Doctor Who Title To Regenerate With Every Episode

Last night, at the BFI screening of the first episode of Doctor Who Series Seven, the crowd were treated to a new looking Doctor Who logo in the titles of Asylum Of The Daleks. Based on the same font, it’s black with silver studs, looking all Dalek-y. Something special for the season opener?

Not a bit of it. Bleeding Cool have been told from BBC sources that the title will change with every episode to reflect the content. So Dinosaurs On A Spaceship, for example, will see the logo covered in scales…

Official Titles For Five Upcoming Doctor Who Episodes, And Blurbs For Three Of Them

Let’s take the TARDIS all the way up to Christmas. Here are the official titles and, where available, plot blurbs for the next, short run of Doctor Who. These will see the Ponds moving out of the picture, for the new companion to move in.

Episode 1: Asylum Of The Daleks – Kidnapped by his oldest foe, the Doctor is forced on an impossible mission – to a place even the Daleks are too terrified to enter… the Asylum. A planetary prison confining the most terrifying and insane of their kind, the Doctor and the Ponds must find an escape route. But with Amy and Rory’s relationship in meltdown, and an army of mad Daleks closing in, it is up to the Doctor to save their lives, as well as the Pond’s marriage. Written by Steven Moffat and directed by Nick Hurran.

Episode 2: Dinosaurs On A Spaceship - An unmanned spaceship hurtles towards certain destruction – unless the Doctor can save it, and its impossible cargo… of dinosaurs! By his side a ragtag gang of adventurers; a big game hunter, an Egyptian Queen and a surprised member of the Pond family. But little does the Doctor know there is someone else onboard who will stop at nothing to keep hold of his precious, prehistoric cargo. Written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Saul Metzstein.

Episode 3: A Town Called Mercy – The Doctor gets a Stetson (and a gun!), and finds himself the reluctant Sheriff of a Western town under siege by a relentless cyborg, who goes by the name of the Gunslinger. But who is he and what does he want? The answer seems to lie with the mysterious, Kahler-Jex, an alien doctor (yes another one!) whose initial appearance is hiding a dark secret. Written by Toby Whithouse and directed by Saul Metzstein.

Episode 4: The Power of Three – Written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Douglas MacKinnon.
Episode 5: The Angels Take Manhattan – Written by Steven Moffat and directed by Nick Hurran.

Then we’re off air until Christmas, and then we’re off air until the spring, apparently. Boo?

When Peri Met Amy – Last Night At The BFI

Nicola Bryant played Doctor Who companion Perpugilliam Brown on in the eighties, opposite Peter Davison and Colin Baker. She’s now the partner of Nev Fountain, a fellow I used to know when we both wrote for BBC Radio 4′s Weekending show. He went on to fame and semi-fortune with Dead Ringers, an impression show that was suitably obsessed with Doctor Who and, in the process, found himself getting to know Nicola better. As you do.

But it was Nicola who managed to get a ticket to the Doctor Who screening through a friend of a friend of a friend. And Nev who found himself working instead.

Still, he made up for it afterwards, taking these photos of Nicola, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill together, tweeting “The three companions.”

You know, I’ve always thought that a multi-companion Fiftieth Anniversary episode would make more sense than a multi-Doctor one…

Russell T Davies’ Gimp Dalek Appears In Doctor Who Series Opener

Back in the day when Russell T Davies was known for TV shows that didn’t involve aliens and spaceships, had himself a replica black Dalek made for his Manchester abode, referred to by some of his friends as his “gimp Dalek”, after the scene in Pulp Fiction. And for years he had to tell people it wasn’t actually a real Dalek from Doctor Who.

You know what I mean.

Anyway, the Asylum Of The Daleks, shown last night at the BFI in London, current showrunner Steven Moffat arranged for the Dalek in question to be shipped from Manchester to Wales to be used in the show. Now making it canon – so now Russell T Davies can tell friends that it is a real Dalek after all.
