Re: I Just Started Watching "The Wire."
I've watched through the series twice. The first time was the original broadcasts, and the second was DVD marathon. I appreciated the second season a lot more as part of the DVD marathon. I think when it first aired it was a let down to not have all the season 1 drug guys involved and not continue immediately with that thread. It is an important part of the series though.

Re: I Just Started Watching "The Wire."
I liked season 2 the first time I watched it, but going through it the second time a couple of years ago I found a new appreciation for it. I really liked Frank and Ziggy (even if he is pretty annoying).
Choosing a favorite season would be like choosing which of my children (that I don't have) I like the most. Seasons 3 and 4 stand out the most but that's because I really like Bunny.

4, 1, 3, 2, 5 for me. It is just a phenomenal series and I appreciate it more after every viewing. Toss-up between it and Mad Men as to my favorite show ever, though.
All the pieces matter.

I think season 2 is much better than 5, but it's all excellent television.

Just finished Season 5 and I am sad there is no more.
What a fucking brilliantly done series. I'm sorry it took me so long to finally watch the entire run.

I was turned on to this show via a comedy talk show I listen to; back in 2008 and 2009, a couple of the guys were hardcore into the show and they had a lot of the actors in for interviews and such. Of course, it took me five years to finally watch it, but here I am. Too bad that length of time didn't erase all of the spoilers I was exposed to via the talk show, but it doesn't even matter.

Re: I Just Started Watching "The Wire."
I'm currently 2 episodes from the end of Season 4.
I like Season 4 the best because of the school angle. When you hear yahoos blabbering about how scores are down and teachers and schools suck, this of this season. That same scenario (to a lesser degree than inner city Baltimore) is effecting many urban school districts.
Thanks for using Spoiler tags. I clicked on stupidly and saw something I didn't want to see. My own fault.

I just finished S4 last night and I've got to say, it was the best of the series so far. There were many plot lines, and each one progressed naturally to the point where you felt invested in each one.
S1 was good, not great. S2 I hated. S3 felt like a retread of S1, albeit with slightly different outcomes. So, it was great to see S4 on a new track, with some familiar faces, firing on all cylinders. My favorite aspect to the show is that nothing is serialized. Characters can come and go at any moment. There's no "big baddie" that has to be dealt with before each season ends. And the way government deals with hot issues like crime and schooling is scary because you know things aren't much different in the real world.
Can't wait to start S5.

You have seen the best that the wire has to show by the time you finish season 4. You will of course watch season 5, but it just won't be as good as it was. Still one of my top shows ever though....

I'd suggest re-watching S2. I think you're opinion will change after a 2nd viewing.

Ziggy and I need more time apart before I can consider reconciling that relationship. He's easily one of the most annoying characters ever committed to the small screen.

Yeah but now that you've finished the season you know a big part of why he is like he is. That will make you look at everybody in that family differently on the next viewing.

) , in that he was this "larger than life" figure, who gets taken out in a simple way (playing cards, buying Honey Nut) by someone who he wouldn't consider a threat at all. Kenard (the boy who killed Omar) was even pretending to be Omar in a previous episode.
