What made sense about the phone in the comics was that no one fucking knew about it, because who would follow a guy who was clearly insane? If I was Hershel, I would've told everyone as soon as I got back that Rick may have lost his damn mind. Any sane person would.

Comic spoilers below:

Spoiler:
It wasn't much longer in the comics, was it? An issue ended with the phone call, the next issue was the back and forth, ending with the realization it was Lori, and the next issue it was wrapped up, with Rick keeping the phone in case he wanted to talk to her again.

I don't think this felt crammed, if anything if it lasted longer than an episode it would have felt drawn out. Just like no one would want a Tony Soprano dream episode to span several episodes.

He was toast as soon as Michone showed up.

I guess it's been awhile for you? It lasted much longer, and was never really resolved.

Spoiler:
It continued on and off, infrequently, until Rick just sort of admitted to Michonne that he talked to his dead wife on the phone (I forget if she caught him or he just wanted to get it off his chest), and she admitted that she used to talk to her dead Zombie pals (brother? husband? I forget the relationship.) and that he shouldn't worry about it. In either case, it began shortly after Woodbury and Michonne didn't speak to him about it until they reached the Alexandria Safe-zone, so it lasted much longer.

Sorry, I guess what I meant is that the comic didn't draw it out that Rick was talking to dead people that he knew.

Spoiler:
We don't know yet if Rick won't keep/return to the phone for occasional chats on the show.

If they'd left it as Herschel not going down there, I guess it could end up playing as some kind of cathartic release for Rick. I mean, we're not going to see him praying or talking to a therapist, but just because he's imagining that there's someone to talk to doesn't make him crazy. Haven't we all talked something through to ourselves before?

That Herschel DID talk to him, though, and DID notice there was no dial tone and then offered to sit with Rick, I think we can be pretty sure that Herschel thinks Rick has lost his mind, too.

decent episode, but the weakest of the season by far. the phone thing was beyond lame.

It's ridiculous how good The Wire is. It's almost ruined all other shows for me :p.

Basic cable nekkidness! We can show knives and screwdrivers jammed through heads, a gunshot to the face, and disembowelment, but not bewbs.

Not to self: violent gladiatorial games make women horny. I always wondered why there wasn't a little more sex in the zombie apocalypse, that'd certainly be on my mind if I was afraid every day would be my last and I was under the threat of cannibalistic death constantly :p.

And Glen, why didn't you just shoot Merle on sight?

He's no Rick or Shane. And he understands that Daryl would want to know. But if Merle took my woman like that, I'm not hesitating to shoot him in the head. And by now, we've seen Glenn (and Carl) become marksmen that a head shot from that range is money.

I wouldn't take the chance with the gun to Maggie's head. Merle might pull the trigger as a reflex if you shot him in the head.

I thought it was good stuff. I've only read up through book 2 of the comics so I wasn't expecting the phone thing. Kinda strange, but it didn't bother me that much.

Nice that Daryl found Carol. I also liked him telling his story about his mom burning up to comfort Carl, and Carl's just like "yeah, I had to shoot my mom in the face". Well played, Carl.

Things are definitely heating up. Can't wait until next week!

 Soon people will be complaining that mentioning that the comic had zombies in it will be spoiler. Then it will be an inevitable count-down to the comics merely existing will somehow be considered a spoiler.

As for the comic matching up to the show, I'm curious what percentage you guys think the two are at now? I think it is hovering around the 15% mark on key events and people.

i was kinda zoning in and out...who was on the phone?
Spoiler:
it was Laurie and the rest of the gang in his mind or something?

Good episode. I guess if the phone is too unrealistic, they should have done Rick calling Morgan on the walkie-talkie. They should bring back Morgan or at least his voice since he also lost his wife for Rick to talk with.

I find it a bit unrealistic that Lori, Amy, Jim, and the others are still alive and holed up somewhere. Hopefully they can explain that through flashbacks or something.

[spoiler]They're all safe in the "Others" side of the prison. I can't wait until Ben gets introduced, he's my favorite character! /spoiler]

That they're all still alive doesn't bother me. It's that they found Rick by dialing random numbers. What are the odds, like 7-to-1?
