The words that Spottedfeather perhaps was looking for are protagonist and antagonist. However, nobody argued that the series didn't have those.

LOTR has a clear good vs evil dichotomy. The good guys do almost exclusively good, and the evil comes from Sauron, who does zero good and may as well be the devil, or people corrupted in some way by Sauron, sometimes via the ring or the seeing orbs.

In GoT, the division isn't as clear cut. There's different sides, with people opposed to each other, but one side isn't the clearly good side doing only good while the other side does only evil. That's the point msdmoney was making.

Because you're the only person who said so many things that simply don't make sense. Or are taken to such extremes that people no longer understand what your opinion actually is.

If I said I didn't like Breaking Bad because there were no good actors in it...well, i guess that's my opinion but I shouldn't be surprised when absolutely no one agrees with me.

Even though the arts are subjective, there is a point where you have to realize that certain movies/TV shows/books/music/actors are at the top, even if they aren't for you.

I don't like The Beatles but I'd never go into a music forum, say they were awful in every way and expect anyone to agree. I could walk into a museum and say my kid is a better artist than Rembrandt or Picasso, but that doesn't make it close to true. An extreme opinion, different from everyone else's and with nothing to back it up is bound to stir up some discussion.

Re: Why aren't you watching (Insert show and reason)?

We gave up cable several years ago, so we don't watch anything (on TV) that might have been cable-oriented. We also don't watch shows on network television (except for the local news at 6pm) because we can't stand the distraction/angst that the ignorance of advertising presents for us (TV on DVD has spoiled us in that regard). So, listing TV shows we don't watch and why becomes moot. Current TV shows we DO watch (because they interest us) that I've purchased on DVD are:

Fringe: because we like it
Supernatural: because we like it
The Walking Dead: because we like it
NCIS: because we like it

As soon as Game of Thrones gets cheap, I'll probably pick that up because it looks interesting.

Couple of current TV shows I might be interested in seeing are Grimm and Once Upon a Time. Other than that, I don't think there are any current shows on TV or cable that would interest us enough to justify resubscribing to cable or blind-buying the DVDs/Blu-rays. We don't care for sitcoms, dramedies, reality shows, or the plethora or lawyer/cop shows (besides NCIS) that have saturated television. For those of you who might criticize our choice of shows to (or not to) watch, hey, it's a personal choice. You can watch whatever you want to watch and so will we. -kd5-

Re: Why aren't you watching (Insert show and reason)?

I fully admit that I simply don't give myself enough time for TV. I watch a handful of shows, and I like it that way.

That said...

Strike Back (Cinemax) - never heard of it
Once Upon a Time (ABC) - Wife raved about it. I watched one episode.
Revenge (ABC) - Wife is currently raving about it. I'm not very interested
The Good Wife (CBS) - No interest.
2 Broke Girls (CBS) - Saw bits and pieces. Not very funny.
Castle (ABC) - I watched a few episodes of Season one, and thought it was great. I'll get back to it eventually.
Happy Endings (ABC) - no interest.
New Girl (FOX) - I love Zooey, but meh. Not funny enough.
Parenthood (NBC) - Watched all of Season 2. Kind of got over it, I guess.
Modern Family (ABC) - I WILL catch up on this. Avoided it because it originally seemed like another Arrested Development rip-off.
Glee (FOX) - Went from fantastic to pathetic.
Suburgatory (ABC) - No reason. Just never gave it a shot yet.
Person of Interest (CBS) - Will get to it eventually.
The Vampire Diaries (CW) - I'm not a teenage girl.
Parks and Recreation (NBC) - Love it.
30 Rock (NBC) - watched a handful of episodes. Not as great as everyone thinks.
The Office (NBC) - lost interest a few years ago.
Fringe (FOX) - WILL catch up. Still on season one.
Community (NBC) - Love it, but cautious about Season 4.
Grimm (NBC) - no interest
Nikita (CW) - no interest
Homeland (Showtime) - no interest
Game of Thrones (HBO) - didn't get anything out of the pilot.
Girls (HBO) - I know nothing about it.
Dexter (Showtime) - previous season wasn't great...
Episodes (Showtime) - I know nothing about it.
Spartacus (Starz) - no interest.
Justified (FX) - no interest.
Sons of Anarchy (FX) - LOVED the pilot. Agreed to watch it with wife. Haven't gotten to it yet.
Covert Affairs (USA) - I know nothing about it.
White Collar (USA) - Liked the pilot a lot. Wife wants to watch it too. Haven't gotten to it.
Burn Notice (USA) - no interest
Suits (USA) - I know nothing about it.
Boardwalk Empire (HBO) - Didn't think much of the pilot
The Newsroom (HBO) - Love it.
Veep (HBO) - no idea what this is.
The Walking Dead (AMC) - Really like it, so I'm watching.
Breaking Bad (AMC) - Best show out there right now.
American Horror Story (FX) - No interest.
Hawaii Five-O (CBS) - No interest.
Louie (FX) - Watched S1 and S2 on Netflix. Will do the same for S3.
Boss (Starz) - No idea what this is.
NCIS (CBS) the girl bothers me. Don't know why.
Mad Men (AMC) - Watching season 1. Still not loving it.
Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family) - Again, I am not a teenage girl.

