Boss - any good?

I was thinking of getting this on BD but...
I see that Grammer got a golden globe but the ratings don't appear great. I wondered at it even getting a second season. I don't see much talk about it at all. Can I get some input please?

Re: Boss - any good?

It was renewed pretty quickly for a second season...maybe even before the first episode aired. I've heard it's really good but haven't seen it yet. I'm also wondering if it's worth getting for $18 at Best Buy this week with a DVD trade-in. It was only 8 episodes though. I'm wondering if Amazon will have this for around $10 at any point around Black Friday.

One of my favorites last year. Grammar is extraordinary in this, and the penultimate episode will make your jaw drop. Very worthy of a purchase.

Re: Boss - any good?

I started all the Boss threads last Fall and yeah it didn't get alot of activity here. I think the main reason was that most people in this forum simply didn't have Starz.

Anyways, it was an awesome show. Kelsey Grammer was just dynamic in it. And yeah the 7th episode called "Stasis" is brilliant television. The show starts out a little slow, but stick with it. The payoff is so good. Good performances by everyone and the season is so short too at only 8 episodes.

Again in regards to ratings, they aren't a major factor in determining a premium cable show's fate. Starz sells alot of their shows to overseas markets and makes money off that along with the subscription fees. If Boss aired on an advertiser-sponsored network like FX or a major network, it probably would have gotten cancelled with the ratings it got.

Did it get any Emmy noms? I don't recall Grammer or the show being nominated. It sounds like they should have been up there though.

No Emmy nominations this year. If season 2 is good, maybe Grammer can get another Golden Globe nomination and an Emmy nomination for 2013.

Its a very solid show, and Grammer is amazing in it. Worth watching for his performance alone, future seasons or not.

Grammer is awesome, the show is not. Too over the top for my taste.

How was it too over the top? He's playing a corrupt Chicago politician with some demons both personally and professionally. It's a really dark show and some crazy stuff happened, but I found nothing about it too over the top.

Yes, very good. I never could have imagined Kelsey as anything but Frasier Crane, but he's brilliant in this.

It got better with each episode. The pilot is pretty good but the last four episodes are on a whole other level.

I thought it started strong, got plodding in the middle, and got ridiculous at the end.

It's completely farcical, but I actually really liked it.

Chicago politics can be portrayed too over the top? Clearly you don't live here.

Re: Boss - any good?

The best original series on Starz. Riveting performance by Grammar and Kathleen Robertson is sexy as hell.

Can't wait for Season 2.

Re: Boss - any good?

I have a review for Boss on Blu-ray about to be published. It's an incredible series if you like political drama and stellar performances by the entire cast. The Blu-ray set's video looks as fantastic as any live-action I've ever seen on the format. It's a quality show through and through if you have a modicum of interest in dirty politics.

Re: Boss - any good?

Thought the first season was great... there was one episode that might have been one of the best hours of drama I had seen last year and had me saying "damn" multiple times (I won't mention which episode as that might set up expectations for those who haven't seen it).

And as many have noted already, Grammar did a phenomenal job.

Re: Boss - any good?

Well, much more interest than my initial search led me to believe. I'll give this a try. Thanks for the input.

Re: Boss - any good?

I downloaded the pilot from DTV's "OnDemand" but haven't gotten to it yet. I'll make sure I pull down all the episodes before they disappear.
