You do realize that 100 swords is a lot more than what Ned had at his disposal right?

Now what the fuck is he going to do? The idea that Cersei could dismiss Robert's decree with "we have a new king now" is completely alien to him.

This is a man who in the first episode executed a man as a punishment because he's the lord. The king has his own executioner to do that for him. King's Landing is no place for someone like Ned.

When you think about it none of the men vying for the throne seem like they would make good kings.

Robert wasn't a good king either, nor was the Mad King before him, so I guess Westeros is used to it.

I'd say it was more the Houses of Arryn, Stark, and Baratheon. The Lannisters didn't get involved until it was clear the Targaryens were going to lose.

I'm not sure if the show will go by that. The opening titles have the basic history of Westeros shown in the engravings on the astrolabe:

- The Targaryen Dragon laying waste to the land
- The Stag (Baratheon), Direwolf (Stark), and Lion (Lannister) attacking the Dragon
- All the sigil animals bowing in obedience to the Stag with his head held high

Considering the Presidential contenders in our history, the U.S. can relate.

Actually, most countries would say the same.

The best & the brightest usually get buried early or don't have the stomach to engage in the political infighting & mercenary attitudes that seem to go with the job.

Cersei = 1
Ned = 0

Ned should have treated Cersei the way The Mountain treats unruly horses. -eek-

And the richest and most intellegent do not fight for it, just run the kingdom; another parralell to modern politics. Why be the one with the target on your chest and have responsibilities when you can rule and reap the rewards in the shadows.
