That and you'd hope that the renewed (and expanded) interest in the series would light a fire under him. I'm sure HBO wouldn't mind seeing where it's going and getting a grasp on what it would take to finish it off.

Call me a pessimist, but I doubt they'll finish the series with all the books (assuming he finishes them). It just seems like too expensive of a show to run for 6-8 years.

I'd love to see it at least last through the events of the third book.. Book three is probably my favorite book of fiction. It is hard to picture a show like this last 7+ seasons, but it would be nice.

I'm already pretty happy just getting one. Anything after 2 will be gravy. I mean, with the books, it's not like I'll feel short changed on not getting a full story.

Not really. Each book stops at a natural stopping point, but it's more like Lord of the Rings than True Blood.
I think the plan is one season per book. Which makes me wonder what will happen if the series continues to succeed. There's a chance, I suppose that by the time they get to Season 6 (no sooner than 2016 and maybe later if HBO puts more than 12 months between seasons), Martin will have written book six. I think it's next to impossible that he has written book 7 by the time they're ready to film it. So what then? Does Martin let them film the story the way his books will play it out, thereby spoiling his last book? Does the show go off in its own direction, straying from the plot of the books? It will definitely be an interesting situation.

Book 1 - Season 1
Book 2 - Season 2
Book 3 - Season 3 and 4
Book 4 - Season 5
Book 5 - Season 6 and 7
Book 6 - Season 8
Book 7 - Season 9
Now Book 3 and Book 5 might be one season, if they bump it up to 13-14 episodes per season, I could see additional cuts being made

Really? You really can't tell these stories in 10-13 hours? We're only 2 into season one and I feel like a shit-ton has happened. Roughly what percentage of book one are we at?
How much is the written word devoted to descriptions and exposition that can be told on screen indirectly?

I hate these "non-spoiler" hinting posts. It takes away from a person discovering stuff on their own. Also, a lot of times when people make these types of posts they aren't being as subtle or clever as they think and end up spoiling things anyway.

I already had a friend that I turned onto the show spoil something for me because he was discussing it with his coworkers and they said "Oh, you mean the....?"
I was furious
Is it really so hard to understand the difference between a new tv series and the book series it's based upon?

I think it is safe to say that if you are answering anything about the future..even if it is vague..put a spoiler tag on it.

I think it will break down like this, if not for the simple fact to give GRRM more time to finish the series, but also the amount of stuff in each book:
Book 1 - Season 1
Book 2 - Season 2
Book 3 - Season 3 and 4
Book 4 - Season 5
Book 5 - Season 6 and 7
Book 6 - Season 8
Book 7 - Season 9
Now Book 3 and Book 5 might be one season, if they bump it up to 13-14 episodes per season, I could see additional cuts being made

Pretty funny picture, putting spoiler tags because I am not sure the contents of the picture were discussed in the episode.
