Reading that Twitter timeline is painful. It's as if they're purposely trying to piss off the hardcore fans of the show. I'm sure that's their version of being "Twitter funny" though.

Here is an article from Sept, 2011. Pretty interesting insight into Harmon and his creative process.

Harmon's Circle of eight

Meh'. If Harmon was the one pushing out the very creative episodes, the show won't be the same without him. Community is a unique show with a geeky fanbase. I have my doubts that it can stay the same. Or rather, the intention is to NOT stay the same.

If nothing else, I expect a big creative shift. Kind of like how those last few season of The Drew Carey Show got all surreal and stuff (anyone remember that?).

if that's really them, that's actually pretty funny. Even if it's a fake account it's still good, haha

Given the number of people who complained about Season 3's uneven character, I think it might actually strengthen the "it's all over" mentality.

I think this show could possibly be great in Season 4. It won't be Dan Harmon, though. I do mourn that. I'll give it a shot, though.

If this season is awful, but people I have implored to watch the show come to me with some, "I finally watched an episode of Community. You were right. It's so good!" stuff, I might go on a murderous rampage.

Uh huh. This Old world media veteran invites you to write a check.
Abso-fucking-lutely. I know specific people who will rave about how amazing a show like Community is, how they've watched every episode at least 5 times, how they're the biggest fans ever... and how the studios/networks are a bunch of assholes who just don't "get it" because they (possibly) considered cancelling it after Season 1, Season 2, and partway through Season 3.
Meanwhile, those exact same people are the ones who have never once watched the show on an actual television, DVD, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, etc. ... but rather, they've downloaded every episode via torrent and stored them all on their hard drives for eternity. As "fans," they actively ensure that they don't watch the episodes in a way that generates even the slightest bit of revenue or traceable viewership of the show, yet they're baffled that the big wigs want to cancel it.

It's not just Community... other shows have suffered because of their supposedly "loyal audience" with massive libraries of .mkv files.

I'm not suggesting I'm better than anyone, either. I've done more than my fair share of obtaining movies and TV shows in shady ways, but I actively choose to go the legal route now.

Or they DVR'd it and watched Big Bang instead. (While not huge, Community goes from a 1.4 in 18 - 49 to a 2.1 in 18 - 49 in the Live+7 ratings. a 50% boost.)

Good post SomethingMore

Your are 100% correct, especially with how the Internet has impacted shows and their ratings. I read posts all the time on a site like tvbythenumbers.com where some snot nosed 20 something kid says he/she only watches shows via torrents because he/she hates commercials or doesn't own a TV. Yet he/she complains why are "good shows" like Community always in danger of getting axed.

Unless you have a Neilsen box watching on TV is useless.

I agree about buying the show on DVD etc., but clearly that's not what's going to happen going forward.

The problem is that it's still easier for these people to pirate these shows. The music industry is finally on the right track with streaming services, and the television/film industry is slowly catching up. Unfortunately, that means shitty ratings and revenue for good shows until the teens and 20-somethings can be convinced that it's actually easier and more reliable than pirating.

True. I thought digital cable as a whole offered more clarity to the numbers, but I guess that's just a misunderstanding on my part.

I disagree. I mean, sure... DVD sales are going to die for pretty much everything. But if consumers can shift toward legitimate viewing in one form or another (mostly streaming, but also some form of niche physical sales), that's half the battle. The problem right now is that none of those services (Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, etc.) are the "one stop shop" for all things TV. They're just not that good yet. I like them for what they are, but there's still huge room for improvement.

We'll get there eventually... but I'm not convinced that any of the current services will be the ones to do it. It almost needs to be a newcomer.

It's extremely frustrating watching on TV, suffering through the commercials to try and support a show, knowing that it doesn't mean a damn thing because no one cares about anything but those fucking ridiculous Nielsen numbers!

Why would you watch commercials if you don't have a Nielsen box?

To what? "Big Brother" monitoring software in every cable box? What about people who don't have cable? Or DVRs? Or internet connectivity at all?

There are new technologies rolling out all the time for Nielsen that should give more accurate readings. And the system probably will be overhauled at some point.

Though no one outside the business seems to ever have good ideas beyond "Nielsen sucks".

Do people still do torrents? With Hulu and other websites playing them all for free. I don't have cable and watch everything 'legal'.

Re: Community - Season 4 discussion

I've done my best for the past to season to watch as it airs, and will dvr it and sit through all the dvr commercials in the hopes that it might be doing something. Also while I am at work I will have the shows playing directly on NBC.com. I turn down the volume and keep the window hidden. But I am guessing that the keep track of how many plays they get through the site. This was all in the hopes that it helped. Apparently it didn't do much...
