I understand that there's a fair bit of controversy about that scene, which implies that there were a number of pre-Hartnell Doctors.

That never occurred to me when I first watched it when I was nine or ten. I vaguely knew that there some Doctors before Tom Baker, but wasn't sure how many. I at least recognized Pertwee from the regeneration scene shown in "Robot," and knew that a few others were previous Doctors.

But I also assumed that many of the faces shown were those of Morbius.

Of course they could be the faces of "The Other" from the Cartmell Master Plan.

Valeyard, nice finds on 8 and 10. I completely missed them.

I missed Tennant the first time. Caught him on the BBC America repeat.

When I first watched that story in my teens, I definitely thought those extra faces were previous incarnations of Morbius. My cousin and I would have arguments over it because he said those faces belonged to the Doctor ("How far, Doctor? How long have you lived?"). The Producer at the time (Philip Hinchcliffe) totally intended for those faces to belong to the Doctor. He also introduced the wooden TARDIS console room and claimed it was "the old one." He had some plans afoot that never materialized (much like Cartmel's Master Plan).

I believe they picked up some of those cues during the New Adventures era. Lance Parkin was really good at digging up forgotten clues and giving them form.

Liked this episode. Probably best since the Xmas special with Clara. The couch scene may have been Smith's best work since 11th Hour.

Glad the story with Clara made sense and came full circle.

Was the scene with "1st" Doctor and Susan going into the TARDIS'/elevators stock footage, or something they put together? I've only seen a handful of pre-2005 episodes, and the recent BBCA specials, but I thought Clara inserted into all of the old episodes was really cool.

Big reveal at end = mind blown. However, I'm still really hoping to see the 8th Doctor in the 50th special. He really was good in what he had to work with and it's a shame he hasn't been used more. Especially if Eccelston doesn't want to be involved.

Something they put together.

I thought this WAS the 50th anniversary episode, and I was excitedly awaiting David Tennant's return, and the longer it took the more irritated I got that the episode was wasting Tennant-time. With 5 minutes left in the show I was even more irritated because it seemed like all I was going to get was a Tennant cameo. Stupid me.

Good episode, but as much as I like JLC I have to say it would have been a lot better if original Clara died at the end. Hard to get emotional over a one minute montage sacrifice then she comes back to life.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

Ok, I got a theory:

Spoiler:
He's got a lot of bodies. (That was referenced in the episode.)
Some of the bodies make a promise 'to be The Doctor', some kind of force of good.
At least one body did not make that promise - the time war dude.

So, it was him, but it wasn't 'The Doctor'

I have no ideas at all on how this may impact the regen count. He might be on body #43 for all I know. But maybe only 12 or 13 of those can be The Doctor? idk.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

BIG Doctor Who News coming. The BBC has issued an embargoed press release for later today.

Speculation from Bleeding Cool:

Spoiler:

The BBC have sent out an embargoed press release stuffed with big Doctor Who news. I didn’t get it so I don’t know what it contains. On the other hand, I’m not under embargo. I don’t mind keeping embargoes at all, but when I’m not under one… well, then I’ not going to follow somebody else’s.

So I can tell you what I’ve been hearing for a little while now.

According to our sources, the BBC are tonight going to announce that Matt Smith is leaving the show and that we’ll get a new Doctor as of August next year. They’ll also be announcing how many new episodes we’ll get, and it won’t be one of those cut-in-two seasons like we’ve just been through. In fact, we’ve heard talk that it’s going to run right up to a finale that is also the Christmas special.

If they have cast the new Doctor already – and we think that they have, or they at least have a somebody in the frame – the actor’s identity doesn’t appear to be part of the official announcement. I wonder if they’ve been included in the 50th anniversary special?

It seems like Jenna-Louise Coleman is staying with the show, that I’m not clear on for how long. Steven Moffat has definitely been re-upped. John Hurt is also expected to make a few more appearances after the 50th special.

Everything else… guesswork for now. Let’s see what the BBC have sent out when somebody is happy to share. There’s over five hours of embargo time left, at time of writing, but I expect somebody will go early.

