eberle), who has found her calling running the brothel. Still struggling with her new powers, Anne Hale (Tamzin Merchant) continues to imprison her husband Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel), using her familiar Brown Jenkins. With the help of Baron Sebastian Marburg (Joe Doyle) and his old ally and fallen angel, The Sentinel (Samuel Roukin), the devil is planning a massive attack and war with God that will culminate in the ultimate showdown between good and evil!

What happened to episode 5? We skipped straight from episode 4 to episode 6.

Darn. I liked this show. Is the cancellation why episode 5 is wasn't broadcast?

It was a mislabel then, because it was ep5 that aired.

Also apparently ep6 aired on TNT yesterday. o.o

Re: Salem (WGN America) -- S: Janet Montgomery -- Series Thread

Only 4 episodes left till series end.

They had talked about this going for a few more seasons before, but it seems viewership took a huge dive and led to it being canceled. At least they apparently were able to know in advance and give us some sort of series closure with the end from what they said in the recent news.
