It's not a hack on the Roku. HBOGo is an official channel.

As far as I understand it, Roku doesn't actually build or provide support for any of the channels. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc create and maintain their own channels. Roku just supplies the development tools. So wouldn't any negotiating be between HBO and the cable companies? Anyways, it appears that Comcast and DirecTV don't want HBOGo on set-top boxes.

Comcast and DirecTV -- the two largest U.S. pay-TV distributors -- are not allowing their subscribers to access HBO's authenticated TV Everywhere service, HBO Go, via the Roku Internet-connected set-top in what appears to be a move to avoid lending support to a potential over-the-top competitor.

"We believe this was a conscious decision made by the management teams of DirecTV and Comcast in order to protect their brand and identity in consumers' living rooms," BTIG analyst Rich Greenfield wrote in a blog post.

Re: HBO Go

On the other hand, Comcast's Xfinity app seems to have a lot of HBO content. Might even be everything that's on HBOGo. So if Comcast blocks HBOGo on the 360, I'm hoping it'll all be available on the Xfinity app.

Re: HBO Go

Just guessing here, but given Microsoft desire to take up our living room, I can see them trying to make the HBOGO app "exclusive" to the Xbox(at least for some providers). Like they did with Netflix at the beginning.

Just my guess, no basis or sources here.

Re: HBO Go

I just got HBOGo on my Samsung Smart TV

The list of providers that support it was waaaaaaaay smaller than the website version, which I'm sure is similar to Roku. Luckily Cox is there!

Re: HBO Go

I finally got it for Time Warner a few weeks ago. I'm loving the app. Now I'm just waiting for it to get to PS3 so I can enjoy it on my tv.

Re: HBO Go

I don't see Time Warner on either the Roku or Samsung list, so temper your PS3/360 expectations for enjoying it on the big tv

http://www.hbogo.com/activate/#devices

Even those are equal. DirecTV is on the Samsung, but not the Roku.

Re: HBO Go

Am I missing something? Why is everyone happy to get it on the Roku, PS3, 360 or their TV app? Cant you just watch it through the cable box? You have to be a paying member of HBO to watch it..

Re: HBO Go

HBOGo is a much better version of HBO On Demand. If you have HBO, check out the differences yourself.

Comcast On Demand doesn't have the (nearly) full catalog of HBO material that HBO Go has here, just the more recent stuff.

He obviously understood that because he was asking specifically about main displays in the house

No, but it's close. There was one older series they weren't carrying, but I can't remember the name now. There may be others as well...HBO has been around for a while.

I just read Comcast and Time Warner is blocking HBO GO on the new Sammy TVs (in addition to all the other devices they block it on). Someone really needs to go to the FCC about this. I'm waiting to see if they block it when HBO GO comes to the XBox later this year.

Re: HBO Go

I feel like we've had this discussion before. Why would they allow it on the Xbox, PS3, AppleTV, etc if they've already blocked it twice on similar devices / delivery mechanisms?

Re: HBO Go

HBO GO coming for Xbox 360 on April 1st just in time for Game of Thrones Premiere.

http://gizmodo.com/5888933/hbo-go-pu...xbox-april-1st

Great news!

HBO Go will be available on your Xbox 360 beginning April 1st. Engadget reports that the service will arrive on consoles alongside the premiere of the new season of Game of Thrones. Time to consider cable again.

Re: HBO Go

Apple TV 3 is about a week from being unveiled and released. I imagine it'll support apps too and I expect HBOGo to be ready at launch.

Awesome, I haven't really used it because I don't want to watch shows on my computer or phone.

Nice! I was just thinking about this. I don't have the first half of season 2 of Boardwalk Empire recorded, and it's not available right now on demand. As Shady12 said, I don't really want to view it on my computer. I probably will, though ...

The user interface is absolutely awful, but I haven't had any problems with the quality of playback.

Re: HBO Go

Thought it was coming April 1st...BUT HBO GO FOR XBOX LIVE IS NOW AVAILABLE! Already got it downloaded and activated and working beautifully.. And I can confirm it DOES work if you have DirecTV! Woo hoo!!

Time to finally finish The Wire! I'd watched the first two seasons on DVD years ago and got sidetracked and realized it had been long enough to where I'd need to start over.
