This is in my top five favorite shows of all time. I began watching the show once again on the HUB. Even though 20 years has gone by, certain scenes and episodes still give me goose bumps.

If you're a fan of the show, then this book is a must. I own it, and it is worth the $20 it's listed on Amazon for.

Wow, I remember watching this in the afternoons in the common room of the dorms after classes. I haven't watched in a few years, but even out of my college days it was still a damn fine show.

Wish WHV would release bargain versions of the season sets, I rarely find them used and they still command a premium price.

Wish it was available in hardcover but I'm going to pick a copy up.

Also, if you're a fan: the show's "bible" was made available some years ago, with all kinds of interesting notes and info.

I never was that crazy about Timm's look for this show, but that segment (Along with Clayface's haywire transformations at the end of "Feat of Clay") were definetly among greatest pieces of animation I had ever seen up untill that point.

Honorable mention should also go to the series' score. I still have never heard any badass honkytonk music that contends with "The Forgotten".

I don't think that 20 dollars is a premium price. Now, the original BCI He-man sets are a premium price. I got 3 of the sets for about 15 bucks each. But season 2 volume 1 can't be found new for less than 70 dollars. She-ra season 2 is over 200 dollars !

One of the other things that was marvelous about this show was the inspired voice casting. Sometimes with surprising results. Like:

I want to add my voice to the chorus praising that book. A lot of books like this can feel pretty shallow, but Batman Animated has a surprising amount of substance packed within it.

BTAS really is a remarkable show. It transcended just being a cartoon, and is definitely a definitive take on the Dark Knight. It was the first show that really made me take notice of voice actors, because even to my young mind I noticed a difference in the nuance of the character on BTAS compared to other cartoons of the day. I think the most impressive legacy of BTAS is that it was strong enough to launch the DCAU which ran off and on for 15 years or so. The shows comprising the DCAU are ones that I will probably watch through multiple times in my life. It will be fun to do that with my kids if I ever have any.

Re: Happy 20th Anniversary, Batman the Animated Series!

This thread got me to go back and start rewatching the show again. I'm up to the second disc of volume one so far and it's been just as great as ever. Not that it really surprises me but this show just holds up so much better than any cartoon series from my childhood has. Not just in a nostalgic way either, it really is just fantastically written/acted/animated and holds the test of time amazingly well.

I forgot another early episode that I've always liked, The Forgotten where Bruce is investigating the disappearances of homeless people and winds up losing his memory and trapped in some sort of slave camp.

I love this show. I remember coming home from school and sitting in front of the TV and enjoying the hell out of the show.

I was really excited to watch them again with my 5-year-old. I was surprised at how many of the beats of the show I remembered in certain episodes. I only have the first volume and will eventually get the rest.

I know there are 4 volumes but only the first three are the original series correct?

Same here, thinking I might be able to start watching a few episodes with my 5 year old (who is obsessed with Batman currently) in the next few months. At the very least, it will give me the opportunity to "preview" a bunch of the episodes to make sure they're age appropriate.

The first three volumes cover the original run of Batman: The Animated Series from 1992-1995. The fourth volume is The New Batman Adventures which aired a couple years after The Animated Series ended. It's basically the same series with some minor changes and a revamped animation style. It still is a good series though and has it's share of memorable episodes.

Awesome as always. Really love what Shirley Walker did with the music for this series.

Gotcha, thanks. I'll probably end up getting the fourth one. I don't recall ever seeing any of the New Batman adventures. If it looked the same I may not have known.

Re: Happy 20th Anniversary, Batman the Animated Series!

It looked a little different. Most of the characters' looks were changed a bit. Batman, for instance, got a little more severe looking. His ears were a bit longer and he looked liked he did in Justice League. One of the villians, Baby Doll, got a touch more angular. All in all, the animation style wasn't nearly as good as the original animated series.

Re: Happy 20th Anniversary, Batman the Animated Series!

You can say what you want about the designs themselves or the change in tone but the animation itself was a lot better on the WB eps. You're far more likely to find off-model characters, animation errors, wonky sequences from 2nd-rate animation sequences etc. in the earlier Fox episodes.

The Joker is really the only universally-hater TNBA design and even then the only problem was his lack of red lips and once they tweaked that back in Justice League and BBROTJ it was all good. Scarecrow went from ridiculous to legitimately frightening and most of the other changes were so slight that only a psycho would object to them.

Re: Happy 20th Anniversary, Batman the Animated Series!

I dunno some the redesigns I was kind of meh on but they didn't bother me so much that they detracted from my enjoyment of the episodes. I particularly didn't care for Catwoman as she just looked too cartoony to me. Killer Croc bothered me too because he looked way different than he did compared to Batman: The Animated Series. The Riddler and The Joker had minor issues that bothered me but overall I didn't mind their redesigns. I didn't like that they took off Riddler's eye mask and the only issue I really had with The Joker is that they took away his signature red lips which seemed odd. I also wasn't fond of Bane's new mask (especially with the weird spiked neck collar ). I liked the Scarecrow's new design but I never really had a problem with his original look either.

Re: Happy 20th Anniversary, Batman the Animated Series!

So I wasn't really sure where to post this but this thread seemed appropriate, for fans of the series DC Collectibles announced today that they're starting a line of six inch figures from Batman: The Animated Series/The New Adventures of Batman. Wave one is scheduled to release in November and includes Catwoman from Batman: The Animated Series as well as Batman, Mr. Freeze, and Two-Face from The New Adventures of Batman. I love the show and like collecting figures so I'm pretty stoked about this news. Figured some of you guys might be interested.

Re: Happy 20th Anniversary, Batman the Animated Series!

I had thought a line of action figures was already made for the series, many years ago. I would fully support Timm taking B:TAS and re-animating the series with modern tools. The original animation is never going to look much better than garbage in HD, but such a beloved series like this one could easily have its entire animation re-done up to modern standards. Keep the same voice performances and everything, changing nothing but the animation.

I really wonder why Warner hasn't considered it.

There was a line of basic action figures back in the day made by Kenner (I still have a bunch of them around someplace) but they were aimed more at kids. DC Collectibles is a bit higher end of an action figure manufacturer and target more of an adult collector. They go for more detail and have decent articulation (which the old figures didn't have much of). I just though it was cool that they're re-visiting the series and giving us new figures.

Re: Happy 20th Anniversary, Batman the Animated Series!

Yeah, Mike these are cool as shit aren't they? I don't really do the figures thing anymore, but I do like these. I want them, but I'm a little leery in going down this road. They're going to be $25 a figure, and depending on how widespread the line is, this could get incredibly expensive very fast. I don't have to stretch to think of $1000 worth of figures.

Maybe I can just pick and choose.
