Though no one outside the business seems to ever have good ideas beyond "Nielsen sucks".
The problem is not the Nielsen box itself, but the ridiculously tiny sample size.
0,02% is not valid for accurate statistics. It just isn't

Before I ever heard of Nielsen I just assumed that they could tell what we were watching. Don't cell phone companies keep transcripts of all our texts and ISPs have our web histories? Your iPhone while in your pocket tracks your every move. Not that I like all those things but when it comes to tv why would everyone care if our viewing habits were analyzed for ratings? Does Directv use nielsens for ratings on their 101 channel?

It would be easy enough to offer an "opt-in" monitoring ability via cable companies/TiVo. In this day and age of everyone sharing everything on Facebook/Twitter, I imagine it wouldn't be hard to increase the Nielsen sample size by a few million from people that feel their viewing habits are important.

Re: Community - Season 4 discussion

I finally got around to finishing off season 3 last night, so I could read through this thread.

Obviously, I'm not happy Harmon left, episodes like the video game one might not exist, but I remain cautiously optimistic about the new showrunners. It's possible they could just say "screw it" and continue with the eccentric episodes. They don't have 3 seasons of run-ins with the brass behind them, so they might be able to use that as a shield and continue the show's sensibilities. Sure, they might just touch it with kid's gloves and go safe, or they might realize they're almost certainly out after 13 episodes and have a whole lot of fun.

I'm kind of excited for what they do with Abed. He might catch onto how there are different powers-that-be. He caught on and exposed the fake Dean-Moby and with the meta nature of the show, I wouldn't be surprised if he finds out it goes above and beyond this.

Re: Community - Season 4 discussion

We have a premiere date for season 4: Friday, October 19

With a week or two off for holidays, the 13 episode run should end in January.

I dunno. Can't imagine they'll run a new episode the Friday after Thanksgiving, or the Fridays before Christmas and New Years. I would also assume they would want to run the series finale during February sweeps to milk the last bit of ratings they can out of it. So I think Feb. 8 will be our last episode of Community.

I fear it will be more like:

October 19, record low ratings
October 26, even lower
Series pulled, rest of episodes on DVD

When Greendale is back in session, the entire study group will be back around the table.

EW has confirmed that the entire cast — including Chevy Chase, who months ago engaged in a bitter word battle with former showrunner Dan Harmon — will be returning for the show’s fourth season.

Last month, Harmon was removed from his post at the NBC comedy and replaced by David Guarascio and Moses Portand (Aliens in America, Just Shoot Me).

The entire cast, who released a series of sweet tweets of support after Harmon’s departure, is set to appear at Comic-Con next month, and the show will air on Fridays this fall.

For the final season of Chuck last year, NBC aired new episodes on December 23 and 30. And that show was in a very similar situation as Community will be this fall: low-rated cult hit, moving to Fridays with a shortened season.

Re: Community - Season 4 discussion

Need some help "Community" community. I'm going to dress up as Abed dressing as Inspector Spacetime. Is he just wearing a red bandana as an ascot?

I have a white shirt and black jeans. Not sure if I'll go buy some grey sneakers or not, but I for sure have to buy the bowler. I used to have one for my Alex DeLarge costume, but don't know what happened to it.

Anyway, thanks for anyone that can answer my question.

Somehow this would have been a much better question by a first time poster.

According to NBC's President Bob Greenblatt, he isn't ruling out extending the season beyond 13 episodes.

Here's an interesting quote from him:

“Community has been a show that’s always on the bubble [to return] and we decided to bring it back again and see what a fourth season would do for us,” Greenblatt continued. “The reason we did 13 episodes [of Community and other shows] is we wanted to get more comedies on the schedule … which isn’t to say we couldn’t decide at some point to extend those seasons longer.”

Re: Community - Season 4 discussion

At the Geeks Who Drink trivia tonight, they had a Community question. I think it was kind of misleading, but still got it right. "What unhinged character on Community roamed the halls in all but one season?" There was really only one unhinged character on the show, but did Chang technically roam the halls? It was worded poorly in my opinion.
