I thought it was ok. Some of the cheese is just part of the comic book world, despite attempts to be realistic like the recent Batman movies, and i'm ok with that.
Unfortunately I think the show ends up landing awkwardly somewhere in between the fanciful stuff of comics and the real world, and stumbles. I think they did a poor job with pacing too, and seemed to rush to all the big reveals right from the get go, whereas taking it's time to reveal Chess, Orwell, etc might have been better.

I was fine with how fast they brought Orwell into the picture. However, I think it was a little too obvious right away that Fleming was Chess. I think they could have revealed that more slowly.

Fleming needed to be set up as the big bad for the rest of the season, so I can understand why they did it. I would have liked to see Orwell dragged out for a while, but I can also understand why they wanted to get a hot girl in the cast ASAP. Tough call.

I just caught the 1st hour of this, and thought it was pretty mediocre at best. This show needs a bit more humor in it if its going to survive. I did LOL at Keith David's "death" scene however. The CGI cape is so obviously awful, I wish they'd work on that a little bit more, oh, and Orwell should be in her panties... always.

I enjoyed it, solid, not great, but very watchable.
I though it had a similar tone to Season 1 of Human Target, which veered towards comic book territory until this seasons re-imaging.
Pretty decent cast, some decent dark edges, some dashes of humor, a decent lead, Summer Glau is a nice addition, and Keith David was very good. I liked how they introduced some of the villians, very plausible modern day comic book fun.
I have decent hopes and will be tuning in for forseeable near future....

Same here. Wasn't very impressed and likely won't be tuning in again.

I liked it.
Looks like they are setting it up so that he has a deep pool of villains to battle, so hopefully he will be able to kick ass each week.

Just watching this now - barely. Ugh. I hate dumbed-down shows. First it was the flashback to remind us who Chess is a mere 10 minutes later, and now when Glau holds up the Tower card, of course it's not enough for her to verbally remind us the guy had it on his arm. No we have to be shown again, lest we forget what we just saw two segments ago.
Deleted.

Honestly I am surprised at all of the positive reaction garnered so far for a pretty mediocre show. Is the real superpower on the show Summer Glau's ability to cloud men's minds into watching paint-by-numbers television? As a superhero fan, the show would have been more tolerable if it had been a real, established comic book hero. How much extra would it have cost to license a third-stringer from Marvel or DC if you are going all out like this show into superheroes?
I am not sure how the show's structure would really operate in the long-term past this shortened run. The natural inclination would be to romantically pair up Orwell and the Cape, but there is the pesky problem of his wife.

It's a fun super hero series that has no fear being simply fun. That's why it works. It isn't striving to make these characters plausible, or make some hamfisted allegory for modern day society. It's just good old fashioned comic book cheese.
ANd not using an established character helps avoid the rabbid fanboys bitching about how "scene 6 in episode 13 shows [insert superhero name here] doing a [insert heroic action here] when in issue 275 of the comics he clearly does not posses such an ability because [insert fanboyish nitpick here]".
I for one am glad for said "pesky problem". He's becoming a super hero and driven to avenge what was done to him. No need for a love interest to cloud any of that.

Let's hope the network "suits" agree with you and didn't try to fine tune the series after the pilot was shot.

From the ads, I was certain it would suck. But I liked it a lot. The writers know exactly when to lighten up and the carny atmosphere was much better than Heroes. Great pulp writing.

It was ok. Keith's a little too over the top for me. Sure he's using his showman voice for Vince, but the whole having to explain shit to the carnies is a bit much and unnecessary.

^^ Apparently it's some British comedy series with a super hero theme.

I liked it and I hope it does not get canceled. Finally a show I might watch after Heroes got canceled.
Would like to see more of the Capes wife