Here's some reasons you can choose:
D'oh! Didn't see those until I wrote my answers. Sorry.

Re: Why aren't you watching (Insert show and reason)?

Characters on The Vampire Diaries spend most of their time trying to stop something from killing family members, significant others and/or everyone in town.

What does that have to do with being a teenage girl? Do people really not look beyond the title before deciding what a show is about? It's infuriating. Yes, the first few episodes were about a high school girl and her new boyfriend. That took a major u-turn at about episode 4 and hasn't stopped since.

While undoubtedly true, and acknowledging that this is a discussion forum after all, I'd just chip in here to ask for everyone to try and "play nice"... many of you do, and I'm not singling out anyone, but we should recognise that some folk may be more or less eloquent than others and endeavour to take that into account and use IGNORE if the level of debate is not what you'd like to see.

Re: Why aren't you watching (Insert show and reason)?

Of all these I only watch Castle and The Good Wife. That's too much to quote and scroll around in so in a nut shell:

I only have Showtime and rarely watch anything but movies. Don't get the CW with Dish. Don't watch Comedy. Would rather watch shows like SYTYCD, The Mentalist, Grey's Anatomy, Top Shot, Fairly Legal, Falling Skies, Rizzoli & Isles, The Glades, Haven, Bones, Army Wives, Rookie Blue, Drop Dead Diva, Body of Proof, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, CSI (Not the original), Necessary Roughness. I even watch Swamp People and Lizard Lick Towing when I remember to. Of course, Ice Road Truckers and Deadliest Catch are DVR'd.

Will watch Person of Interest if nothing else is on. Have seen Suits, but its on when something else is on, Biggest Loser is usually on when NCIS is on. I usually watch the reruns on USA, but changed to watching JAG reruns on AXS. Plus, McGee's "new" voice - is different. Have seen Covert Affairs.

The Vampire Diaries is the only show currently on the CW that deserves a better network. It's gone far beyond the poor teen standards of the CW. It probably has the tightest plotting of any network show today. There are still some elements with direct nods to its intended teen female demo, but that can largely be overlooked.

Just a friendly reminder, you can disagree with people, but don't make it personal and don't devolve the thread into bickering.

Please refrain from name-calling. Don't call someone a troll, just because they share a different opinion.

Agreed. And I'd argue those elements are basic "will they or won't they?" stuff that's on all kinds of shows. Nothing terribly specific to teens about it, especially as the characters have gotten older.

Plus, it doesn't hurt that the women are crazy hot.

relax man. My comment was made in jest.

As mentioned at the beginning of my post, I just simply don't watch a lot of new TV right now. Something like VD is so far removed from my interest, even though I know the premise well enough (my wife may or may not be a fan. She was pretty dedicated to the show at first, but hasn't watched the latest season, even though all the episodes are taking up room on my DVR) I really didn't think anyone would take my "teenage girl" comment too seriously.

Since this thread has a ton of action, this is a good thread for me to recommend Strike Back to everyone. Seriously, check it out.

I only wish it was that easy. I've noticed that most people in this forum (who don't pirate shows) only subscribe to HBO or Showtime for their premium channel needs. I think one of the posters in this thread earlier said he bought the Strike Back BD and loves it, but doesn't think it's worth the money to subscribe to Cinemax.
