re: The Voice (NBC) Singing Competition -- Series Discussion Thread

Did anybody watch last night?

Christina made some really, really weird comments regarding the other judges. You can tell she was trying to be funny, but that's not how it came off.

That Voice correspondent needs to go. If they want live updates and feedback then have Ryan do that while he's not out on stage. Have that room be off to the stage in an enclosed sound proof area.

I really found the "my team is better than your team" (especially from Christina off putting. Plus, it made no sense because it was teams still competing within themselves. If they wanted it to be team based why didn't they have 2 people from each team go? Then it would have a better sense of how somebody from one team is compared to others.

I love how Blake and Adam called Christina out for putting the dancers/mimes in the one performance.

For Christina I think Raquel and Lily will go home. However, I could see Christina saving Raquel and letting Frenchie go.

I find Blake's team much more difficult to call. Everybody is smitten with Xenia, but she always seems so lost, forgets words or sections and hardly even has any voice (no pun) coming out. However, you can clearly see Blake believes in her. I think she'd do better to have private support and to grow personally for a few years rather than win this competition. For me Patrick came off as more smug than confident and his song didn't seem like the best choice. I'd say Dia and Jared should advance.

Carson. Unless that was a joke, to which I say "Ha! Funny."

Yeah, but had to laugh at Levine's comment asking whether she's implying he shit his pants (unbleeped). Guess that answered the question as to whether this was truly live.

I've enjoyed this up to now but found last nights really boring.

Alright, Christina, you are officially fat, please stop wearing outfits like that.

I also don't think that she was trying to be funny w/ Adam and Blake. I think they legitimately do not like each other.

So long that Beverly moves on (and she'll be america's choice anyway) I couldn't care less about who else moves on, maybe Dia.

Dia impressed me the most, just because she was the only one that didn't do a cookie-cutter cover. Blake's group number didn't do her any favors... but frankly, they all sounded awful in that song. Adam should have been cringing instead of cheering.

Xenia, I like her voice but she's just so awkward out there and contrary to what the judges said, I don't think the cheesy Rebecca Black choreography did her any favors. It was like watching somebody play that Kinect dance game on the easiest setting. I don't know if she plays instruments, but she would be so much better off behind a piano or guitar, just to keep her arms busy doing something that didn't look silly.

The bald guy just annoys the hell out of me for some reason. Maybe it's his 'douchey rocker' look, I don't know.

Beverly sounded great, but Melissa Etheridge's "I'm the Only One" was pretty much the most predictable song she could've done. It's like they looked at her... "Hmm, a lesbian rocker. I know the perfect song!"

Christina's younger girls didn't really impress me vocally. Racquel is cute, but a Ke$ha song isn't really the best vocal showcase. Lily did okay with the Fergie song, but she was the worst in the group number. Frenchie killed it in the group, and her solo number was okay if not quite as 'off the charts' as it could have been.

I just hope the voting audience doesn't put that generic country guy through just because he's a country singer. He's not terrible, just terribly average. It didn't help that "I Hope You Dance" is one of my least favorite songs of all time.

Christina will go with Frenchie or Beverly. My guess is Frenchie.

Blake will go with Dia or Xenia. I believe he'll choose Dia because she's way more comfortable on the stage and presents a better chance of winning.

That being said, I find Xenia's voice amazing. I actually bought two of her 3 songs. Price Tag and Breakeven (Falling to Pieces). Her tone & phrasing are just amazing, especially given her age and experience (or lack thereof). Unfortunately she's just too uncomfortable and nervous up there.

I really wish they had done two weeks of the battle rounds and given them more live shows. Christina & Blake are cutting out 3 of their performers after a single live show. They should have done 1 extra live show and went from 4 to 2 to 1 instead.

It seems to me like Adam & Blake are getting along well and both give Christina a lot of shit and she doesn't deal with it well. I don't get the vibe that she & Adam get along.

There was a stark difference, though, last night between Blake's performers and Christina's. As my man Too $hort said, "...but some dumb fools want to take it outta hand. With 50 million dancers and a big ol' band..." All those dancers she put on the stage detracted from her product. They didn't enhance it.

I have a feeling the battle round will be drastically different next season.

I agree. Nice to see the arrangement be not like a straight cover.

