Wow... like other sentiments expressed here he's gone too soon.

Re: Report: James Gandolfini DIES IN ITALY

Terrible news. And on the same day we lost Kim Thompson, who most people probably don't know, but he was a giant in the non-superhero comic book field. Two men whose work helped shape my tastes and who gave me so much entertainment over the years.

Rest in peace, James, and thanks for the Sopranos, for True Romance, for the 12 Angry Men remake, and for so many other great performances over the years.

I know a lot of people hate it, but I enjoyed him with Ben Affleck in Surviving Christmas.

This month alone I've seen him in Burt Wonderstone, Killing Them Softly, and Not Fade Away, all mediocre movies at best, but The Sopranos was and is my favorite TV show and this makes me very, very sad. RIP Mr. Gandolfini.

the heavy breathing was also a common note on the Sopranos too, especially the last few seasons

Stunned. I was very new to The Sopranos (watched the entire series for the first time last year) and he was absolutely tremendous as Tony. One of the most memorable television characters ever.

He will be missed.

What? Oh shit! Today I also found out the woman who ran the beloved, borderline magical, used book store I've been shopping at since I was 8 years old. That fills the order of 3 for me, I guess.

Crummy day.

Yeah, heard about Hannelore on Monday. Very sad!

And now James Gandolfini... Not a good week.

Re: Report: James Gandolfini DIES IN ITALY

To add some notes, like others I only got into and saw The Sopranos last year, but of course knew of Gandolfini and his work since the beginning. The Sopranos supplanted The Wire as my favorite show, in no small part due to his performance, and I frequently revisit key scenes from the series. Just a few weeks ago I made almond cookies from The Sopranos cookbook.

Here's a great bit with Gandolfini on SNL.

Re: Report: James Gandolfini DIES IN ITALY

If you looked at his most recent photos his face was horribly puffy. I wouldn't hazard a guess why outside of being overweight. All that finally matters is he was a fine actor who was taken from the world far too soon. RIP JG.

I was surprised he was only 51. I thought he was around 42-43 when Sopranos started.

Re: Report: James Gandolfini DIES IN ITALY

What's sad also is that he was on a "Boy's trip" with his son to celebrate his 8th grade graduation. His son was the one who found him keeled over the in the bathroom and called the hotel front desk to get help. He was alive when the paramedics got there, but died in full cardiac arrest at the hospital. His first wife flew out to get their son, and his second wife was at home with their 8-month old daughter.

Good point. Hard to believe that in that first episode of the series he was virtually still in his mid-30s.

Re: Report: James Gandolfini DIES IN ITALY

Never saw any of his work - yeah, I'm probably the only person on the planet - but I knew of him.

Went to look up what specific movies/shows he was in on Wikipedia, and saw that some asshat had vandalized the page:

Fuckers.

Same here. My in-laws have been re-watching from the beginning over the past couple months. I may start doing the same.

Also, Edie Falco provided a statement today.

http://www.people.com/people/article...710629,00.html
"I am shocked and devastated by Jim's passing," Falco says in a statement. "He was a man of tremendous depth and sensitivity, with a kindness and generosity beyond words. I consider myself very lucky to have spent 10 years as his close colleague."
...

"My heart goes out to his family," said Falco, "as those of us in his pretend one hold onto the memories of our intense and beautiful time together. The love between Tony and Carmela was one of the greatest I've ever known."

So he was only around 30 in True Romance? That seems crazy.

I had no idea he was into drugs, unless you're just talking about drinking too much.
