Good article about the accuracy of the mini-series:
http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2012/...ogle_news_blog As usual, it confirms that Hollywood can't resist the temptation to change things to make a 'better story' (proving the old adage about when the facts don't agree with the legend, print the legend). The bad thing is that most modern viewers are more savvy about details and have seen so many melodramatic renditions that their 'b.s. radar' goes off when some things seem out of kilter. The article's author pointed out that there were no saloons, etc. in the Matewan area (funny how the miniseries culture seems more advanced in some ways than what is depicted in "Justifed"). She also confirmed that the Roseanne-Johnse story was blown way out of proportion...obviously the producers wanted to add as much romantic interest & sex as possible to juice the ratings and fill time (and maybe attract a bit younger audience), but seeing the whining of the younger characters threw off the pacing IMHO. I do have to wonder a bit if the idea of Randall as somewhat of a religious fanatic as opposed to "pagan" Anse (who was later baptized as shown in the series) was over-dramatized, especially when Ran'l seems to abandon his faith and rail against God in the last installment. One could see that coming, and it seemed like typical Hollywood view of religion and God-bashing. The author said her research supports the idea that Anse was more reasonable in many ways than Randall, but she also feels that the driving force of the feud was more about economic competition and jealousies than personal affronts to "honor" or Civil War grievances. Showing Randall going off the rails late in life (and the afore-mentioned scripted end) as opposed to the historical man who ran a ferry business after the feud ended also supports the article author's views that the producers kind of picked themes they wanted to show and then portrayed events in ways that would demonstrate those themes (even if the facts were changed or fudged). Overall, it's a step in the right direction for seeing more drama rather than reality tv and for more historically-BASED stories that get people searching for the real stories, so that's a good thing. Just wish they would try to avoid inventing stuff that never happened when the true story is plenty interesting. I don't know about rewatchablity, but it was worth three nights (two would have been better, though). And I caught a few moments of a rerun episode and still had a hard time recognizing Tom Berenger. |

I wonder how History channel will follow a massive success like this? If nothing else, I think it will encourage more of getting big name Hollywood actors to star in TV made movies.
Some subjects that I think might work: -Al Capone bio-pic -Early days of the KKK -Stock Car racing-this could actually build somewhat on the time period where H&M left off, as what is now a huge spectator sport began as a way to quickly transport moonshine. I think this would have a lot of appeal. |

They've been "working on" one for a while , if it's the one that was being produced by Brad Pitt and Edward Norton.

^^^ Holy shit, the cast on that miniseries is ridiculous.
It looks like it's actually going to be an HBO miniseries. |
Re: Hatfields and McCoys trailer with Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton
Holy balls, 8 episodes? This isn't a mini series it's a hbo length season.
See a McCoy and a hatfield in there I thought hatfield vs McCoy was event tv, that right there is epic! |
Re: Hatfields and McCoys trailer with Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton
I wonder if appamatox was the reason Lewis and clark was delayed?
|
Re: Hatfields and McCoys trailer with Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton
After the big success of this there's no way History doesn't make a few more miniseries. I wonder how long it will take before they take the cheap route and go from Robert Duvall caliber actors to Burt Reynolds.

Re: Hatfields and McCoys trailer with Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton
Watched this on a friends recommendation and so glad I did. Knew nothing of the story beforehand. I really enjoyed it and thought the leads were amazing in it. Also really loved the soundtrack. Can't wait to pick it up on Blu Ray.
So now that it seems i've become a history buff, is there any more good mini series to watch? |

Haven't read through the thread as I've only seen part 1, but I was not impressed. Are parts 2 and 3 better?

Re: Hatfields and McCoys trailer with Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton
Appomattox has a lot of impressive names, and also some country music stars. Surprised Hatfields and McCoys didn't take that route, but glad they didn't.

So now that it seems i've become a history buff, is there any more good mini series to watch? Ken Burn's Civil War series is really well done. |

Band of Brothers one of the best out there.
Ken Burn's Civil War series is really well done. I thought the soundmix and the hi-def cinematography for 'Hatfields and McCoys' was very very good too. |

As much as I love the sound of Band of Brothers, the audio of The Pacific knocks it (and most theatrical war films) right outta the water.