Hell, just sit on a stool with a mic and let her sing. Just don't make her do that ridiculous choreography. But according to her bio on the site:

Few of her high school classmates even knew Xenia could sing – until now. The young artist from Temecula, California also plays the guitar, harmonica and piano by ear.

Major miss on Blake's part to not have her on piano or guitar for that song.

I told the wife they should have given him a Brett Michaels song since that's obviously who he wants to be.

According to the rules, the judge still gets to choose his/her person. It's as if the audience votes just tell them who the audience liked best. Unless I read it wrong. But it says:

"At the end of the battle episodes, only the strongest members of each coach's roster remain and proceed to the live stage shows. In this final performance phase of the competition, the top contestants from each team will compete against each other during a live broadcast. The television audience will vote to save one contestant on each team, leaving the coach to decide live who they want to save and who will not move on."

I thought the way Ryan described it last night is that next week 2 members from each team are off. The audience chooses one to stay and the coach chooses one to stay. I think that's consistent with what you just posted, but it's not made very clear.

^ That could be. I honestly missed Carson, I mean Ryan, explain the format which is why I went to the site to see how it would play out. Hopefully it is that way and they can each save 2.

If so, then Beverly & Frenchie and Dia & Xenia.

That's correct, it will go down to 8 and then America votes 1 by 1.

Dia all the way baby. As soon as i saw her on this show i know who i was cheering for. I've seen her perform live before and she has a beautiful voice. If she leaves i'm done with this show.

Finally watched the show and agree that Dia was pretty great but I like Xenia as well just because I like her voice, and I think they actually do a diservice to her by trying to take away her awkwardness and innocence away.

I think everyone on Christina's team is pretty bad...

Nope. After 8, it goes down to 4. Then the 4 perform and a winner is chosen.

I hope this is correct. I want the show to wrap up quickly. Idol feels too long, it creeps along so slowly stage by agonizing stage that I lose interest. I like "The Voice"'s relatively brisk pace. Quicker judging, quicker eliminations, no excruciating preliminary auditions in different cities.

I watch for the performances, not to see who wins, so the longer it lasts the better for me.

Same with me, but I still lose interest. I don't know. Even the best show can wear out its welcome. Every year with Idol, I just don't care at a certain point. Maybe the singers just weren't good enough to sustain my interest? I don't know. There's still something to be said about having good singers and leaving us with wanting more instead of seeing the same thing week after week albeit with one less singer each time.

re: The Voice (NBC) Singing Competition -- Series Discussion Thread

There's a balance, as you say. The line will be different for everyone. AI bores me not because it's long, but because they insist on singing songs usually popular before the contestants were even born. In other words, we don't get to see them at their best. I get tired of that.

The Voice, on the other hand, has current songs and judges. I'm not really into the teams concept as currently constructed. I'm also not into the "battle ring". When the judges had to drop a member from their team, I'd rather it be one member each week. I really could live through it. And I like that the judges perform too. I really liked that rendition of Crazy at the beginning of the season, and the most recent performance too.

Anyway, I'd say AI needs to be more current, and I could deal with The Voice being a little longer.

re: The Voice (NBC) Singing Competition -- Series Discussion Thread

I like that they're doing the judges singing with the contestants. I thought Blake was hilarious singing This Love and even funnier when he was standing behind Carson crossing his fingers while Adam was "judging" it.

This show can be cut down to 1 1/2 easily but other than that I like it.

Carson is really awkward on live TV. You'd think he'd know a thing or two considering he started his career doing live TV. It's just really hard to watch him struggle through it. I imagine Ryan Seacrest at home counting stacks of money and laughing at Carson Daly.

Well I don't think he has much to work with. He seemed better when he was interviewing the contestants during the elimination round in the lobby. It might be better if he spent time with each behind stage just before they go on. You could see the others waiting listening to those performing ahead of them.

The results were what I expected and I'm pleased. Was underwhelmed by Adam & CeeLo's teams for the most part. The chick covering Jolene did good and Nakia was alright. Nobody wowed me though.

Yeah, he really seems to fall apart when the coaches' banter gets out of control. Seacrest knows when to reign that sort of thing in, and he's not afraid to step in when he has to. Carson just doesn't seem to know when to react in those situations, like he's afraid to interrupt the big stars.
