Haha, that .gif is awesome.
I don't think that it being one of the funniest things on the show means we can't feel bad for Jerry. In fact, I think the audience is supposed to both sympathize with him, but at the same time enjoy seeing him get dumped on since it is done in such a funny way.

I think it's actually presented to the audience in a completely opposite way. The audience is meant to be one of "the group". And as someone said before, every group has a punching bag that they honestly don't feel bad about ripping on. If you feel bad, good for you. You're a good person. But I don't think that's the intent of the presentation.
