Maybe Lea Michele doesn't want to return and they let her out of her contract. They could conceivably write a plotline that they got married and ran away to the far ends of the earth, or they got a performing gig somewhere. A little messier than writing him out completely, but it'd be the romantic resolution they didn't get in real life.

If they do decide to deal directly with the death of the actor on the show, it wouldn't be the first time a show has done this. I can only think of a couple instances, but when Phil Hartman died, they wrote it as his character on News Radio dying as well, and you could tell they were dealing with it on screen as they would be in real life, and it turned out to be a very touching episode. Another time is when Frances Heflin, who played Erica's mother Mona on All My Children, passed away. She had played the role for 24 years, and prior to her death, they had even written her character as having lung cancer, as she had in real life, and then they had a funeral for her character.

They incorporated John Ritter's death into 8 Simple Rules for Dating my Teenage Daughter pretty heavily for a few episodes.

I think Glee is the type of show that has tried to cover a wide range of viewers, younger and older alike. I'm over 40, and I absolutely loved the show for the first couple seasons. Death is something that everyone deals with, no matter what age, so I think they could write his death onto the show, and do it tastefully without insulting anyone. Personally, I think it would be an insult to what he's meant to the series to not acknowledge it on-screen in some way.
True, Phil Hartman didn't kill himself...he was the victim of a murder-suicide by his crazy wife. But, they didn't include that in the episode where his character died, and it was very well-done. I think they could let Finn die in a car crash or something, and let the other characters of the show deal with him being gone. From a ratings standpoint, I don't think this is something they can let slip by. One of the best episodes they've done so far is the one where Sue's sister died, so I have no reason to believe they'll just write off a major character without some grand tear-jerker.

Given Monteith's role on "Glee", I think they might have a start with Shue getting a phone call to inform him of the news and him just sitting in silence. It might then cut to several months in the future to officially start the season. Anyone who watches the show will know what it meant, and they can move from that point. They can then mention him in a passing sense. After that it will all depend on whether or not Michele feels like addressing it on the show.

Re: Sources: Cory Monteith of Glee found dead of drug OD
from NY Daily News, by Don Kaplan, 7/16/2013:
Fans of “Glee” may have to wait until November for the popular musical show’s return, sources said.
Fox officials began talks Monday about how to handle the death of “Glee” star Cory Monteith. One of the show’s breakout stars, Monteith was found dead Saturday, alone in a Vancouver hotel room.
One idea that is said to be getting a serious look is to delay production for about a month, “to let everyone breathe,” a Fox source said. That move would force the show to miss its original production start date next week.
The network had initially planned to kick off the fifth season of “Glee” on Sept. 19, before Fox’s postseason Major League Baseball coverage turned the network’s prime-time schedule on its ear.
A Fox spokesman declined to comment.
Monteith, 31, who played high school football star turned glee club mainstay Finn Hudson, was very open about his history of drug abuse. He took a hiatus from the show in March to attend rehab.
Monteith had been expected to play a major role in the first two episodes of the series next fall. In an unusual step, both episodes were written before cast and crew took the summer off.
His character, Finn, had worked through a major story line last season, despite graduating from the show’s high school the year before.
By last spring, Finn had became a mentor to the glee club, but left after a falling-out with its coach, Mr. Shue (Matthew Morrison) .
In real life, Monteith had been out of rehab since April. He had visited the set of “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy’s HBO movie “The Normal Heart” just two weeks ago.
On June 28, Monteith, Michele and other “Glee” regulars posed for “Glee’s” season 5 promotional photos in Los Angeles.

I think that's also what killed Jim Morrison.

Nah, Jim Morrison died in the bathtub in France, so his lethal cocktail would have been champagne and Mr. Bubble.

This is sad news - very sad since I was looking forward to a new season of a show I've followed since the beginning. Too many kids doing drugs now - although at 31, you can't really call him a kid. Reports today said cause of death was herion (mispelled) and alcohol.
