I think people who criticize FOX now and cite their treatment of past shows do so unfairly. Yes, in the past FOX mismanaged a ton of shows and aired things out of order; Futurama is one example, but Firefly is a much better illustration of out-of-order airings.

However, people need to recognize that FOX from 2007 until the present is much different from the FOX of the late 90s and early-to-mid 2000s, mostly due to Kevin Reilly becoming President.

Which is why I wonder the reasoning behind airing the episodes out of production order; was it executive input or did the show's producers/writers make the decision?

Just got around to watching this and thought it was a great episode. I really hope it gets renewed for a second season. Louise is seriously one of the funniest characters on TV now, everything she says or does is hysterical.

My God, I love this show. I can't believe they made a plot involving "animal anus paintings" actually work. I love that the only reason Bob embraced the art was to spite Edith.

Louise is still my favorite character, but Bob and Gene are great too. Even Tina has grown on me and provides consistent laughs. The only one that sort of gets on my nerves now and then is Linda, but she's usually alright. This show is definitely an example of starting off rough and improving immensely with each episode. Louise treating those neighborhood kids like hookers was great.

This episode made me laugh out loud more than anything in recent memory. This show is an absolute winner if you ask me. If you aren't a believer, then at least check out this one episode on Hulu...

Is it just me or does it seem like a lot of the dialog is ad-libbed in this? Some little interactions feel very fluid and funny to the actors.

The show was somewhat slow to grab me, but the last couple especially have been awesome.

Some of it probably is. Creator Loren Bouchard and H. Jon Benjamin both worked on Home Movies and Dr. Katz prior to this and those were heavily improvised. This seems more scripted with a few improve moments.

The first season of Home Movies was mostly improvised, but I think after that, and with the move away from Squigglevision, it became more script-oriented.

Based on the way Bob's Burgers is animated, I'm pretty sure it's scripted. But given some of those involved, I'm sure they play a part in the writing process or do a little improv here and there, but I imagine it's minimal. That's just the nature of the animated medium though; it's harder to improv because you have to have the animated character and the voice actor sync up.

I can't begin to speak towards the animation tools used, but South Park has no issues using their computers to create a show week after week with very little lead times.

Same here. It's become an unexpected highlight of FOX' Sunday night for me. Last night's episode was hilarious.

True, Home Movies became more scripted, but I don't think it had to do with the animation method. They moved to Flash, the same thing Bob's and South Park use, because it was cheaper, faster, and some potential viewers just didn't like squigglevision. They still did a lot of improv, but had a script to fall back on instead of just an outline. I think the changes were mostly just due to learning what worked best for production. Losing Paula Poundstone was probably a factor too.

I noticed Bouchard was a consultant on the The Ricky Gervais Show, which (probably Flash) animated the existing podcast audio.

I stand corrected. It definitely didn't strike me as a show that lent itself to improv, but it's cool that they use it.

On another note, while I really like H. Jon Benjamin and think he's a hilarious guy, he isn't exactly the best voice actor around (not like a Mel Blanc, Billy West, Hank Azaria, or Frank Oz, for example). Most of the characters I've heard him voice (Ben on Dr. Katz, Coach McGuirk on Home Movies, Archer on Archer, and Bob on Bob's Burgers) all sound basically like his speaking voice with only slight variations. That's not to say he isn't great at voicing those characters; in fact, he's perfect and I can't imagine anyone else voicing those characters. But it's just one of those things that annoys me sometimes, when voice actors use their speaking voice to voice multiple characters.
