re: Sense8 (Netflix) - from Wachowskis & J. Michael Straczynski - Season 1 Thread
It was a chore just to get through the pilot. We didn't really spend enough time with any one to get to know any of them. From what we did see I didnt think any of the characters were particularly interesting. Instead of trying to introduce the audience to every character at once they should have spread it out over 2 episode so we could actually get to know the characters.
I''ll give it a few more episodes but if it doesn't pick up I'm gonna bail.

I was one of the episode 1 "God this is slow...not sure if I want to continue this" people. On ep 7 and it's been an interesting slow burn: curious where this is going and will stick it through to the end of the season.
However, I do wish they made the Nomi/Amanita relationship less like a pair of lovestruck teenagers. The "I Love You", "No, I Love You" decrees in every...other...scene is getting rather repetitive and eye rolling. Loving relationships can be subtle, can't they? It seems like they've been together awhile - how about a knowing nod or hand squeeze instead of these juvenile proclamations? (apologies, it could be the nature of marathoning the series, but this dialog part of the show has been SO annoying...)

I wouldn't go as far as calling it a masterpiece but it's interesting as far as sci-fi goes I guess. There's better stuff out there though on regular TV. It's not nearly as good as the stellar 12 Monkeys, and that pretty much came out of nowhere. But this is decent enough.

Just finished the 4th episode... the first 3 were somewhat slow, with little explanation of what's going on outside of just spending time with each individual and their lives. I don't think any of the characters alone have been particularly compelling, with Nomi being the most interesting and unique but all of them at least having a little bit of charm and conflict to keep me interested.
The 4th episode felt like things were finally coming together with a little bit of an explanation... which sold me to stick through this until the end and see how it plays out.

Halfway through Episode 2 and I think I have to bail. It doesn't seem like its worth the investment in time. Although the Indian chick is friggin gorgeous.

I finished the show yesterday and it was great. I hope they make a season 2. Erendira Ibarra who played Daniella is smoking hot.

My wife and I finished the whole season and we're glad we did. We're looking forward to season 2. I could easily watch 22 episodes of this show per year.
Reading a comment on IMDB I came across, "When I saw the trailers for Sense8, I was ready for a fast-paced action sci-fi." I didn't see those trailers, but it's definitely not that. It looks like I benefitted from not seeing the trailers. To me, it's more a character story with 8 main characters and what ties them together is an element of science fiction (bordering on something else).
Personally, I'm looking forward to the next season of this show more than I am the next season of House of Cards. That is, if there turns out to be a Season 2. It just dropped and Netflix has made no announcements yet. I could see the barrier to entry being kind of high for a lot of people. It's not LED displays and blue lights Sci-Fi. It's definitely not family friendly. It has unorthodox sex scenes. My RSS feeds have only shown 1 article about it so far and that was basically, "Are you going to stick with it?" as opposed to something like, "The best new Sci-Fi show of the year." We'll see. The thing about something like Netflix is they'll know exactly how many paying customers watch it.
For me, why she's doing what she's doing is as important as what she's doing; She's watching 2 gay guys make out. That whole ... 3-way isn't something you see everyday -- or at least I don't.

Netflix takes their time to renew shows that aren't a little off the beaten path.
They knew for sure they had an audience with House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, this is a tad different. But I figure if Bloodlines could get a renew then so can this.

Someone said, "slow burn".... that's something JMS does pretty damned well IMO, slowly build up the story threads without you really realizing he's doing it, then suddenly yank on several at once to watch all the characters react and interact.
Even Babylon 5, which is just about as mainstream Sci-Fi as there is, was essentially a character-driven story.

Some friends at work raved about the rest of the season, so i'm definitely sticking it out after the excellent 4th episode. I do think the show could have gotten things going an episode earlier - all the reviews that were out early were just for the first 3, and I don't blame the negative response given those 3. Just not enough happens early on to hook people.

