The actor (Damon Wayans Jr.) was already on another show, "Happy Endings". Had that show been cancelled he would have continued on New Girl. ABC did not cancel it so they had to replace him with another actor for actors beyond the pilot. This happens more than you realize, but usually they just reshoot the pilot with the new actor (or just the required scenes), but they liked the pilot so much they didn't want to change it.
There is at least one other case of this happening this season. Nancy Travis shot the pilots for both "Hart of Dixie" and "Last Man Standing" and both were picked up. She's continuing with LMS and I hear she just appears in the pilot of HoD.

Wasn't a big fan of the pilot, and this mostly treaded water. It's a pedestrian comedy to my eye and I still find Zooey's character unbelievably annoying.
I only laughed once (Helena Bonham Carter joke), and have little doubt I'll be dropping it shortly.
Considering the ratings, many are enjoying this. I'm just not one of you.
Regardless, congratulations on the full season order.

The show seemed better put together (if that makes sense) than the pilot, and the Jess character isn't as retarded as in the pilot - but everything felt pretty cliched and I didn't find it very funny.
Is there any point to the C.C. character other than her being protective of Jess? Basically Schmidt hits on her, she rejects him... she gives Jess a short little pep talk... and that's it. She has very few lines of dialog.

2nd episode wasn't that great to me either. I think they're just doing a really poor job of managing the characters, and there's only 4 or 5 of them.

I enjoyed this more than the pilot as well, but I may struggle to make it through an entire season. I think the new roommate is actually better than coach. I like how they gave him a backstory as well so him knowing the two guys fit nicely.
The douchebag jar needs to come back though, but Schmidt is worse than ever.

Actually they got Nancy Travis back for another episode so they'd get the opportunity to write her out.
Though it won't surprise me (if this gets a full season pickup) if she comes back again cause for some reason, I don't think the Tim Allen show will last.

Also for don't get all the hatred for the show. I'll admit Jess comes across a little mopey this first eps, but then she just broke up. It also seems like she's channeling the character Brick from The Middle (whispers The Middle).
I'm thinking Superfro is right that everyone will think the show is much better later on and backtrack on their opinion based on these early episodes.

I was feeling my hate rising again during the first half of this episode, but it actually got funnier by the end. Saved from deletion for another week.
