Re: The Arsenio Hall Show

No one's taking pot shots. I'd say the same thing if someone dismissed any show based on one hour.
The fact that you'd say it doesn't mean you'd be right. It's completely valid for someone to sample a show and decide after one episode it isn't for them. People do it all the time. IMO, you have no basis for suggesting someone who does so is somehow being silly.
I sampled one episode of TBBT (the first) and decided it wasn't for me. I was right, because whenever I've stumbled on a subsequent episode, it still isn't for me. Because I don't like sitcoms, and the fact that there are brilliant characters in it (which I love) doesn't outweigh that fact. On the other hand, I also dropped breaking bad after watching the first 10 minutes because it wasn't for me. As it turns out, I saw so many positive comments on-line that I went back and forced myself to sit through the whole first episode. So in that case I was wrong. But again, there's nothing "silly" about it. Sometimes you'll be right, sometimes you'll be wrong. But you can't watch every show that comes on TV from beginning to end hoping you'll grow to like the ones you don't like. To me, THAT would be silly.
Hell Conan took a couple years to get going.
Fallon & Kimmel took a few months. I just think going in expecting a home run the first week is impractical.
I still don't watch Conan or Kimmel. But Fallon? Well, I don't watch that either, but I try to keep track of musical guests. Why? Because the first time I watched, he hooked me. He's funny, "into" it, has a great band, and the put on some excellent performances. BTW, the sound quality of Arsenio's show wasn't A-1 for me either. I don't know why that'd be the case. I'll keep an eye on it.
I haven't seen it so I can't comment yet.
Drinks on me and we can call it a day.

Re: The Arsenio Hall Show
Nationally, Arsenio did a 1.9 rating with a 4 share which I think is pretty solid.
It also was the #1 late night show in the 18-49 demo (which is really all advertisers care about.)
That's the good news. The bad news is that in many markets (mine included) the show's ratings plummetted with each quarter hour. For example, in my city, Arsenio started with a 3.1. By the time the show ended, it was down to a 1.2.

I didn't even know Arsenio returned to TV until seeing this thread.
But I have been enjoying The ArScheerio Paul Show, in which Paul Scheer (of The League and NTSF:SD:SUV:: ) and other funny people recreate old Arsenio interviews:

It is just the first week and maybe he will get bigger and more guests relevant to 2013 and stars promoting their latest movies.
Shocked Magic Johnson or Eddie Murphy did not appear though I presume they will soon.

There are like dozens of other chat/late night shows everyone can watch to find that stuff out now. I want to know what happened to CMB,The Funky Bunk,C+C Music Factory and Cockaroach from the Cosby Show. That's who Arsenario should bring out. He should be the one to give America their early 90x fix. It is an untapped market.

I was thinking about how much really hasn't changed in late night TV over the past couple of decades since Arsenio aired and now, it's kind of interesting but there are now more minorities in the US and I highly doubt black people watch Letterman or Conan. Arsenio fills that gap nicely. It's a shame networks don't see the earning potential with a funny black/hispanic host. Hell even George Lopez had a decent run.

Lisa Kudrow is a brilliant actress known for her role as Phoebe Buffett on possibly the most watched tv show in the world as well as beloved cult hits Web Therapy and The Comeback. If that's bottom of the barrell what do you consider the top.

I think George Lopez only lasted maybe 2 seasons since he was on before Conan joined in 2010.
Arsenio is part of the CBS or Viacom family so he has a to chance to succeed plus he has a track record so I doubt he would be canned quickly.

In what universe are Web Therapy and The Comeback considered beloved anything? Is this the same one where Aaron Hernandez didn't commit murder?

Watched a little bit of it last night and he needs a desk to sit at. He's so figity with his hands that it became distracting to me. Maybe I didn't notice it back in the 90's with low def TV but it's there now.

Ariana Grande and Mac Miller were the musical guests so he is getting younger musical acts on the show.

...and he won't be able to do that until he establishes the show. Most celebs are usually plugging something and only have a limited amount of time they're available to do so...Letterman, Leno, Stewart, and Kimmel come first, then Conan, Fallon, and Ferguson. Arsenio needs to keep his ratings up so he can book some of those A-listers. Right now, he's cruising on friends/favors, but those will eventually run out.
I like Arsenio's monologues, but his interview skills need a freshning up - he's a little too guest-friendly (probably because he's just been bringing on friends at this point).
While his monologues are pretty solid, almost all of the skits/parodies he's done have been horrible - probably the sign of a bad writing staff.
Anyway, I wish the show was a little more edgy - he said one of the reasons he came back to Late Night was that he thought most of the other shows were rather dull, but his show is just mimicking all the others right now - he needs to mix things up a bit and not be afraid to be controversial.

Re: The Arsenio Hall Show
Well after watching around 10 eps. I have to say Arsenio's enemy is the Late Night formula itself.
Arsenio is a natural interviewer. He's charismatic and the guests love him. For the most part the conversations are organic like Ferguson gets away with and it's far more entertaining than forced setups on cue cards like Leno & Letterman. The only problem is when it gets a little too 'inside' where they are talking about some party or BBQ the guest and Arsenio happened to be at together. It's a fine line between a casual interview and chatting casually with a friend.
Where the show falls short is the skits and the monologue, which is where my first comment comes in. The skits are horrendous, so why have them? Because late night has determined you have to have them. Why not just have longer interviews? That's clearly his strong suit, so build the show around that instead of focusing on shit that doesn't work.
Now, the monologue... it's not as bad as the skits, but it's still very rough. That should improve with Arsenio getting back into a groove.
Lastly, the set... why the same exact set as before? I looks like they just pulled the sheets off the old set and set the cameras a rollin'. I like the couch & chair but change it up a bit to modernize it.
How I'd break down the show:
Interviews: A-
Monologue: C
Skits: F

Re: The Arsenio Hall Show
I've been pleasantly surprised by the show. That first episode was a bit rough, but I did what I said and gave it the week before making any decisions. I still record it nightly. I have no delusions my tastes are representative of the public at large, though it still has not had a moment that reaches what I consider the heights of Jimmy Fallon.
I do want Arsenio to have decent interviewing skills, but in my perfect world, he keeps doing what he's good at -- having a late night party. It's what he brings to the table that nobody else outside of maybe Fallon (in a different way) can touch.
I have no use for skits on any show, so I don't have much to say there. I skip them. But he's had on Kendrick Lemar and Emblem3 as well as other musical guests. I don't listen to either of them, but I think they were good bookings. I'm in the "like" column at this point.

Median age is 50.1? Ouch. There seems to be a disconnect between what he's trying to showcase and his actual audience. Maybe it'll take time to get younger viewers. Competing with Jay Leno was one thing, but he's going to have a really tough time competing with Fallon.
There was also a recent media dustup because in a news article about Fallon taking over The Tonight Show, Brian Williams left off Arsenio in showing the current late night hosts while talking about the late night talk show landscape. He subsequently apologized after Arsenio admonished him on the air while noting of everyone, he's the only one who actually competed with Johnny Carson and held his own.
On another note, Arsenio had on Steve Harris ( Eugene Young, The Practice) and Wood Harris (Avon Barksdale, The Wire) as they're currently co-starring on Justified. Like Arsenio, I had zero idea these guys are brothers. In fact, I'd have almost bet money they weren't if I'd been asked to.
Arsenio Hall and his talk show will return for a second season — and Jay Leno helped him to make the announcement. In his first TV appearance since signing off from The Tonight Show, Leno stopped by a taping of Hall’s show to help celebrate the news. [..] The show debuted in September and is watched by 6.7 million unique viewers weekly. The median age of Hall’s show is 50.1.
