I've seen the mini-series once, though I can't recall much about it. I don't see how they'll condense this into a 2+ hour theatrical tentpole. I agree, an HBO mini-series would be a better fit.

I wouldn't balk at the hiring of Justin Timberlake for the role of Larry, as the role really should go to a real performing artist. It would be nice if "Baby Can You Dig Your Man" became a real hit single.

I'm old enough to remember waiting, oh, the entire decade of the 80s for George Romero's rumored film version of The Stand. So forgive me for saying, "I'll believe it when they start rolling cameras on this."

When did they put out the book with Romero as the director being touted?

I remember Romero wound up doing The Dark Half, which was nowhere near as epic to say the least.

Stephen King Talks The Stand Remake

Stephen King wants Jake Gyllenhaal as Stu RedmanIt was announced on Monday that Warner Bros. and CBS Films is moving forward on a big screen adaptation of Stephen King's seminal 1978 novel The Stand, which was turned into a television miniseries back in 1994.

Stephen King has come forward to talk about the upcoming project, which follows the survivors of a man-made plague that has wiped out most of mankind. The author offered the ten things he knows for a fact about this new version of The Stand.

Here is what he had to say:


"1. No one will be able to top Gary Sinise, who played Stu Redman in the original ABC miniseries The Stand. He was perfect. When he says "You don't know nothing" to the soldiers who are putting him under mandatory quarantine, you believe his contempt completely. My runner-up pick would be Jake Gyllenhaal.


2. I didn't know anything about the remake until I read about it on the Internet.


3. You absolutely can't make it as a two-hour movie. If it was a trilogy of films...maybe.


4. Molly Ringwald won't be playing Fran Goldsmith this time. 


5. Rutger Hauer is a little too old to play the Walkin' Dude, and that's too bad.


6. People who've seen Stanley Kubrick's The Shining dislike the miniseries I wrote (and my amigo Mick Garris directed) even if they haven't seen it. That's always annoyed me. But the wheel of karma turns! This time people will probably say, "The miniseries was lots better." BUT...


7. ...historically speaking, movie studios blow the budget on things like this, so maybe it'll be fun to look at. The dough certainly isn't going to me, although if it is a trilogy, and if it makes a lot of money, I might be able to buy a chicken dinner at Popeye's. Great slaw!


8. Molly Ringwald will probably not play the Trashcan Man, either, but Billy Bob Thornton would be cool. Billy Bob's always cool.


9. They need to write in a lot of heavy metal for the soundtrack.


10. M-O-O-N, that spells "you probably won't see this anytime soon." And when you do, Woody Allen won't be directing it. Or Molly Ringwald."

Just because King uses religious ideas as a basis for his story doesn't mean that he can also be lazy in using them. Why not have it where Trash Can Man actually armed the damn thing?

So update this for the modern world? Or make it a 70s period piece? Yes I know the Unexpurgated version was set in 1990 (hardly the modern world now) but it still read like the 70s with a smattering of new pop culture references. It was inconsistent there.

This has been my major beef with the Marvel comic series. Nothing new or fresh was brought to the story.

Billy Bob would be good as Trashcan Man. Maybe Tim McGraw as Larry, and they could change his song to being a country hit.

I agree that Sinise will always be Redman.
