why are you mad at Viacom for this action? that article makes it sound like DirecTV is pushing for them to eliminate on-line content.

Wish they offered Cinemax for free to make up for this

Unfortunately, the channels I watch are spread among all the tiers of the cable system, so I have to get them all in order to receive the few channels I watch.

And yes, I do realize that if some channels could not support themselves without being bundled in with other channels, but if they can't support themselves, maybe they just shouldn't exist. Isn't that what capitalism is all about?

I seriously doubt it - what's your cable bill now? Even in your hypothetical, there would be a minimum baseline service - probably $15-20. Then for 10 cable channels at $5 per, you're talking right there $65-70 before additional boxes, DVRs, premiums, taxes, etc.

My base DTV monthly charge (Choice Xtra + DVR) is $83.

I'm just so sick of this. I actually do watch Spike & TVLand, and the kids watch Nick. Just gets tiresome.

The religious channels (like the shopping channels) pay DTV to carry them.
If that's the case, then why are they not "in the clear" so you can get them on ANY receiver regardless of whether you're a paying subscriber or not? That's why I've always thought the DBS systems were a joke. I don't pay to be advertised to (which someone else gets paid for), and any channels I pay for have to show what I want, when I want, the way I want it (uncut, uncensored, with no interruptions and no on-screen crap). Since they don't do that, I won't have cable or satellite in my home.

Viacon is still the one doing it.

Besides it's not like pulling these shows is part of the deal they made with DTV to bring the channels back.

They're just doing this so DTV customers can't go online to watch the shows thus increasing the bargaining position of Viacon.

If you guys actually read some of that article it says that Directv thinks that free online shows undermine their service. I don't want to seem like a shill for Viacom or anything but all of guys are greedy slim balls. And a la carte would only work in a perfect world. We'd end up with like 30 or 40 channels to choose from and probably still have similar priced bills.

While I think both companies are just looking out for more money I have to side with DirecTv on this one. Viacom acts like the economy is in great shape and everyone should just pay more for their shitty programming. With Netflix streaming my daughter gets all the nick shows she needs and I couldn't care less about all the reality shows that are on supposedly "music" channels now.
It almost seems that pay televison is about to hit a breaking point. I know I keep downgrading my sub to Fios every time my contract is up.

More than ever so many people I know have been, and will be, getting rid of their cable. And it's not anecdotal either, it's really been spreading. People just don't have $100 to spend on cable like they used to - even if their income's stayed the same, that money's going elsewhere. I have my HD antennae, with a make-shift DVR (a glorified hard-drive, really, with a program my friend wrote) that I can record onto, internet connection, streaming services and tons of blu-rays & dvds - why the fuck do I need to drop $100 a month on cable?

This is pretty much exactly like a pro sports league's players going on strike. It's sort of hard to really choose to side with the millionaires (DTV) or the billionaires (Viacom) when you're the guy in the stands who ponies up hard earned money to watch.

For me, the only irritant that makes much of a difference is that Nickelodeon is my daughter's favorite channel by far. She's 4 and doesn't understand. I have a tiny cable operator who pretty much gets dictated to instead of negotiating, I'm sure. These things don't happen to us. With that said, DTV is who I would be siding with if I had a dog in the fight because they at least offered to continue the service while the negotiations continued. Really, what would the harm have been? They should have at least done that with the kid network. Yes, yes, that requires Viacom to be slightly decent instead of the outright assholes they have chosen to be. Shocker they didn't do that, but it still sucks for those kids. I'm glad I'm not the parent of them. Good luck to those of you who are.

Uh, "so many people I know" is the definition of anecdotal. Or as we say, the plural of anecdotal isn't facts.

Here are some facts for you then.

Basically, from 2000 to 2009 cable/satellite have gained roughly 2 million subscribers per year. Not only have those gains stalled, but the projection for 2012 so far is that they're going to loose over 3.5 million subscribers.

And they're panicking - this Viacom/DirecTV thing being a primary example of that panic.

People who want a la carte are greedy slime balls? We're greedy because we want to have a choice for what we wnt to financially support?

I must be bigger than the biggest greedy slime ball at Bain Capital since I canned paying for anything from the cable co. becuse of nonsense like this.

This quote is good to keep in mnd. We legally pay for their stuff yet this is what they in the industry think of us. Viacon, DTV - it doesn't matter. We're the greedy ones for not wanting to be sucked dry by them and given cheap, crappy programming in return.

Another knock against Viacom (for me, at least): apparently they ran Dora the Explorer commercials on Nick telling kids that she was going away. Now they're trying to leverage children in their fight to raise rates? Fucking shitty tactics, IMO...

He seems to have left out a word that I'm pretty sure would have made it clear he meant Viacom and DTV were the greedy slimeballs.

Both sides are assholes.

However, I called this morning to "complain" and got $15 off my bill for 6 months and an additional $5 off my bill for 3 months. Your move Viacom.

I saw the commercial saying that there was going to be no more Dora, Fresh Beat Band, Spongebob, etc., but it wasn't like they cut a brand new Dora promo for it, unless I missed it.

It's been said before, but for little kids who want a Nick fix, Netflix is great for that (assuming you have a Netflix-capable device)... they are a season behind but most of the time Nick shows endless repeats anyway. That is, until Viacom renegotiates with Netflix...

You'd think Viacom would try this when the new seasons are about to start, but to my knowledge most of the Summer is basically repeats anyway (for kids shows at least), so how much leverage do they have?
