I watched live for the first time this week. If the week long wait wasn't bad enough, the commercials were excruciating.

The way I understood it was that he was, at least partly, electrocuting himself. Hence the burning on his arm.

But a North American household current is 120V, so even getting the full dose won't usually kill an adult. It's not very pleasant to feel though. Transmission wires are at least 240V, and thus much more dangerous.

Re: Breaking Bad -- "Buyout" -- 8/19/12

The 'voltage' is 120v. Current is measured in amps, not volts. With enough current, 120v can easily kill you. A typical 15amp household circuit is more than capable of that if the current passes across your body. I've actually had a shock from a 10kv transformer, but it was just across one hand. It stood me up pretty quickly, but really just burnt my finger a bit.

Electricity is transmitted at much higher voltages than 240v, typically in the 10s to 100s of thousand of volts. It only gets stepped down by local transformers.

I have a feeling that you can't get 120v to arc like Walt did, however. I suspect that if you got the wires close enough to arc, they'd probably just short and trip the breaker/blow the fuse. Even with the above mentioned 10k transformer, I seem to remember that I could only get about a 1-2" arc.

I have done this life-hack as well from time to time. It fully depends on if I have something to entertain me for 15 minutes or so at 10 o'clock on Sunday night.

Re: Breaking Bad -- "Buyout" -- 8/19/12

Like most people, I'm really disliking what Walt's turned into. But I love that I do. It seems like it's all part of Vince Gilligan's plan. First he got us to sympathize with him. Then he got us to root for him. Now, we're starting to root against him. And for the *same reasons* that we rooted for him. BRILLIANT.

Here's my take on where this story is headed. Walt is consumed by his missing out on Gray Matter and loosing his ex-girlfriend to his former friend. Remember that he got started on this journey because faced with his mortality, he realized how much of his potential he missed because he always played it safe. I think we're going to see him achieve his "empire" and make more than he ever would have with Gray Matter. But there's going to be a price to be paid. I can't decide whether that's going to come from Skylar, Walt Jr, Hank, or Jesse.

Season 5 Walt is egotistical to the point of being sloppy.
I concur, but thats exactly what I dont like.
Walt getting egotistical is fine, but him getting sloppy is not. Its out of character. Look at the elaborate way in which he manipulated Jesse just a few days back (in the story timeline) in S4. From that, he becomes so sloppy as to whistle in front of him? When Jesse is the ONE guy who he can count on? Even egotistical emperors dont make that mistake.

Silly, he only has enough methymine to make $200,000,000 in blue meth.

As far as him joining up with the Arizona cartel... Walt isn't in the job market, he's in the EMPIRE market.

That wont be enough for him at this point. He would want to be bigger than Gray Matter.

Personally, I find that it fits. Walt's always been pretty emotionally tone-deaf around others. Other such examples that spring to mind are his "Which one is that?" when referring to Combo right after Jesse told him he was killed, and him relentlessly questioning Jesse about the particulars of Gale's murder, when it was blatantly obvious that Jesse was doing all he could to forget about it.

I'm not saying she deserves empathy, but the hate for her being a hypocrite is seems a little overstated when compared to the "meh" reactions for Walt's irredeemable actions over the course of the show.

I think the wives are often written in these shows to ground the protagonists. But the viewers just see an obstacle to the main character.

Him being egotistical and almost comedically sloppy I think is the point. He thinks he's smarter than he is. He's a loose canon, but not a bad ass.

That was AWESOME. I want to see his reaction talking about it with Jay now. SO close. ($1700 for that desk?!) I wonder what he did with it?

He said it was too heavy to move and he ended up leaving it in a loft he had rented for a while.

Walt didn't whistle in front of Jesse. Watch the scene again. Walt thought Jess was gone and went into the tented area to continue cooking. Jesse happened to still be there - which Walt did not know - and heard him whistling on the other side of the tent. If Walt knew Jesse was still there, he would have kept up the facade that he was broken up over the kid's death.

The only reason Walt was whistling was because he thought he was alone and let down his guard.

I just became a Breaking Bad fan a few months ago and only saw this clip last week, but my God, that was one of the most surreal things I've ever seen. It was EXACTLY how Jesse would have reacted.

There's an interview somewhere (might have been the actual Tonight Show interview) about how he had a lot of Red Bulls that day and only behaved like that because he knew it was the only way he would get on stage (never be the first few or last few in line too.) And the look of horror during the showcase was legit. He was really upset.

Its funny to see how many people think they know a character better than the writers of the show.