I haven't started it yet. So...it sounds like if I don't bail before the 4th ep. the payoff is worth it.

I watched the first episode. It got progressively more interesting as it went on. I watched some of episode 2, but fell asleep.
I was reading some background on the show and it looks like they plan on 5 seasons, and they have everything mapped out already. It seems ambitious. I wonder how long before Netflix decides on a renewal.

Finished the season. The final episode was intense as hell. I did have some minor issues with some stuff, but whatever, it was still fantastic.

I just finished episode 4 and am digging it as well. I kind of like that they build the characters before you really realize what's going on. It seems Netflix can get away with this better than traditional TV. I'm not sure I would have stuck it out if it had taken me a month to get to episode 4.

Up to episode 9. I still dig it, and while the pace has picked up a little bit since the 4th episode, it still moves fairly slow spending a lot of time building each character. Part of me wishes they picked it up a little bit more as far as the greater story that connects them opposed to still concentrating a lot on their individual developments, but then I'd also hate to miss out on how sweet it's been when they connect and interact.

And finished last night. Kind of an interesting series, it felt really different in the way it took so much time with each character and even the finale felt like it never got in as deep as I thought it would regarding what they are and the company tracking them. Even when it picks up steam the show is still very much about the individuals and their stories and personal conflicts opposed to the greater plot that links them together. It's unique and probably not for everyone, but after getting to know each character it worked extremely well rather then just a basic good vs evil type of plot, even though I kind of wish the season was longer and we got more resolution for each character.
I'm still not sure I understand and might have missed this ...
Anyway, bring on another season... or 5.

Slow burn is definitely the right way to describe this. I wouldn't call it great, but I can't call it bad either. Ultimately I will watch all of it and I'm glad Netflix is pursuing all sorts of original content.

Finished this last night, and I really enjoyed it. I didn't have any expectations going in, which helped. The action did ramp up in the last couple of episodes.
I was confused at first but once I got a good handle on the characters and got used to the quick switching between characters' lives, I was hooked.
What sort of bothers me is that knowing how to do something and physically doing it are two different things. For example, Sun trained for many years to be the martial arts badass she is. Capheus didn't. Just because she is suddenly in his head with all of her knowledge and experience doesn't mean that his body will be able to do what hers does. I can suspend my disbelief on this, though.

@Bandoman... regarding your spoiler question (which you spoilered only because it refers to episodes some people may not have seen yet), I suspect Whisper would have much more control than someone who is new to the whole thing and doesn't really understand it at all. But then, that doesn't really address Jonas and mama Sense8, both of whom are more experienced. At this point, I consider it an unknown, not a plot hole. We have no idea how old Whisper is -- or how powerful. I did have the same question while watching.
I also typically tend to agree with you about learning not equal doing. For instance, if someone could jack me into a matrix and teach me how to lift weights, it's not going to make me be able to bench press 600 lbs. My physical body has to build up to that, which is what you're referring to. It's the same problem I have with Root on Person of Interest. Things like reflexes come into play. That said, I could also buy this one (at least for now) because it's reasonable that the people Sun was sharing with are already physically at least average or above, and what they lacked was the knowledge and/or confidence to do some of the physical things they were doing. Fighting often isn't about being superhumanly stronger than the person you're fighting. It's sometimes about being wiling to throw a punch with all your might and trying to push the other person's nose bone into their brain. Most of us have psychological governors to such behavior. Knowledge/Skill is as much a part of it as the physical aspect.
Obviously there's an element of artistic license and fiction to the whole thing, but at the end of the day, I was able to accept it just like I accept Warp drive or a Matrix -- it's part of the story universe.

Mikah - I agree that Whisper is more experience and didn't view the issue as a plot hole as much as something to look forward to next season.
Also, I agree with you that the whole group are young, generally fit people so it's not as much of a stretch to have them share skills. It was just something that jumped out at me at first, but I can certainly get past it.
