I would not make a blind buy on this program, no matter how much you like the original or even its concept in general. You might have buyer's remorse. This series seems to have become some kind of political statement to make by its fans against religion.

I wouldn't say it's anti-religion. It is anti-fundamentalism and against people placing literal interpretations of religious works over scientific discovery.

I dunno, I thought the little jabs now and then to be rather annoying and bringing up a subject that's rather irrelevant.

I'd like to see Neil get a weekly show where he can still talk layman's terms but doesn't need to dumb it down like he had to for the COSMOS series. Basically a TV version of his podcast.
I only watched the first three COSMOS shows...did it get any better/more interesting? All the historical cartoon stuff was annoying.

I left the show after a couple episodes. I think they injected stuff they didnt need to like science vs religion. I know there are historical facts dating to a time when that took place but they seem to take a bigger jab at it. I'm also not a fan of the editing. It seems poorly put together with a lot of filler stuff like the spaceship flying then commercial break. Seems out of place when it just flies for a few seconds for no reason but we have to see it.
I think Neil could do a better job on the science channel by himself and just teach us science.

I don't see why they can't just tell us the facts without telling us why the facts were hindered for years, decades and sometimes centuries. What could the world possibly learn from that. Its likes they want us not to repeat the same mistakes of the past which never happens. Why I can't think of a single instance in modern times where scientific progress was stifled because of some kind of agenda.

He'd approve, Sagan was a massive pothead.
On another side note, the religious aspect was a big thing with Sagan, in a fundamentalist standpoint of religion vs. science (and it potentially deterring progress). He was not an Atheist (defined as knowing there is no God) though, he always claimed we didn't know nearly enough about the Universe to prove or disprove a God. He also saw God as the culmination of laws that govern our being (ie: Speed of Light) and thought it would be ridiculous to pray to the law of Gravity. I think this version of Cosmos, while nothing on the original, conveyed that part pretty well.

As he well expressed in the original Cosmos, Carl Sagan's view was to "save a step" in explaining origins which basically eliminates the need for a god or gods

Some quotes by Carl Sagan from the original Cosmos on religion:
The new series is just a continuation of the main viewpoint of the old series.
In Cosmos, Carl Sagan said the following:
"In many cultures it is customary to answer that God created the universe out of nothing. But this is mere temporizing. If we wish courageously to pursue the question, we must, of course ask next where God comes from. And if we decide this to be unanswerable, why not save a step and decide that the origin of the universe is an unanswerable question? Or, if we say that God has always existed, why not save a step and conclude that the universe has always existed?"
"What do you do when you are faced with several different gods each claiming the same territory? The Babylonian Marduk and the Greek Zeus was each considered master of the sky and king of the gods. You might decide that Marduk and Zeus were really the same. You might also decide, since they had quite different attributes, that one of them was merely invented by the priests. But if one, why not both? And so it was that the great idea arose, the realization that there might be a way to know the world without the god hypothesis."
"Those afraid of the universe as it really is, those who pretend to nonexistent knowledge and envision a Cosmos centered on human beings will prefer the fleeting comforts of superstition. They avoid rather than confront the world. But those with the courage to explore the weave and structure of the Cosmos, even where it differs profoundly from their wishes and prejudices, will penetrate its deepest mysteries."

The latest episode of the series (episode #12) was the most thorough and clearly explained presentation for Climate Change being both real and mostly man-made that I've ever seen.
(Now just wait and see how the Climate Change deniers respond to it.)

Here is Carl Sagan's segment from the original Cosmos on the murder of Hypatia by a Christian mob in ancient Alexandria. Content-wise, it's not presented very differently than the new Cosmos segment on the execution of Bruno.
