Doctor Who Christmas Special "A Christmas Carol" 12/25/10

Re: Doctor Who Christmas Special "A Christmas Carol" 12/25/10
Back when the show was off the air and the books were all we were getting, some of the writers of the Missing Adventures line would sometimes have the Doctor leave his companions for what was, for them, a very brief time, but for him wound up being months or years. A sneaky way to work in extra time for any given Doctor sans TV companions without breaking the continuity of the show.

To me this is just chock full of win.

As to the subject as hand, the shows proven before that the Doctor can drop off his companions, go off adventuring as much as he likes, then swing back to pick them up whenever he likes.
The Second Doctor did it as least once in The Two Doctors when he dropped off one of his companions to "Learn Graphology" while he was running an errand for the Time Lords.

Re: Doctor Who Christmas Special "A Christmas Carol" 12/25/10
I see that this is already up for preorder for release in Feb on Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Chr...3710948&sr=8-4
Has anyone heard if this will not be included in the season set, as the Christmas specials always have, or is this just an attempt to double dip?

Rumors around the Gallifrey Base Forum is the Christmas Special won't be part of a box set. Series 6 is being released in 2 separate releases (6.0 & 6.5) with the Christmas Special considered an offshoot of Series 5.
Personally I'm betting that when Series 6.5 is release in late 2011 or early 2012, we'll see a complete set with the Christmas Special, 6.0 & 6.5.

Just watched it and loved it! I really dig Matt Smith as the Doctor. His delivery of the "throwaway" lines is great. I particularly liked the bit where the younger version of Gambon's character asks the Doctor for advice about kissing the girl. "Act all nervous and rubbish and shakey, because you're going to be that way anyhow so might as well make it feel like it's on purpose."

I'm starting to really dig Matt Smith as well. I've enjoyed all the seasons of new Who, but in hindsight I'm starting to think of the first two incarnations as over the top emo and glad to see more of a classic approach with this version.

I think I need to sit down and rewatch this. I liked this least of all the Christmas specials. Maybe it's because it was on an alien world, but something was very off for me. It didn't strike that Christmas chord despite the clear undertones.
I think the Doctor not picking up on her illness as well as not taking steps to cure her seemed very out of character to me. Hardly ever does he miss something and there was no reason for her to not try and find a cure for her. He was all too keen to rewrite Scroge's past only to throw him under the bus later just to save Rory and Amy (and the other passengers).

I very much enjoyed this episode. I bemoaned the end of David Tennant's tenure as the Doctor but I feel that Matt Smith is really coming into his own in the role.
Oh and Michael Gambon stole the show.

This is the same as the premiere date in the UK, so it looks like the UK/US airings are going to be (near) simultaneous from this point on:

The Christmas episode aired on 12/25 on BBCA.
Has anybody heard if/when BBCA will be in HD on DirecTV?

It's out on DVD/Blu-ray as a standalone release:

Amazon also has it for VOD. Maybe iTunes as well.

This is what I've heard too from BBC WA. They intend to mirror this exactly in North America as quickly as their manufacturing stream will allow.
I've been told these two smaller volumes will contain no extra features, but will also be priced accordingly (i.e. they'll be cheaper). "A Christmas Carol" will also not appear on either of these. But then at the end of the year, just in time for Christmas, we'll get our usual full season box set with all the extras (or at least as many as we got last year, which was down off years' past) and that will include "A Christmas Carol." (but not all of the extras that are coming on "A Christmas Carol"'s solo release next week will make it onto the end-of-year box set, because of space issues with the s6 extras being planned - I'd guess that first to go would be the full-length Confidential (probably to be replaced by a Cut-Down version)... not sure about the Proms concert... suppose that might depend on if they do another one this coming summer)

I am so excited for this new season. Really surprised there's no delay between the UK and US airings except for the time difference.
