Doctor Who Christmas Special "A Christmas Carol" 12/25/10

Airing Christmas Day on BBC and BBC America, hopefully on iTunes and Amazon VOD the next day. Really looking forward to this. Can never have enough Doctor Who...

The word on this is that Gambon is excellent, although I don't know why that would surprise anyone.

For those in the US, BBCA is also airing Doctor Who at the Proms 2010 at 1PM EST, in between reruns:

I saw DW at the Proms earlier this year. What a terrific program! All of the season 5 music themes with appearances by a lot of the more recent villains, Matt Smith in chatacter interacting with a kid and an invisible bomb, and Karen Gillian as the emcee. I would love to watch it again.

Definately an improvement over past Christmas Specials. I enjoyed that lots.

Have to say that this could be my favorite Christmas special.

I thought that was absolutely tremendous. I would have like a little more Amy and Rory, as their interplay was a lot of fun. But Gambon knocked it out of the park, and Smith has got his Doctor down. Really touching and it made me quite excited for season six.

Really liked the Doctor Who take on A Christmas Carol - was afraid it might be the "same old, same old" retread of the Christmas Carol tale, but was engrossed by it through the whole thing.

Sneak peak of season 6 was awesome too - can't wait!

I tend to hate all things Scrooge and found myself bored by this ep. I just can't warm up to Smith's Doctor. Great to see Katherine Jenkins though. Nice that they worked her singing into the role.

This is more like it! Very good Christmas (and regular) episode of the show. Gambon was brilliant, Smith was great and Moffat's writing was on fire. Very excited about Series 6 now.

I believe that was only the sneak for the season opener (which, IIRC, is slated to be a two-parter). Which makes me all the more excited to see what else they have in store!

Did Dr. Who really film an episode in the US?

Good lord, if a movie or tv show ever needs to cast an angel, I nominate Katherine Jenkins. That is one handsome woman. Sings nice too.

Yes. They usually do one big location shoot per season. Last year it was for Vampires In Venice, and they went somewhere in Eastern Europe.

Re: Doctor Who Christmas Special "A Christmas Carol" 12/25/10

Absolutely loved it.

I actually thought this was the episode to watch for anyone that had not warmed up to Smith yet. The whole cast was just on fire. Gambon had some great stuff to work with, and they actually had a good child actor.

I am amazed that they took something that I'm pretty sure looked absolutely ridiculous on paper and made it so enjoyable.

Bring on the new season!

If all of that is just going to be in the season opener...holy crap!

For the BBC-A people, Matt Smith was on the Graham Norton episode right after the special. They mentioned Karen Gillan was on a previous ep...now I gotta see if they'll ever replay that one...

It's a preview for the first part of series 6 (the first 7 episodes; they're splitting the series), not just the season opener. The Utah shots are from the first episode, I believe.

Re: Doctor Who Christmas Special "A Christmas Carol" 12/25/10

One thing I wasn't clear on. The cloud machine was tuned to his brainwaves and when that changed, he could no longer control the device.

Considering they didn't just "change overnight", but rather slowly through the years (with a push on the final day), shouldn't the machine reflect that?

I must of missed something.....

Minor nitpick/question aside, I really enjoyed it.

Re: Doctor Who Christmas Special "A Christmas Carol" 12/25/10

This was pretty good, but not perfect. For a spin on A Christmas Carol it was pretty good. I especially like the bit with the projector on the wall and then the doctor appearing in the video. The production was top notch too. Ok, maybe the flying carriage was a little dodgy but the cgi fish were the best cgi fx the show has ever had and the physical fx and sets were great. Although the main room was a little too sound-stagy.

However, I found myself getting very bored about 2/3 of the way through. It kind of finished itself by the numbers. Also could have used more Pond, especially in her stripper cop outfit.

That must have been a heck of a long honeymoon, because it encompassed two Sarah Jane Smith episodes and a holiday special!

The Doctor does more on one weekend than most people do in a year.
