NBC developing The Office spinoff starring Rainn Wilson for 2013

From Deadline.com. I don't know about this.

Dwight Schrute may finally be off to greener pastures… literally. I hear that NBC is working on an Office spinoff starring Rainn Wilson for a potential midseason 2013 launch. No deals have been closed yet but I’ve learned that the proposed spinoff is a family comedy, which was the brainchild of Wilson and The Office executive producer/showrunner Paul Lieberstein. It will have Dwight (Wilson) living at the Schrute family beet farm and bed & breakfast, which have been featured on the show several times, including in an episode where Jim and Pam visited Dwight there. The potential spinoff will be introduced in an Office episode later this season set at Schrute Farms. “Paul and Rainn have been joking for years about Dwight’s life on the farm, his family and how ill-suited he is to run a B&B,” a source close to The Office said. “A while ago, it started to feel like a show to them. NBC agreed, it’s been further developed to include multiple generations, many cousins and neighbors. (It is unclear if that would include cousin Mose who has been featured on the show.) At its base it will be about a family farm struggling to survive and a family trying to stay together.” Wilson and Lieberstein will executive produce the spinoff with The Office executive producers Ben Silverman, who has been working with Wilson and Lieberstein on the development of the project, and Howard Klein. Greg Daniels, who developed and executive produces The Office, is not involved in the offshoot. He has his hands full already with The Office, Parks & Recreations and his newly picked-up NBC comedy pilot Friday Night Dinner.

This is NBC’s second stab at launching an Office spinoff. Under Silverman, the network seriously considered the idea during the 2007-08 season but the efforts were ultimately re-directed to the Amy Poehler-starring Parks & Recreation, which hails from The Office‘s Daniels and Michael Schur.

If NBC proceeds with the spinoff, that will not mean an immediate departure from The Office for Wilson. If the veteran comedy is renewed for a ninth season as many expect, Wilson will return in the fall before segueing to the new series in mideason. Deliberately or not, the writers on The Office have been planting the seeds for a potential Dwight departure from Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton office. Deeply convinced that he is the best salesman there, Dwight was crushed when it was Andy (Ed Helms) and not he getting the manager job vacated by Michael Scott (Steve Carell). Ever since Michael left, Dwight, now No. 2 to Andy, has been unhappy and looking to do something new. He recently flew to Tallahassee to interview with uber boss Robert California (James Spader) for a position there. The setup for the spinoff, with Dwight moving to a new family environment is reminiscent of the Cheers spinoff Frasier, which also featured a switch from a workplace to family format, moving Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) to a new locale.

Even with the promise of a potential new show, NBC is also serious about trying to extend the mothership series. I hear that The Office producer Universal Television has re-opened discussions with the other key Office cast members, approaching them over the past week or so with informal offers for next season. None of the core Office cast members, including Ed Helms, John Krasinksi and Mindy Kaling, have deals for next season, and while the studio can’t formally sign the actors before there is a renewal for the show, it is trying to shore them up in anticipation of a pickup. It may not be easy to get the whole gang back together. Helms has movie offers lined up, including a Hangover trequel. Krasinski had been hinting that this could be his final season on The Office as he too has been busy in features, including co-writing and starring with Matt Damon in a movie directed by Gus Van Sant, which will start shooting in April. And Kaling, who is also a writer/co-executive producer on The Office, has been actively developing her own shows and has a live-action and animated comedy in contention at NBC.

Not really interested in a Dwight spinoff, and if it means him leaving the Office part way through, its leaving very little reason to watch the Office.

Funny thing is instead of behind the scenes of a spin off I'd rather see Paul Leiberstien's character Toby spun off in a new series.

Him and Oscar are used on the current show way to little.

Hell have Toby "happen" to move next door to Oscar and his partner with their newly adopted Chinese baby then there's the series I'd love to watch.
The setup for the spinoff, with Dwight moving to a new family environment is reminiscent of the Cheers spinoff Frasier, which also featured a switch from a workplace to family format, moving Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) to a new locale.
The problem and big difference here is that Frasier was a small character on Cheers. Rainn Wilson is one of the stars of the show...and hardly a breakout star at that.

It'd be like if NBC spun off Ted Danson to a home environment. I suspect the results would have been lackluster compared to Frasier.

Then again something like Lou Grant was successful and that was a one hour drama.

If they moved Dwight into a one-hour drama, I'd totally watch it.

You really think The Office would still be around for the Fall 2013 season? I have my doubts that it will even be back for this upcoming season. It has struggled mightily since Carrell's departure. What have the ratings been like this year compared to last?

BTW : I like how they name-check Fraiser but conveniently forget "Joey".

I have the feeling this will end up being more "Joey" than "Frasier" if it comes off. But if it helps hasten the ending of "The Office" before it becomes any more of a pitiful remnant of what it used to be, then I'm all for it.

Doesn't sound like an enticing show but I would give it a chance. I'd like to see it develop its own style instead of inherit the awkward mockumentary style of The Office.

They're at least two seasons too late for that.

Ratings don't matter when you're in fourth place.

I'm going by what the article says about another season

I don't think its "struggled" as far as quality anymore then last season, but as far as viewership it looks like its only at about 5-6 million viewers, down about a million from 6-7 last season.

Hopefully they'll remain there years to come so The Office can make it to 20 seasons like Law and Order.

I re-read the article and didn't see any mention of it being a drama or one hour.

Plus Paul Leiberstien comes from comedy (The Office of course but also King of the Hill) so I'm not sure that's what they have in mind.

They should give Gabe his own show so I won't have to watch him anymore.

If the Office does end, Erin could start working for Dwight on the new show. I don't see any of the other characters having a life beyond the original show.

It's still NBC's most-watched Thursday show by far, though, so it's not getting cancelled.

Re: NBC developing The Office spinoff starring Rainn Wilson for 2013

I like the Dwight character but I don't know if I'd enjoy watching an entire show based on him. Seems like it might be too much of the character after a while but it could work. I might at least check it out if it does end up happening just to see what it's like as I don't mind Rainn Wilson somewhat.

This seems like it could be potential bad news for The Office with Carrell already gone and Wilson going on to do his own thing. Honestly though I'd have to guess the series is probably close to the end anyways. It's already in it's 9th year which is pretty long for a comedy and has lost it's start. Not to mention some of the main stars that are left are becoming bigger names and will probably start moving on to do more movies and such (Ed Helms, John Krasinski).

Re: NBC developing The Office spinoff starring Rainn Wilson for 2013

Just to clarify, this is currently the 8th season of The Office.

Even though The Office still gets decent ratings on Thursday, it has to be getting pretty expensive to produce now, especially for a 30 minute show. The cast is huge and I assume it's going to cost NBC an arm and a leg to re-sign everyone for a 9th season, especially Helms and Krasinski.

BTW, a Schrute farms spinoff is an awful idea. I have to assume they would do it as a backdoor Pilot during a possible 9th season since it wouldn't air until midseason.

I'd give it a shot, but enough of The Office and spinoffs already. Without Carell it's not The Office anymore... IMO.

What makes Parks and Recreation a "spinoff" of the Office? The fact that it's also a Mockumentary? Is Modern Family a spinoff of the Office, too?

Or is it a spinoff because of the people on the other side of the camera? Are Once Upon a Time and Alcatraz both spinoffs of Lost?

Who said Parks and Rec was a spinoff? A spin off show with Amy Poehler was the original idea...they scrapped the idea and created Parks and Rec instead.
