Re: Dexter -- "Ricochet Rabbit" -- 12/04/11
This season is a step up from Season 5. I enjoyed S5 a lot when I re-watched it on Blu but I'd still rank it lowest, it obviously has to be one of them. Having seen 10 of the 12 current season episodes I don't mind ranking it among the rest. They'd have to really drop the ball to get me to change my assessment:

That's my pick for my least favorite season. It just seemed to meander about (with the "looking for Freebo" and "Skinner" stories). But even Dexter's worst season was worth watching for me.
Season 2 was my favorite. Everything just seemed to be extra intense, with Dexter himself being the target the manhunt.
I'm not judging this season till it's over. But it feels like it could be in the running with season 3 for my least favorite. For many of the reasons we've talked about in these threads. Hanks not being a compelling "big bad" (though Olmos could've been) ... laughably telegraphed "twist" of Gellar not being real ... side plots we don't care about (like La Guerta nagging Deb all the time).

Wait, what? Are you serious?
First of all, season two is one of the two seasons that had Doakes in it (No Doakes season could be bad), and it was the Bay Harbor Butcher season! It's arguably one of the most popular seasons.
And five had Lumen. Lumen was awesome.
This season has Tom Hanks' terrible actor of a son and not much else.

Doakes was more annoying than LaGuerta, and Season 5 was boring. Every thread on here was just bitching about how bad Julia Stiles/Lumen were.

Season 5 and The Search For a Nanny.
S2 was good.
S3 had Smits, which was good, but the whole season seemed scattered, as mentioned. Also way too much LaGuerta.
Having said all that, even bad Dexter is still pretty damned good, except for S5.

Though I haven't watched Season 1 or 2 in 3 years, and I watched them back to back.

I haven't watched season 2 since it first aired, but I remember not being too big of a fan. This season and season 2 would probably rank among the lowest seasons for me. There were problems with other seasons, but I thought the good outweighed the bad. For example, I agree with the problems in the Jimmy Smits season, but I thought Smits and his character's interactions with Dexter were enough to rank it above season 2. Also, I wasn't a big fan of Doakes; I didn't think it was too big of a loss when he went boom.

Man, according to that interview posted earlier, a number of directors and Colin Hanks didn't even know Gellar was in his head until the 8th episode. Damn.

I can believe that Colin Hanks didn't understand what was going on. I'm pretty sure that guy's in a coma, or at the very least sleepwalking all the time.

Can we please stop getting off track in these threads? This is twice now from the same poster. Please, let's just move on.
Anyway, finally watched it... Hanks isn't any better now that he's 100% psycho. I think the intern's video game and Dexter's reaction will definitely set things in motion for him to be a real life serial killer. He'll probably use that excuse that he's gathering material for his game. Maybe he'll be called the video game killer?
I like that Deb figured out Matthews already. I also like her sorta discovering more about herself and her feelings towards Dexter... this all seems to point to her dying. Hopefully, the writers won't go that route but at this point I wouldn't be surprised.

As mentioned earlier, the writing is pretty sloppy to the point where it's become silly. The security guard with the door, the 911 call from Dexter is his own voice, cops entering the church nonchalantly, etc.
It's also getting damn ridiculous how Dexter can get information about someone so quickly with a search engine or some other means. I don't need to watch him struggle to find important info on Google for 20 minutes in real time - but just have some time elapse in the show. Things drop into his lap way to quick and easily.
I thought the scene where Dexter was watching Travis in a conversation with himself was pretty cheesy - and it was extra lame that it luckily happened right in front of Dexter's limited view. Even the dialog is bad... after Travis' soliloquy, Dexter tells us "I have to stop him". Ugh.

Interesting twist on how Gellar was completely innocent and it was always Travis. I knew Gellar was dead but thought he was partially guilty of at least plotting the killings and Travis was only completing the plans, so I didn't see that one coming.
Some things in this episode that I thought were setting something up...
- Batista calling Quinn and leaving a message just before visiting wacko & wife's home. I think that totally set up Quinn showing up and rescuing Batista in the next episode.
- Dexter always using the computer to search and then returning to the previous screen before walking off as computer geek intern walks in. Totally setting up the geek looking at the browsing history and finding something out about what Dexter has been doing.
- Travis deciding it was a sign to poison the police station makes me think at least one regular character at the station will die. (Of course, it may just be a throw away character we seldom see, like Chief Matthews.)

The show gets sillier every year. Last year, I really liked the Lumen character and the dynamic that she brought to Dexter and the show. This year...not so much. Even Brother Sam seemed a little forced. And Travis is probably only better than the Skinner in terms of "big bads".
I still miss Doakes.

So, Laguerta or the chief. One of them has to die anyway or this dead hooker storyline will never end.

Another thing (for Dexter and all other shows/movies). It's 2011... everyone's basically used a computer at home or work. There's no need to provide digitized sounds effects when we see someone surfing the web or running an application on the computers. We understand that when you type something in or push a mouse button that information will be provided to you on the screen - we don't need unrealistic sounds to tell us it's happening.

Also, not until this (or maybe last) season did I know/notice that the Miami Metro HQ is on the waterfront. They use noticeably different establishing shots this season, but it just didn't seem that way location wise in the first season for example.

Good episode in my opinion. I don't really care what others think the show is still fun to watch and Dexter even at it's weakest is better than most other stuff on television. The 911 call was a mistake on Dexter's part but how do we know the writers aren't putting it there as Dexter making a mistake and maybe it will be brought up later? After all
I like that they're using Quinn's drinking habits as coming back and effecting not only himself but Batista now being put in danger because of him. I also really like the therapy sessions Deb's been having and revealing the issues that she obviously has. Seems like this could be another way to bring to light the truth about Dexter for her.
The show isn't perfect but it's still entertaining to me. A lot of the griping in this thread seems like people are just picking apart every little aspect of the show trying to find flaws. Colin Hanks isn't the world's best actor but I think people are being overly harsh on him. He's playing a wacko religious killer and I think he's acting the part fairly well. I think this season is way better than season five was and would rank it fairly high (1, 2, 4, 6, 3, 5 are my rankings as of now).

Question: how did Travis find the Richochet Rabbit boat with the original whore on it? How did he know where it was and that she was there?
When Travis first caught her (before letting her go), she was chosen randomly in a parking lot, so he didn't have a lot of info on her besides still having her IDs from when she was his prisoner. How did he know she was now staying on a boat owned by her boss (with whom she was apparently having an affair with)?

Ignoring the unrealistic nature of Internet use (I chalk that up to it being a TV show), my point is that when Dexter got up from browser to walk out, the computer geek would be walking in right then. That coincidence recurring in the episode seemed to me to be directly setting up the geek eventually checking his browsing history as a plot device in a later episode.

Sort of wondered that myself. It looked like he followed her out there, so maybe he (as "Gellar?") had been stalking her since he let her go.