Falls in line with some of the stories Ian Levine has been posting on his Facebook last week. Gotta say, if true, I'm a bit disappointed.

We'll see in a couple of hours.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

Let's get this bitch leaked...

There's one theory in the BC thread about...

Spoiler:
Smith's Doctor dying and not regenerating, and then the Hurt Doctor (the 'lost' Doctor between McGann and Eccleston) would take over as The Doctor and 'redeem' himself, and then regenerate into the next Doctor.

It's certainly an interesting concept, but it sort of completely fucks up the succession of the Doctors.

So it would be like: Hartnell>Troughton>Pertwee>TBaker>Davison>CBaker>McCoy>McGann>Hurt>Eccleston>Tennant>Smith!>Hurt>???

Not sure how I feel about this... it's certainly an interesting concept, but it completely fucks the succession and continuity of the Doctors.

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

Hurt's introduction as a missing middle doctor is already screwing with things, as Doctors 9 thru 11 all get renumbered to 10 thru 12--and 12 was once considered the limit in canon. I always thought it was ridiculous to waste a regen-number on a single TV movie (#8) rather than just ignoring it like the other non-canon Doctor Who movies. It *really* seems like a waste to force a regen-recount based on a single episode guest star. Are they going to include it in every retrospective from now on?

As for Hurt as the Doctor, yes please, and as much of it as I can get. It would be incredible for him to actually take over the show after Matt. Almost too incredible; I'll believe it if I see it.

Looks like the big news is
Spoiler:
Matt Smith is out after this year's Christmas special.

Don't know if that needs to be spoiled since it will be all over the 'net before long, but I did it anyway.

So 50th Ani special, Christmas Special and out? Season 8 with a new doctor next year?

The twelve-regeneration limit doesn't seem like a huge deal. There are any number of ways to hand-wave it away...

1. It was a limit imposed by the Time Lords. In "The Five Doctors" they offered the Master a new set of regenerations. With no more Time Lords the rule is no longer in effeapply.

2. The Doctor got River Song's regenerations in "Let's Kill Hitler."

3 The limit is no longer in effect following the Time War. The rules have changed. Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey.

Headline: Matt Smith to Leave Doctor Who at End of Year

Yeah, it's official. Now I'm really *really* hoping John Hurt is more than just a one-off. (Or two-off.)

Is there a better BBC showrunner out there to replace him? I expected Moffat to be worlds better than Davies; instead I think he was only marginally better. But I'm not aware of any promising names on the bench...

I've just been hoping they re-age the Doctor and quit trying to make him hip/cool. That's just about the only thing that annoyed me with Matt's Doctor--his obsession with being cool. Pretty vapid obsession for a Time Lord.

As for a black or woman Doctor (why the hell not!) the BBC might be ready for it, but I doubt the US geek audience would be.

Supermallet 06-01-13 06:03 PM

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

And what makes you say that? What is it about the US Who fandom that makes you think they wouldn't accept a black or female Doctor?

adamblast 06-01-13 06:16 PM

Re: Doctor Who: Series 7 (Fall 2012)

I tend to think of US geekdom in general as pretty insular, and a bastion of white hetero privilege in ways they tend not to even notice. I think a black or woman Doctor would be met in the states with a collective groan that the show has been "ruined by the PC crowd." But it's one of those things I'd sure love to be wrong about.

No idea. I don't know much about British tv. What I do know is that I'm sick of the convoluted mess of the last 3 years.

I'm sure some people will bitch about that (look at how many people cry foul when the slightest change is made to existing characters in other movies and properties), but I don't think they're the majority. I think most people just want the best actor for the job.

Supermallet 06-01-13 06:27 PM

Then again, there is the section of the fandom who will complain about every decision that's made on NuWho. And those people are just assholes.

Neil Gaiman.

No, no, no. I love Neil, but he's exactly what Moffat was during Davies' tenure: The perfect guy for memorable one-offs.
