How was this not the pilot? Did they dump it completely and start over? It has a total pilot vibe.

It still has way too much of the "sanitized for US broadcast TV" vibe, though. Given all the drinking, whoring and drug use in the original series, I think it'd fare much better on HBO or Showtime. And although I'm one of the 17 people in the US who actually likes Greg Kinnear, he just can't hold a candle to Richard Roxburgh's Cleaver Greene. I guess that's not a problem, since I've never met anyone else who's seen the original.

I have several thoughts about the pilot, but they might be spoilery, so I'll keep them to myself.

Season 3 of the Australian series begins Feb. 9, Richard Roxburgh is awesome!!

What's the original.

Based on an Australian TV series also with the same name. It was airing on Directv.

Sweet. I figured it was over after S2. Hope DTV continues airing it.

Doesn't even seem like they will air the pilot:

The early episodes will be aired out of order as the original pilot, written by Peter Duncan and directed by Sam Raimi, had "an overload of not drama ... but maybe a little sadness," according to producer Peter Tolan. He added, "[it] worked against the episode. And so we refigured it, sort of toning that down." The episode originally portrays Keegan Deane (Greg Kinnear) in an unhealthy mental and physical state

Kind of interesting, kind of boring. Sort of on the fence. I like Kinnear, so I'll give this a few more shots. I think the biggest problem is that this should've been a 30 minute show, not a full hour.

Re: Rake (FOX) Season 1 Thread - S: Greg Kinnear

So they either dumped the pilot and this season will only be 12 episodes, or they just randomly air the pilot and hope no one notices.

Sounds like it will get the Firefly treatment. I thought the first episode was reasonably promising.

I was looking forward to this, but I thought the first episode was very painful. I hate this guy. Kinnear's constant babbling is very annoying.

I thought that it was okay. I'd probably watch it when I could, but it's not a show I would consider a must see. The bitchy assistant aggravated me.

I watched the first episode which was OK. I'm going to give it a bit more time on my DVR. Thanks to Rex, I grabbed the Season 1 DVD set of the original show and I'm making my way through that. I initially had no idea this was a remake. Now that I've seen (via DVD) the tone and progression of the original, it's obvious to me this remake will never live up to the original, which is a much more adult show. I suspect it would have been a much better show on pay TV. As it is, it feels like watching the airline version of an R-rated movie.

Definitely interested in catching the original as well. Don't think that it airs here in Canada, but if anyone knows for sure, let me know.

Yeah, in the original series, Roxburgh's Cleaver Greene is much more charming than Kinnear's Deane. In an odd way, Roxburgh's Cleaver Greene is kind of like Don Draper, while Kinnear's Deane is more like Pete Campbell.... at least as far as "likeability" goes.

Who are his brother and sister-in-law? Do you mean Ben and Scarlet (Red)? Because I thought they made it clear that Ben was his best friend from law school.

In the original series, his name is "Barney" and he's Greene's solicitor (the series is set in Sydney, which is in New South Wales, which is one of two Australian states that still has separate solicitors and barristers, like the UK's legal system: basically, Barney goes out and gets the clients, does the research, hires investigators, etc, while Greene does all the arguing in court).

In the original series (spoilered because it might impact the plot down the road):

Spoiler:
Scarlet is a lawyer too. She takes a few years off to be a stay-at-home mom with the kids, which eventually makes her restless and unhappy. In a moment of weakness, she sleeps with Greene... which drives a wedge between Barney and Greene. I'm not sure the US version would go down that same path if she's supposed to be his sister-in-law.

For what it's worth (spoilered, contains speculation about previous spoilered content):

Spoiler:
In the original series, Greene has his own (really crappy) apartment. Why the US writers have him live with Ben is a mystery we don't know the answer to yet. If they want to have him eventually sleep with Red, they could just have Deane and Ben work together on cases.

See, that's the thing. In the original, he mostly hurts himself, or maybe others who are equally as screwed up as he is. I found the scene with the kids mildly amusing, but not especially "funny".

Also, in the original, Greene gets around almost exclusively by taxi. I can't remember if we know why that is (I think he sold his car to pay off his bookies but don't know for sure if that was the case). I guess cars are so integral to Los Angeles culture that the writers felt they needed to set up why he no longer has a car.

It's survived. I guess as an Olympics sacrificial lamb. Poor Michael Imperioli. Guest starring in the latest episode. His career has cratered.

DOA.

Original showed up on Netflix though, so I'll check it out when I get a chance.

I know that I've seen him in other things, but the only thing that I associated Roxburgh with is Moulin Rouge.

Catching up on some of these episodes and am enjoying it but I think that I missed some plot points. Did they show the kid taking the Sherlock pipe and I miss it?

I think they are showing things in the recaps that weren't actually in the previous eps.
