It looks like the identity of the 12th Doctor will be revealed live on television in the US and UK this Sunday at 7pm London/2pm East Coast time on BBC One and BBC America!
The UK Metro newspaper put an article online, which was quickly removed, as the BBC is making an official announcement about the Sunday announcement at midnight London time. Here is the cached article: http://webcache.googleusercontent.co...c-one-3908220/ There will be a 30-minute special containing interviews with Who personalities, including Matt Smith, and the reveal of the new Doctor. New Doctor: The next Doctor Who lead actor to be unveiled this Sunday on BBC One The wait is almost over for Doctor Who fans, as the identity of the next actor to play the Doctor is to be revealed in a special one-off Doctor Who Live broadcast on BBC One this Sunday August 4 at 7pm. In front of a live studio audience, host Zoe Ball will unveil and interview the 12th person to play the Time Lord, one of the most coveted roles in British television. The half hour programme will feature Doctors old and new, companions, special guests and celebrity fans, all taking place against the backdrop of a swirling vortex with Daleks and the TARDIS stationed in the studio. Earlier in the week the BBC disguised the show in the TV listings, scheduling a fake ‘Celebrity Mastermind’ in the 7.30pm-8pm slot. Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor will end months of speculation over who will be taking over from Matt Smith, with Peter Capaldi, Ben Daniels, Ben Whishaw and David Harewood having all been linked with the role, though an unknown actor is perhaps far more likely. Executive producer Steven Moffat said : ‘The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.’ Moffat and Smith will both give interviews during the show, commenting on the role and what they believe it takes to play the Doctor. Fans in America will be able to watch the unveiling live via simulcast on BBC America. Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One said : ‘BBC One is the home of big live events and this special live show is the perfect way to reveal the identity of the next Doctor and share it with the nation. The Doctor is a truly iconic role and I’m more than excited about the booking.’ Ben Stephenson, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning meanwhile, revealed how they have been using the codename Houdini for the actor. He said: ‘We can’t wait to unveil the next Doctor with everyone live on BBC1 on Sunday night. Amongst all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work as we’ve been using the codename Houdini as a decoy! It’s the biggest secret in showbiz, even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation.’ Rory Kinnear had also been tipped as a possible Doctor, but after insisting that he won’t be joining the show his denial was compounded by his signing up to ITV drama Lucan, which films at the same time. |

BBC America has now formally announced the live special for 2pm Eastern time this Sunday, a simulcast with BBC One in the UK.
Thumbs up to BBC America for this simulcast, which allows US Doctor Who fans to learn the identity of the 12th Doctor at the same exact time as UK residents! |

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)
I gotta say - This is an exciting time to be a Doctor Who fan. Back in the 80s, I had to wait until the latest issue of Starlog to find out what was going on.

As long as the new Doctor is over 30, I'll be happy. Liked Eccleston, loved Tennant, but hated Smith in the role.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)
Well you can count me as one of those who does not want a female Doctor. I would be fine with a person of color. For me a lady Doctor would change the dynamic of the show to much. Female Doctor, Clara, Madame Vastra , Jenny and Strax... Well Strax is gender neutral but still. Throw River in the mix on occasion it would be to much..
But this is just my opinion. |
Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)
Time Lords only change genders at regeneration if they die of a suicide.
(At least according to one of the novels or BFAs.) It's an interesting concept, and would explain why gender reversals during regeneration are so rare. The only 'canon' reference to one is "The Corsair" in Gaiman's episode. |

Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor will end months of speculation over who will be taking over from Matt Smith, with Peter Capaldi, Ben Daniels, Ben Whishaw and David Harewood having all been linked with the role, though an unknown actor is perhaps far more likely. Heck, one of the biggest arguments against my hopeful 12th (Paterson Joseph) is because his previous appearance on DW was too "central" to the two-parter he appeared in at the end of the Ecceleston era, though he had fewer than 10 lines in all during the two hours the episodes spanned. |
Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)
Everything above notwithstanding, Betfair had 1/10 odds on Capaldi before suspending bet-taking yesterday, making him an overwheming favorite. The final odds are below:

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)
My wife doesn't watch Doctor Who, but when I mentioned last week that Hugh Laurie might be in the running she said she'd tune in to watch him. Besides the stunt part of that casting, he would've been awesome. Then again, I would assume he's far too rich to take the part. I think he's the only person on the list that who's casting would've directly led to higher ratings, at least in America.

On twitter, Micha Collins posted that he has an announcement to make tomorrow about the UK and phone booths.

While that would be fantastic, he likely wouldn't pre-announce something like that on Twitter and he is also committed to Supernatural as a full-time cast member. Probably a joke....but if it's not, I wouldn't be upset. |

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)
Weird to see names like David Tennant, Billie Piper, and John Hurt in the lists. Really?
Of course, I suppose it's possible that Moff could do something crazy like killing off Matt Smith's Doctor (permanently with no regeneration) and then having John Hurt (8.5) take over as "The Doctor" to redeem himself before he regenerates into the next Doctor. Doing so would also serve to push the fabled twelve regenerations limit back a positions. |

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)
I'd prefer a lesser known, or not known at all in the role.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)
I would of thought Rowan Atkinson would on the list.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)
Hugh Laurie has stated he would not do it even if he was asked. He wants to focus on his music. Benedict has also said he would not want the role. Besides as long as Sherlock has gone between seasons I doubt the BBC would want to do something to delay it more. Him in two major shows would be a little to much.
I would love to see Andrew Lee potts get a crack at it though. Richard Armitage would be an interesting choice. I would not mind him on my tv ever week but he might be a little to well known now. |

From the end of The End of Time Part 2: DOCTOR: Legs. I've still got legs, good. (kisses his knee) Arms. Hands. Ooh, fingers, lots of fingers. Ears, yes. Eyes, two. Nose, I've had worse. Chin, blimey. Hair... (runs hand through longer hair) I'm a girl! (feels Adam’s apple) No! No... I'm not a girl. (pulls hair in front of eyes) And still not ginger! |
