Firefly Tenth anniversary 20 September 2002-12

I've been rewatching Buffy and Angel and had just gotten up to season 7 and 4 when I realized that it had been awhile since I had last watched Firefly which had come out at the same time.
After watching the first disc of Firefly I noticed the airdate for Train Job was 9/20/02, almost ten years ago. I also noticed that the 2.0 sound wasn't that great on the dvd, I really should upgrade to the blu ray.
Anyone rewatch this latly or are planning on to?

Watch the pilot on the 20th and then the next episode the following Thursday and so on, and just bump this thread with thoughts after each viewing?

Also delay watching an episode a week or switch the days up randomly that you do watch them to get the original broadcast experience. Oh and skip one or two and watch them out of order.

When networks make rediculously boneheaded decisions to air episodes out of order, what reasoning do they have to do it? They have to have SOME reason, but what the fuck could it be?

I can't speak for Firefly but my understanding is that networks will move episodes around if they feel the order they set is better than the one set by the producers. They did this last season with the last three episodes of Community and it worked out better the way NBC set it compared to the producers.

I can understand that for a show like Community which has a limited need for continuity. Firefly was written as an arc and showing it out of order made some episodes refencing things that had not happened due to the out of sequence showing. I think some suits just like to dabble for the hell of it.

Anyone thinking of rewatching Firefly in the order it was aired to mark the anniversary?

For Firefly, the network execs notoriously didn't like the original pilot, which partially explains why they went with the 2nd episode, which also was written as a "second pilot". It also allowed FOX to premiere two shows on the same night, since the pilot was two hours long and would've taken a whole night to itself.

For some of the other reschedules, I remember that FOX heavily promoted "Our Mrs. Reynolds" as being written by Joss Whedon in the weekly ad, so they likely moved that one up for the name recognition (trying to get viewers in early). It also explains why "Objects in Space" was moved up in order (last ditch attempt to get viewers). I also thought I learned somewhere that some of the episodes that the network thought lighter and funnier were front-ended as well, such as "Jaynestown" and "Our Mrs. Reynolds".

By the time the pilot was finally aired (last!), I think the decision to cancel the show had already gone down, and it was basically aired at a time when many other shows had already started their Christmas break.

Watching it when it originally aired, I think the show suffered mainly due to not airing the pilot first. The other shifts didn't affect continuity that much.

Whenever my wife and I rewatch the series (which is lately about twice a year), we always skip over "Out of Gas" and watch it after "Objects in Space". The latter is a good episode, but the former is a great one.

Saving the best for last?

I think "Out of Gas" is hands-down the best episode of the show, but I always watch it in the DVD order. It helps now that "Objects in Space" isn't the last we see of Serenity.

I love Out of Gas. It has one of my favorite lines in the series.

You would've done the same.
We can already see I haven't.

In some ways, I like how this series turned out.

It doesn't wear out its welcome, never had a bad episode, and you can reasonably marathon the show and Serenity over a weekend.

For folks who like the fun elements of this show and want a longer ride that hits a lot of the same notes, I recommend Farscape.

Just rewatched the series earlier this year. Leaves me wanting more every time.

Re: Firefly Tenth anniversary 20 September 2002-12

Serenity was the first blu-ray that I bought and I immediately bought Firefly when it came out. It is my favorite series and I saw the film in theaters several times but sadly I didn't watch the show when it was on. I thought Buffy lookes stupid (I was an idiot) so I never gave it a chance until I saw the last three episodes of season 6 in repeats and I was hooked so I tracked down of Whedon's work and it has been an obsession ever since. I can't believe it is 10 year either. I think I might watch Our Mrs. Reynolds and Trash tonight. Shindig is still my favorite episode.

I saw a meme the other day that said something to the effect of: "Firefly, 13 hours of TV, a lifetime of withdrawal". That's kind of how I feel.

That said, they shot a 10th anniversary reunion thingy during Comic Con this year. I believe it's supposed to air sometime this fall. Don't know channel/date/time details yet.

I rewatched the series on Blu for the first time since seeing it on DVD when it came out. Still very enjoyable, but always sad when it ends because you think "what could have been". Still not a huge fan of the movie.

It's going to be sometime in November on the Science Channel. They've been airing commercials for it and Fringe recently.

There's a movie theater by me playing Serenity tomorrow. Proceeds go to charity.

Perusing this thread is prodding me into watching through the series again, which I did around Spring Break. Between my blurays, Netflix and Amazon Prime, there really is no excuse not to...

Re: Firefly Tenth anniversary 20 September 2002-12

I just watched the whole series on Blu-ray over the last 2 weeks. Before I had only watched a few episodes on DVD years and years ago at friends places, so it was new watching the episodes in order. I'll never understand the crazy fandom that sprouts up over stuff like this, but definitely very entertaining with well written characters. I need to go watch Serenity, which I haven't seen since theaters.

I didn't know about the series till years after it aired. Now, it's one of my favorites, and I've watched each of the episodes at least a couple times (some like Shindig, many times). Still don't get the boneheaded decisions of the network.

I watched it and really enjoyed it. That cast has a very special chemistry.

They also give up a huge secret to Inara's backstory.

Spoiler:
Inara was dying. Holy Crap!!
