Re: Penny Dreadful -- New Showtime Series -- "Night Work" -- 5/11/14

Finished watching the second episode, and wow! After that ending, I'm officially hooked. They took that in a completely different direction than I was expecting.

I'm liking the Egyptian angle mainly because it's a completely different take on the vampire mythology. I'm a little undecided on Dorian Gray, but we'll see how he fits in to things. Promising show, and that no CGI mandate is pretty cool.

I just finished watching the second episode. I liked this episode and those seance scenes were creepy.

Still a little slow moving but building up several story lines.

Spoiler:
Possessed Eva Green, wow

The Frankenstein story line was going good I thought, and then the wow at the end, damn!

Not too interested in the Dorian Gray thing yet.

Spoiler:
I'm thinking they are setting up the Dorian Gray storyline as a slow burn type thing.

Was it as hard for everyone else to understand what the hell Billie Piper was saying as it was for me?

Yep but the last two minutes caught me completely off guard...more characters in the mix and each a puzzle of their own that's part of a larger puzzle itself. The good Doctor looks like he'll play a bigger role and Eva Green is flat out awesome. The round table event just was ..WOW!

Yeah that accent on Bad Wolf was hard to understand. That Mortal Kombat fatality ending was pretty good.

Holy shit that ending. Wow

Eva Green's scenes were awesome. The possession scenes were fantastic. Love when she curses like a sailor.

Not feeling Dorian Gray's plot yet.

Did Mr. Proteus remind anyone else of a smart Karl Pilkington?

Re: Penny Dreadful -- "Seance" -- 5/18/14

Caught up on the first two episodes. The first was ok, but I've seen so many "heroes band together to fight vampires" stories ... just setting things in Victorian England wasn't enough to keep me interested. But the second episode expands the scope (hardly mentioning vampires): we got a continuation of Frankenstein's experiments and creatures, a creepy seance, Dorian Gray, Egyptian mythology and hints of world-destroying demons. I feel like the characters have been fleshed out nicely in the second episode as well. So I'll certainly be giving it the remaining 6 episodes of the season.

Yes, I had a great deal of trouble following Billie Piper's accent. I'm usually pretty good at dealing with accents, too.

When I finish GoT, I plan on dropping HBO and picking up Showtime. What's on/coming up soon besides Penny Dreadful and Homeland? I saw the first ep of PD and it looked interesting.

Billie Piper looks dreadful.. no pun intended.

I recently got into Shameless and Masters of Sex. Both shows are pretty good.

Ray Donovan season 2 and Masters of Sex season 2 are airing this summer. You can watch past episodes via on demand to catch up.

And yes, there is also Shameless, House of Lies, Episodes, which air in the Spring. All those shows were renewed.

Re: Penny Dreadful -- "Resurrection" -- 5/25/14

Another good episode. I liked the "appearance" of Mina and the story told to Ethan. The actor playing Frankenstein's first creature was very good and a bit chilling.
Based on the previews for next week's episode, I guess
Spoiler:
that Brona might be a candidate for the creature's bride

Re: Penny Dreadful -- "Resurrection" -- 5/25/14

Is the gunslinger a werewolf or some kind of wolf tamer?

I can guess where the bride of Frankenstein story is going. Victor will make the first born a female companion. The companion will fall for The Doctor and go on space time adventures.

Could have done without the endless emo Frankenstein monster narrative.

I liked the monster's story. It ran a little long, but it was entertaining and I love the poetic way he talks.

My guess is that Ethan is a werewolf although there hasn't been anything to suggest that before this episode was there?

I don't think there has been anything to suggest Ethan being a werewolf in the first two episodes. If he does turn out to be one, I can see some kind of twist in which Vanessa and/or Sir Malcolm knew before they went to recruit him.

Not as such. There was that bit of him waking up outside by the docks, blacked out. I figured it was gonna be either Wolfman or Jekyll/Hyde.
