This was initially destined for FX. When AHS: Coven (also about witches) was greenlit, they passed it along to WGN. Their first scripted series.

WGN? Pardon my naïve-ness, but is this a basic cable station or premium?

basic cable. its bascially like TBS. a "Supersation" they play a lot of Bulls & Cubs games
WGN America is not the same as WGN-TV anymore. They share some programming, like the WGN News and sports, but they are moving further away from eachother. My guess is that this show will only be on WGN America, as WGN-TV is a CW affiliate. |

You're thinking is a few years in the past. The Superstation era is long gone. TBS branched away from it in 2007, with the original WTBS station in Atlanta becoming WPCH, and TBS developing the Very Funny tagline and dropping Braves coverage in favor of a national MLB package.

If any of you even watched the trailer, it clearly says "WGN America"

Re: Salem (WGN) - New drama about Salem witch trials -- Coming April 20th
So the entire Chicago market gets left out?

That would push it into Canada as well, as most systems up there have the Chicago feed as opposed to the America feed. |
Salem (WGN America) -- S: Janet Montgomery -- Series Thread

Set in 17th century colonial Massachusetts—a significant time in the history of American politics, religion and society—Salem brings you the real story behind the infamous witch trials. In Salem, witches are real, and they’re behind it all. Salem Village and Salem Town feuded over property, grazing rights and church rights. The government was dominated by Puritan leaders. People were scrutinized closely and this resulted in obvious discord. They were afraid of being persecuted for anything that may offend the Puritan mindset. The word “witch” seemed an easy and appropriate curse hurled at someone who behaved abnormally. It was this setting of extremism and isolation that led to a period of witch hunts, where men and women were hanged and burnt at the stake with the belief that they, as witches, had taken to Satan over God. Were the Puritans right in their actions? Were the people innocent? Who were the real witches? In WGN America’s new series Salem, we are led into a dark and mystical period of American history. In Salem, the witches are a part of day-to-day life, but they are not who or what they seem to be. Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery) is the most powerful witch of Salem. She is the wife of George Sibley (Michael Mulheren), the ailing, wealthy head of the Selectmen of Salem. Leading a double life, Mary depends on her faithful servant and friend, Tituba (Ashley Madekwe), a mysterious and ageless accomplice to carry out her agenda. Mary is ruthless, yet vulnerable; her world is torn into two when Salem’s native son, John Alden (Shane West) returns after many years at war. John and Mary were lovers before he left the Puritan town of Salem. John, a war veteran, takes on the role of being the voice of reason in a town that is obsessed with witch hunts and unexplained phenomena. He realizes that suspicion and fear result in innocent people being victimized. On the contrary, Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel) is a well-educated local aristocrat who fans the flames of Salem’s witch hunt. John and Mary find themselves in the middle of an epic romance, even as Cotton’s witch hunts engulf the town in hysteria, horror, and the supernatural. The real story of Salem emerges from the foggy depths of history on April 20th, 10/9c, only on WGN America. 13 episodes for season 1 Trailer: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/fTxZYR3W8bE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> This is airing tonight at 10pm ET. Alot of shows are airing this time. I assume some of you will have to DVR a re-air. |
re: Salem (WGN America) -- : Janet Montgomery -- Series Thread
Unfortunately, if you live in the Chicago area (like me) which is the home of the original WGN, you probably won't be able to watch this show. If you have Dish or DirecTV, you can watch it, but no cable system in Chicagoland carries this. It's not running on Chicago's WGN which is a CW affiliate. Will this be available online? Otherwise I'll have to wait for a potentional blu-ray release.

Never heard of WGN America ...
Premise is promising; trailer has me on the fence ... But that write-up is awful! Maybe it's because I'm liking TURN so far, but I'd like to see AMC take a stab at this. |
re: Salem (WGN America) -- : Janet Montgomery -- Series Thread
As already mentioned, WGN originated in Chicago long time ago. It's growth started from being the Cubs' broadcasting station, and went on to bigger things much like TBS did in Atlanta to become a "superstation". WGN America seems to be going down the same path as TBS did years ago, going national, and is delving into original programming now.

re: Salem (WGN America) -- : Janet Montgomery -- Series Thread
So did anyone watch this, and does it EARN it's TV-MA rating?
I put it on the DVR, but will wait for feedback before I bother getting invested in this. It looks pretty fucking wild, though. :chainsaw::johnwoo::rock: |
re: Salem (WGN America) -- : Janet Montgomery -- Series Thread
Well, the lead chick is pretty much naked in one scene, so.. yeah. Braga and Simon said they were pushing the envelope of what can be shown on tv. To the point that when they showed the first 25 mins at Wonder Con they still censored part of the exorcism.

re: Salem (WGN America) -- : Janet Montgomery -- Series Thread
For those who missed this like I did, they are re-airing it the next four nights at 10/9c so plenty of chances to catch it.

For a channel that some here say they don't get, this did really well last night. 2.3M total viewers, 1.5 for the first airing. That's really good considering the competition last night and being a holiday. This is WGN America's first original show. I'll watch my recording later today. |
re: Salem (WGN America) -- : Janet Montgomery -- Series Thread
This show was advertised to death on CW affiliates.

re: Salem (WGN America) -- : Janet Montgomery -- Series Thread
And the award for worst acting in a period piece EVER goes to:
Shane West. Good God! |

re: Salem (WGN America) -- : Janet Montgomery -- Series Thread
Well, that was an interesting 1st episode.
Brannon Braga certainly pushed the TV-MA rating as far as he could. Near full Janet Montgomery nudity along with some Doggy-style sex. Almost softcore porn like. at Mary pulling the frog out of the old man's mouth, having it suck her wound and the stuffing it back in his mouth. Some freaky elements too like that young girl who was attacked by that demon and the other young girl, who pointed out the old man as a witch. |
re: Salem (WGN America) -- : Janet Montgomery -- Series Thread
We really dug it. We gave it a season pass. It's not a long time investment and it's kinda fun.
